I also wanna say that I'm watching AoAF right now, and theres not a person in Wilco that isn't a genius at their instrument (or song writing in Tweedys case)

This soundcheck version of "Ashes" is one of my favourites. Beautiful.

Wilco - Ashes of american flags - song from the movie

Indeed, pretty incredible version of a great song.  Nels Cline's solo is stunning.

OK, given that the Ashes of American Flags movie is coming up quite a bit, I had a question about the movie.

Flake and I were watching it not that long ago, and we got to the part at the end credits where there is this old man with Jeff saying that he is Jeff's dad.  I always thought that was just some random old person and Jeff sort of goes along with him saying he is his dad just to make fun of the guy, but Flake thought it really was his dad.

Does anyone know for certain?

I'm not 100% certain but I'm almost positive that that's his pop. Despite the lyrics in One Sunday Morning, him and his father have a really good relationship. I remember reading an interview where Jeff talks about how his dad gets pumped up for their shows.

I'm 100% certain that's his dad.  Can't you tell from their faces?  They have the exact same bulbous nose and round face.  Jeff even makes a joke about it.  That's a funny part when his Dad is going on and on about how proud he is of his son's accomplishments and Jeff gets embarrassed.

Apparently his dad also encouraged him to write the song Casino Queen.  The story goes Jeff was all bummed out about losing his money on one of those riverboat casinos and was telling his dad about it.  His dad said "Well, why don't you just write a song about it.  You might get some of your money back from the song one day."  Such a down to earth Midwestern guy.

The lyrics in One Sunday Morning aren't written from Jeff's perspective.  It's all based on a really frank conversation he had with the writer Jane Smiley's boyfriend.

If you're looking for personal family type lyrics, see Please Tell My Brother.  That's one's written about Jeff's family members, with a verse for each.

OK, so I guess the consensus is that it really is his dad he is with in that scene at the end of Ashes of American Flags.  That just surprises me as he is so condescending and sarcastic to the person, it's just hard for me to see him treating his dad that way.

It's defintely his Dad.

I never thought of him as being condescending and sarcastic to his Dad in that scene.  I was just always struck by how awkward and anxious Jeff seems to be around all those people.

They set the tone with The Boys Are Back in Town. Entire show rocked! Nailed the Daft Punk. And Surrender was perfect. Pat played mostly guitar, very little keys per rockin' set list.

Shug

Man oh man, I wish I was there to hear Boys Are Back, Surrender, Reaper, Your Bird Can Sing and so many others.  Happy for you lucky folks who were there, awesome!

One of the fellows in the group I'm travelling/staying with is a taper. He said there were at least 5 or 6 other tapers set up around the soundboard. I haven't checked VC recently, perhaps one of the recordings has already been uploaded.

Neko was outstanding tonight, lots of new material, record will be out Sept 3rd.

Fairly standard Wilco set list. Band seemed really happy but were prob more energetic last night. Highlights for me were FarFarAway and You Are My Face.
