awesome setlist guys!  slow into phone crossed off?! :'(  that would have been a highlight for me.

also, what do you guys think about moving away?  I'm not a fan of the song so I have trouble placing it anywhere in a list.  Did it work here after a long Dondante then into Smokin?

Moving Away worked really well out of Dondante. Bo started the piano out of the ending so it was a pretty smooth transition. And from memory they pretty much rolled straight into Smokin'. It was weirder not hearing touch me pt 2 after smokin'...

Still buzzing from last night, only 4 hours til they hit the stage again!

I'm not too keen on Moving Away, but it worked all right last night.  The big issue for me is tempo - Dondante is a great song, but it is slow paced for the most part.  Moving is even slower.  Smokin' is also quite a slow song, so that's three songs that could really lull the crowd into a trance.  IMO, Phone would have worked better as a transition out of Dondante.

Also needed 1 or 2 more higher tempo songs last night.  Adding Magheetah and/or Anytime would have provided more balance to the setlist.

Lay Low, though, was a huge treat.  I haven't heard the full version since I think my first MMJ show.

Sorry for the Steamlessness.  Nice to see Evelyn and the Phone you lost.  No Dondante seems odd.  No Lay Low either.

How was that First Light into Run Thru?  I've also noted that Touch Me 2 into Movin' Away is pretty neat (heard it on the Tokyo taping), as the ending Omnichord syncs with the keyboard intro very nicely.

Rest up and thanks for the reports!

Check out the photos/slideshow at the end of the article.  Any forum members in those shots between the Dawes and MMJ pics?

Nice to see they are brushing off Evelyn.  Thinking we'll see it a time or two again in preparation for Forecastle and the "Reunion."

Northern Neighbour

Too bad they didn't play Steam.  At least you got Slow Slow Tune into Phone.  That must have been awesome.

WOOOOOWWWW!!! Sorry i seemed to have ducked out of posting on here but I was at the Sydney show right in centre stage, just a bit closer to Jim than Carl. Fucking amazing! My first Jacket show.  Dondante was so freaking sweet :O

Awesome, Matt!  I was wondering if you ever made it to a show.

Just got back from the first night of the Byron Bay Bluesfest.  Jacket's set was only 75 minutes, which was 15 fewer minutes than their scheduled performance (90 minutes).  The setlist was:

Victory Dance
Circuital
I'm Amazed
Golden
Mahgeetah
Gideon
Dondante (short version)
First Light with Run Thru jam
Wordless Chorus
Holdin' on to Black Metal
One Big Holiday

While the crowd was pretty big, there weren't many Jacket fans in the audience.  The vast majority of people there were waiting to see Cold Chisel - an iconic Australian, rock / power-pop band who started in the 1970s. The show reminded me of when Beast, a band from Montreal, had the opening act for Kiss at the 2008 Ottawa Bluesfest - good performance but just the wrong crowd.

On a positive note, we finally met Weenie and her sister, although it wasn't until after the show.  Hopefully we'll connect with them during the festival and catch a few acts together.

Seems like they have been ignoring Anytime lately.   I love that song live.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

Northern Neighbour

They haven't played Anytime in ages.

I forgot to add that last night a young woman from Kentucky was standing next to us.  She's backpacking around Australia, but stopped for the festival to see Jacket.  She had a sign that had "Louisville" on the one side and "Cobra" on the other.  Carl, Jim, and Patrick all saw the sign and either smiled or gestured to her.

And with that the 2012 MMJ Oz tour comes to an end. Can only hope it's not another 3 years til they come back...
