Saw Brown Bird the other night at the Federal Taphouse in Harrisburg.  Had a great time, they really put on a great show.  They played a good mix of new songs and older ones.  I like the fact that they were hanging out watching the opener, ended up going up to them between songs to thank them for playing our town.  The crowd was unfortunately thin, but those that were there had a good time dancing around.  (March Fourth Marching Band was playing a few blocks away, and they are always a big draw)  The venue is nice, good sound once they get it set.  I like the fact that you can go to the main level and grab a good beer of your choice, they have a 100 on tap, or just take whatever they have in the cooler upstairs.
I'm bummed I'm missing my first listen to Brown Bird a week from today.  I have ticket to their album release in Boston, with Joe Fletcher and the WR, and haven't listened to them at all yet.  Can't go, so if anyone in the Boston wants a ticket, no charge, give a shout.  Glad you had a good time, JM!
The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

Last night I was going to go see LIVING COLOUR with the same bunch of high school friends I went with in Oct 1990 to see them with, but throughout the last week everyone cancelled, one by one. So, since I didn't feel like going if no one else did, I went to see KEN mode, KEELHAUL and TODAY IS THE DAY in Toronto instead.

KEN mode have become Pitchfork darlings in the past year and a lot of people think they are a new band, although they have been at it for 13+ years. I have seen them numerous times over the past dozen years. They are a mixture of Amphetamine Reptile-style noise rock and hardcore like Converge (their guitarist Kurt Ballou recorded their past two albums) and they are always excellent live.

KEELHAUL are from Cleveland and never became as popular as they should be. Really well played math rock/metal, mostly instrumental, from a band that really know their instruments inside and out. They might be too weird for some people, but I think they are just excellent.

Watched 2 TODAY IS THE DAY songs and then my ride wanted to leave. They were good, but I've seen them many times before and knew the score.

The crowd wasn't great, but the band was on! If a recording pops up, it'll probably have "Whirring (Feat. FiddleCastro)"

Suhhhweeet! I wanna hear that FiddleCastro contribution! I will be seeing them in Tulsa next week—I was shocked to find out that they had expanded their touring dates by seeing a poster for the show at some new little music hall I haven't been to yet. Should be interesting.

Spent the last 2 nights at the incredibly beautiful Palace Theater in Louisville seeing 2 very long, very exciting Widespread Panic shows.

First night I was in the front row of the pit!! I have no idea how we got so lucky to get those tickets! I was directly in front of Jimmy Herring and watched him tear it up all night. he is one bad ass MF on the guitar!! Only issue was we heard him so loud I missed out on a lot of the piano and vocals. But so cool to be front row and stand up against the stage all night! Good setlist, excellent performance. Came on at 8 exactly and left the stage at 11:30, 20 minute set break...what more could you ask for for $50??

Then last night we were Row Q on the right downstairs. Way better sound from that space. Great first set! It was about 90 degrees and jam packed where we were though so we went up to the balcony for 2nd set and everything changed.  It was cooler, we had space to dance, people were going nuts, and they played 3 of my favorite songs of theirs! Never seen them before, had them on my little "wish list" along with some great covers as expected. They were on fire, just amazing! Definitely the better of the 2 nights and probably the best show of their tour so far!

Happy to have the night off tonight before I start up with 3 more shows Friday, Saturday and Sunday! What a week! :)

Too bad I missed the JJ show down the street last night.

Glad to hear the band was on in the Big Apple.

Can't wait to see them at the 9:30 Club tomorrow for the first time.

Anyone else going to that show?

I went and saw Clutch at Rams Head Live in Baltimore on Saturday.  First off, I'd much rather drive to Baltimore for a show than Philly any day.  Even with O's in town I didn't hit traffic getting into town, there was a big plus right there.

