So many music memories!  I guess these are more "phases" than memories, but...
1)  Country phase - reminds me of elementary school.  I thought country music was all there was.  Garth Brooks, Brooks 'n Dunn, Alan Jackson, Randy Travis, and (eek) Billy Ray Cyrus.  Line dancing and mullets at the local bar.
2)  Everything changed in fifth grade.  Bought my first "non-country" cassettes, Boyz II Men and Kris Kross.  Quickly moved on to Green Day's Dookie and Presidents of the USA.  I sure thought I was cool for not listening to country anymore.
3)  High school grunge and classic rock phase.  Pearl Jam, Nirvana, AIC, STP, Soundgarden, Zeppelin, Floyd.  Still love this stuff.
4)  College led to discovering the Jacket, which made me realize that there were really good bands out there that most people had never heard of and to not just accept whatever bands were shoved down our throats on the radio.  Thank God for the MMJ!
We could.

First tape bought: Something from the brilliant Weird Al collection...not sure which one, though I do remember a Polka Medley that included "Papa Don't Preach"...

First CD bought: That'd be Cypress Hill, Black Sunday (YEEEEEAAAHHH!!). At the time, I had no idea what a bong was, or how you'd make hits from it (didn't know you actually took hits from it), but the music felt a little dangerous, so that was cool...

First concert (on my own): Face to Face, Tilt, probably about 3 or 4 other punk bands at the Guild Theatre in Sacramento. That show still ranks up there as one of the best times I've had with live music.

The albums that I associate with the few years of college where I was most loaded: Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers, Beta Band - Hot Shots Part II, Old 97s - Too Far to Care, and of course, Primal Scream - Screamadelica. I'd come home from school, maybe a class or two early because it was just too nice of a Spring day to spend inside a classroom, pick up some beer on the way. Pitch some horseshoes, bbq, foosball, always have music playing, herb blazing. AAAAHHH...

The MMJ albums that I associate with particular times:

It Still Moves - A camping trip to Shasta County with my future wife, then girlfriend. We fished together, climbed Castle Craggs, made a slow drive up on the north side of Mt. Shasta. There were other albums that were played, but this one defined the trip. We went to one of the Okonokos shows about a month later, and I proposed a few weeks after that.

The Tennessee Fire - My wife and I went to the Fillmore show on Dec. 30th this last year (I know, a day too soon), and escaped the Bay Area on NYE for the coast, and a  little quiet. I had actually lost this disc for a couple years and found it the morning of the 31st. I'll always associate this one with HWY 1, fog, and Butano redwoods. It's now my favorite of theirs.

Oh, I love memory lane!
The first album I ever bought was "Chicago X" for my brother's birthday in 1976.
I was only 8 years old or so, and after I gave it to him I asked him each and every day, for months, whether or not he was tired of it and could I have it back.  I loved the song "If You Leave Me Now"; plus I like chocolate.  Never did get it from him.

The next album I bought was also a gift for a friend's birthday (her name is Mia).  I wanted this one back as well but kept quiet about it:

The first album I bought for myself that truly changed my musical interests was The Jam's All Mod Con's.  I'll never forget the day I moved in to my apartment in Santa Monica and I was BLASTING the thing and we were drinking dirty vodka martini's with tons of olives stuffed with garlic and celebrating our cool spot on the planet.  My new neighbor walked by, heard the tunes, saw the martini's flowing and said to himself (I learned later) that he new we'd be fast friends.  Still are.  He's a cool dude who still throws fantastic Halloween party's up the Hollywood Hills.

I also vividly recall the first CD I ever bought, The English Beat's "Special Beat Service".  I can remember distinctly how I would put both the tape and the cd on listen to the difference in the sound quality between the two.  The opening piano of "I Confess" rang so loud and clear, it was remarkable to me... ahh, I'd like a martini.
My jacket's gonna be cut slim and checked

Bands that evoke memories of my teenage years include Silverchair, No Doubt, Rancid, NOFX, A Tribe Called Quest....Oh Tribe, still a favorite of mine.  We used to blast their CDs all of the time, especially while I used to go on "cruises" with two of my best friends during my sophmore and junior year.  We usually ended up causing a ruckus somewhere or hitting up a skating spot.  i never skated so i was just the "skate ho" i guess.

