Carl!  :cheesy:

Carl's set opening for Trampled by Turtles was fantastic! It sounded like he might have been doing some different intros, and Questions went deep into some heaviness at the end, and there was a new tune, Sleepy Lagoon! Which was AWESOME, he sequenced some great aaaaaahhh vocal harmonies with some Doozie guitar and layered on some Gilmour-style pedal steel that blew my mind (he's "still working on the ending"). TbT joined him for a beautiful Carried Away, and then Carl joined them for two of their tunes which I cannot name. Great show! But gee whiz, I can't believe they didn't play Happy Together...

NEED to hear Sleepy Lagoon, sounds AWESOME! Did he do Questions by himself w/loops? I freaking love that.
I NEEDED IT MOST WHENEVER tbh

Yeah, he looped beats, guitar, and vocals on nearly every tune, except Retired (I think) and Carried Away. Wonderful stuff.

The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

Heartless Bastards and Dead Confederate! Show kicked serious ass, glad I decided to go but it's not quite as fun on the rare occasion I don't find anyone to go with. Totally worth it still though. HB live sound a lot like they do on Arrow, in a good way. I think they played most of Arrow except Marathon, don't know what the setlist was. DC were very solid as the opener, wanted to grab an LP but just went with The Mountain and Arrow instead. They were very friendly and signed my Arrow LP, only took an additional half hour wait. Bullshitted with a dude from Denver who's seen them 46 times. Erika looks great in jeans.

That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

I dunno why they don't play marathon.   The only disappointment when I saw them of an otherwise enjoyable show.

Stumbled upon this video from their last show in Pittsburgh, I must've started listening to them shortly after this show took place because it went under my radar. The venue they played at last year was very small, hence the band being in together so tightly. Not sure who that is on stage with them.
Forgot to mention they had Pixies Doolittle on repeat before the show and in between sets, so heard it 3 times in a row.  :cheesy:

Drive-by-motherfucking-Truckers, with Tired Eyes by my side. Favorite moment: when Patterson bent down to give Bill a fist bump, and I had to nudge him and say, "Hey, I think Hood wants to give you a pound."

Riding that post-show wave, I was rocking hard to RUSH (Hemispheres) all the way home from Tulsa tonight, I hit a good number on the speedo, then got all green lights all the way to the house. Would that have happened if I had some shit like Pavement or Guided By Voices on the stereo?  I don't think so. That said, if I had to choose between seeing Rush or Malkmus live, I'm not sure which way I'd go. Discuss.

I like this version of Crispy! Pumped up and prodding Bill to fist bump!

Conor Oberst with First Aid Kit guesting on a few songs, it was unreal how beautiful it was, unreal! He played several of my very favorites and brought out FAK for some of them, Cape Canaveral, Ladder Song, Southern State (FAK), Breezy, Map of the World (FAK doing the JJ and M. Ward bits, unreal) Laura Laurent and Lua!

Conor also explained how he quit MoF because there were too many egos flying around, though they might reunite if they bring the bread...

Idiot Wind opened and was lovely as ever. TTMOE helped clear the stage after her, which for a few seconds had me hoping for some kind of crazy Idiot Wind, TTMOE, Conor and FAK combo, (didn't happen) but that might have been too good for me to handle.

If you have the chance, go see him, these intimate solo shows are just amazing.

I went on Saturday night to see the one night only reunion by Toronto thrash/punk band EPILEPTIC BRAIN SURGEONS at the Hard Luck Bar. Another recently reunited Toronto 80s metal band SOULSTORM (Canada's answer to GODFLESH) opened.

SOULSTORM was excellent, but EBS were disappointing. We left after 5 songs, in search of shelter

LBSUNFLWR

Calexico and Yo La Tengo last night at The Brown in Louisville.
weird and wonderful!!

Well, it hasn't transpired, but I am excited and anxiously awaiting February 6th to see the beautiful Tift Merritt!!!!  I saw her with JTE recently, but now I'll get to see her on her tour in the quaint atmosphere of the The Ark in Ann Arbor Michigan!!!  Ready to explode with anticipation!!!!!!  Wooooo hooooo!  she's like my modern day Emmy Lou..... :cheesy:http://youtu.be/i8TdDJe6-xY?t=6s

The Vaccines/San Cisco last night at The Union Transfer in philly. Very energetic fun live band. Kinda reminded me of the Hives. Short songs, energetic. Not really a problem but they played the same set list as the nights before so I knew what songs were coming up. Also they only played for an hour

No Hope
Wreckin' Bar (Ra Ra Ra)
Tiger Blood
A Lack of Understanding
Wetsuit
Change of Heart, Pt. 2
Teenage Icon
Under Your Thumb
Ghost Town
Post Break-Up Sex
All in White
Aftershave Ocean
Blow It Up
I Always Knew
If You Wanna

Encore:
Bad Mood
Wolf Pack
Nørgaard

Also caught Palma Violets a few nights ago at Kung Fu Necktie (which I had never been too  ).  Tiny bar (right near Johnny Brenda's in philly).   They were real good as well.  I only knew one song though, Best Of Friends.  Their other songs sounded decent.  Would have bought their album but it's not out yet and they were only selling t-shirts.