We were able to get into the venue at doors so we got a great spot in the 2nd level, the floor is a game for the young, and I'm not into getting pushed around anymore.  The openers were very interesting to say the least.  Scorpion Child reminded me of a 80's metal band and the lead singer needed a bigger stage.  He was trying to pull off his choreographed jumps and mic tosses, but was just tight on space.  They were okay, the most entertaining part was the cheesy moves by the lead singer, music was okay.  The best opener was Lionize, these guys were tight.  We even got Tim Sult to come out and play on a bunch of songs with the band.  The most interesting part of this band was the bassist and drummer, the drummer laid the rhythm of the songs while the bassist essentially played like he was on lead guitar.  Really set up some interesting arrangements.  I would probably check these guys out if they tour on their own.  The 3rd opener was Orange Goblin, these guys were fun, and you could tell they were having fun on stage too.  The lead singer reminded me of WWE wrestler, the guy had to be close to 7' tall.  The best was watching him getting the crowd riled up and playing air guitar when there was a solo, cracked me up.  They played a good set, even got the rest of the openers out for a song.  Not sure if I would see them if they headlined a show but they were great opening for Clutch.

Once Clutch hit the stage the crowd was ready.  The pits had already started during Orange Goblin so they were riled up and ready to go.  They started us off with 3 songs off the new album, and for me that was a good thing as I really dig the new album Earth Rocker.  After that they really got the crowd rolling with The Mob Goes Wild.   A few songs later some idiot thought it would be fun to toss a cup of ice on the stage from the balcony, needless to say Neil did not take kindly to this gesture.  The idiot then throws another cup of ice to the stage before security escorted him out.  The timing couldn't have been better as the band broke into The Wolfman Kindly Requests... Neil directed some of the lyrics to the area of the tosser...

There´s a buzzkiller in the room
In the room - can you dig it?

Party´s over you all gotta go
The wolfman is coming out
Party´s over you all gotta go
The sooner the better
The wolfman is coming out

The set list was killer, there were some new songs I was hoping to hear, but hopefully I will get them at the Philly show.  I was suprised that the pits didn't get too rowdy, only one time did security need to jump in the middle and escort someone out.  I thought it was cool that the group next to me brought their kids, Father said his kids really dig the band and wanted to see them, they were in an age range of 12-15 I would say.  You could see the Dad was really proud that his kids enjoyed some of the music he did, and yes they did have earplugs in.  Overall great show, left wanting more, and couldn't ask for a better group of people in our area, all were cool and respectful of each other.  After the show I was able to get a New Belgium Clutch Sour Ale at the Leinenkugels Bar in the Power Plant... great way to end the night.

3.Cyborg Bette

Kaki King 10th Anniversary of "Everybody Loves You" show. I've seen Kaki perform many times in the last 5 years, but last night was really special.  She was having as much fun as we were, and we actually got a real, genuine encore.

I saw The Joy Formidable last Friday night, and I want to thank FiddleCastro again for not spoiling it by telling me how awesome they are live—because they are OUTSTANDING live. It was in a little place in Tulsa (not the Cain's), and even with the prospect of playing the next night at a music festival in Norman, the band seemed genuinely excited to be there playing for us. I imagine that's what they do most everywhere they play, because it's fairly obvious when a group is phoning it in, and these guys were seriously enjoying themselves. I think they just love playing their music for people, and seeing those people enjoy it, which I sure as hell did. Great show.

Crispy, you just gave me a reason to not bail on Shaky Knees Fest. I need to go.

They're one of my top 5 current touring bands. Their energy and stage presence is just incredible. Totally infectious (except in Brooklyn, dang hipsters!) Can't wait to see them in Ottawa.

I saw The Black Keys and Flaming Lips last night. I missed the first song from the Lips as it was taking awhile to get in and navigate through Consol Energy Arena. I ate some pot cookies before the show and the Lips were pretty intense, best light show I've ever seen. They only played for just under an hour so that was a little disappointing. The Black Keys were pretty good, better than I thought they'd be (first time seeing them with a full band). They still did some songs as just the two of them and those were the best parts. The crowd seemed more into it and louder during their more popular songs, witch was kind of annoying. Giant disco ball during Everlasting Light was pretty cool.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

I went to night one of WSP at the palace and JJ the next night. It was my first time seeing a non-festival set from WSP, and I really only went because friends were going. It was more of an excuse to party, because Im not really into jam bands. HOWEVER, after night 1, I was kind of bummed to be at JJ instead of night 2 of WSP. It was a blast.

Won't be as cool as The Palace, and it's outside in an open area with no cover and Rain is expected! Should be interesting! :)

They were great in DC too and were clearly having a lot of fun on stage.  There was a lot of noise for a three piece.  A lot of stuff came from on a tape to replicate the songs on the album.... their first album is soooo good.