Young adult years up until now (i would say 18-23) were filled with 311, Jurassic 5, RX Bandits, Zebrahead...A lot of crazier, up beat bands...Pretty much a lot of the more popular stuff.  i really didn't start digging into some of the more underground or even just less popular stuff until this year.  i've always been one to love any and every type of music...i mean, i've loved bands like pulp, the chainsaw kittens, belle and sebastian, jon spencer blues explosion since i was in high school.  i just never really dug myself, it was always someone else showing me a band.  i've finally learned that i am going to be the greatest finder of bands that i like....sounds stupid, like i should have learned it earlier, but i'm just stubborn i guess.

current favs:  mmj, the new pornographers, the radio dept., beulah, the sea and cake, wilco, etc etc

i'm excited to see where my musical life will be heading.  i hope to fall even more in love with music with each coming year.  that's how it's been going so far!

A couple of days ago I found a brilliant, brilliant cover of Don't Stop Till You Get Enough sung in Indian (Punjabi?)  :D

God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Such a great topic...

don't know how I missed this on the first go 'round. I got plenty, here's one:

Anything from The Doors reminds me of my last 2 years of high school. Here's a few of many

Riders on the Storm reminds me of riding around in the country (skipping school) and getting high. We realized that Jim Morrison had a "whispering track" behind all the lyrics he was singning and we had to pull over to the side of the road b/c we were so blown away.

Anything off Soft Parade reminds me of my summer before Sr. year when I spent just about every day at the river at the sandbar and rope swing.

When the Music's Over reminds me of being on the beach in Florida with my best friend K-Bob (when we painted The Doors on the back door of his 1969 Kingswood Estate station wagon with a stick, a pair of my tighty whiteys and some paint stolen from a construction site) and we found this guy frm California who had medical marijuana (pre-rolled joints, like 40 of them) for cancer and we went back to the house and my brother in law the jazz pianist was tooling around on the piano and we got him to listen to (and play) When the Music's Over and in the middle of it he looks at us and says, "Butterflies scream?" and we laughed so hard we had to run out of the house.

Spanish Caravan reminds me of driving in the snow my sr year, pulling someone behind my car on a rope, sitting on a waiter tray, and when the "blowing wind" effect came up on the
song I kept thinking that my tires were spinning.

I got more...

Not sure how I ever missed this one.

As much as I love music, and as emotional it can make me, I really only have 1 "memory" to tell.

uhhhh, there was a time in the 90's (ok, since 1994 on really) where if this is playing, something is gonna get dry humped. My son was conceived to this album hence his first name. It's a name that in Celtic possibly meaning "strongly flooding" which is appropriate for the boy. So this album holds several special places in my heart.

I kind of wish I could post on here and let everyone know that I lost my virginity to W.A.S.P.'s "Fuck Like A Beast" but I don't believe I am quite that badass...

:-/
The river is moving. The blackbird must be flying.

weeniebeenie

Foo Fighters The Colour and the Shape- Reminds me of high school. My sister would play it every morning to wake me up.

Fleetwood Mac/The Eagles Greatest Hits- Makes me think of my Dad and how he plays these two albums every summer or whenever we have a bbq.

I don't think I've lived long enough to have that many song/album memories.
How loud can silence get?

Stevie Ray Vaughan- Wall of Denial
Neil Young- No More

Both songs about getting clean and sober, both came out in 1989 when I went to rehab and got clean and sober. Heavy hitters there.

Downward Spiral- I had never heard of NIN until 8th grade.  I had been going to this little country school out in the middle of no where. When a guy from the big city moved there. We became friends and he introduced me to NIN. Totally opened my mind to a different style of music.

Smashing Pumpkins MCIS Tour Prob my fav all time concert. I think a lost some of my hearing at this show. I remember standing outside the arena before show while they were performing the sound check.

Radiohead in Atlanta 2003. Amazing set in mid October. Not quite raining outside but rather cool mist. This is last road trip we all took before my best friend was killed in a car accident.