Went and saw Grace Potter and the Nocturnals Saturday night at Rams Head Live in Bmore.  I am glad we got in at doors as the show was sold out and the chances for getting a good spot were getting slim.  Felt bad as we were waiting in line to enter as a couple found out they bought tickets for the wrong night, they also had a second night on Monday, I hope the husband didn't get too much of brow beating as the wife was dressed to the nines and ready for a night out.  I also had to chuckle as security asked how to handle crowd surfers, not really that kind of crowd!

Well the opener Houndmouth was excellent, always great to be pleasantly surprised by a good opener.  You could see they enjoyed playing and had fun with each other, and the music was fun too.  Would really like to see them play a small venue in the future.

When Grace Potter and the Nocturnals hit the stage it was go time.  Grace Potter really gets a heck of a workout during her shows dancing around having a blast.  She really seems like the little girl living out her rock n roll dream.  I didn't really know what to expect prior to the show, I knew of her pop songs and I also knew she could dig deep into the blues and rock.  The Nocturnals were really good, they floored me on the 3rd song, not sure of the name, but they guitarist just went back and forth with some dirty blues riffs mixed with some pedal effects and Grace singing over them or playing the keys.  I truly believe she could be just as popular without the pop songs, not sure if they are her ideas or the record label's.  Grace also kept the crowd involved, especially with the Ravens in the Super Bowl the next night, she really played that up.  I also didn't realize prior to the show that it was a total request show, which I thought was a nice gift to the fans, especially the guy next to me that kept updated his notepad in his phone with the setlist.

Our only downfall for this show was that we chose the wrong side of the venue to stand, had a blocked view of Grace when she was on the keyboards, not a big deal, but she is the eye candy.  Also had to chuckle at an older gentleman (loosely used term here) as he basically dirty danced with, I'm hoping, his wife.  He pinned her with the railings and she didn't seem too happy as he was with his moves.

Anyway, great show with high energy.  I would recommend her show to anyone that likes a good rock and roll show.
Pretty please with peanut butter pudding surprise on top??

man, tift is great. when is that Ann Arbor show? I was able to talk with her for a little bit when she opened for JTE and she's super down to earth.
some get stoned, some get strange, sooner or later it all gets real.

Recently saw Polica and Purity Ring.  Purity Ring's show is fantastic in it's simplicity, just a few tasteful lights and great sound, loved it.

Seeing Assembly of Dust (pumped for new album) soon.  And Gold Fields!

I went to see D.R.I. last night at Club Infinity on the outskirts of Buffalo, NY.

I saw They Might Be Giants in Tulsa last night. The band was great, the boys were funny and having a good time, noting a couple times how much they liked playing at the Cain's, they did a nutty sock puppet show and a few Bob Wills-style calls, and rocked out.

The crowd, however, was one of the strangest I'd ever seen, and I don't mean strange people. There was a line of about 50 people to get in an hour before doors, which I thought seemed pretty normal, even though there had not been significant lines for other recent shows, like Tame Impala or Drive-by Truckers. And the room was only half full by the time everybody got in! So I didn't get up front, but still had a good spot in the middle about 5 people back. I figured I'd be behind the bunch of hardcore TMBG crazies and would have a great time. But when the show got going, it was like the crowd was reversed! EVERYBODY up front was suffering from what I am now calling Hipster Statue Syndrome, which causes the afflicted to lose the ability to display any sort of amusement or indication that they are having fun. Meanwhile, the entire crowd surrounding us was dancing and jumping and having a ball. I DO NOT GET IT. It's TMBG, not the fucking Antlers or Low or something!

Especially infuriating were the extremely cool hipster teenagers directly in front of me who were dressed to the nines in their old-fashioned finery, the boy with fancy white shirt and suspenders, the girl in a lovely dress and hat with pearls, their friend also in a funky getup with an old fuzzy hat. They were obviously fans, both girls noting the setlist in their teeny noteboooks. Fun kids, right? NO. No dancing, no jumping, no waving, clapping, or smiling. When the crowd got amped up with Birdhouse, of course a large jumpy man had to barrel his way up right next to fancy hipster boy and bumped him pretty good and yelled stupid things. Yeah, I know that sucks, but get over it, which is what the rest of us around him did, and stayed out of jumpy's way as much as we could, or jumped around with him and enjoyed the show. These kids not only scowled at (and elbowed) him, but heaped their disdain upon the rest of the crowd too, and I had to move back, as they and the rest of the statuary up front were wrecking the show for me. Bizarro Rock Show Crowd. I got a record and the awesomest deck of cards ever seen.
