Setlist variety

I'm new to the band's live shows and looking at the recent selists, I'm a little surprised by the lack of variety.  It seems that they're starting every show with Victory Dance and Circuital.  While I'm certainly looking forward to hearing those two songs, I feel like someone has already revealed my Christmas presents.  Is this common for the band to deliver very similar setlists for all shows of a particular tour?

short answer, yes this is normal since at least Z.  ask the older vets tho, this style might be older than that for them.  album tours always open with the first song of the album they're promoting.  Wordless in 05, Evil Urges in 08, Victory Dance/Circuital 2011.

luckily they've finally broken the perma-segue between smokin' from shootin->runthru->touch pt. 2.  that's step one.  step two is convincing them it's more entertaining if they play circuital later in the set or maybe even first.  It's a fucking long ass, fairly mellowly rockin song.

I've gotta give them credit for the songs currently being busted out tho, each one has been a quality choice rarity.  old september blues, the bear, where to begin.  plus, lay low, dancefloors and steam engine are in heavy rotation right now and those always rip.

Right. Their new songs will pretty much stay in the same spot for the tour...especially the openers. Jim said in an interview he loved the space/sound that exists between Victory Dance and Circuital...I couldn't agree more. They're great openers. They will keep certain "fan favorites," if you will, such as Golden, Gideon, Wordless, TMP2, and a few others, which makes space for only a few changes and if they keep placing these empty slots with classics such as The Bear, O (which they played last night apparently), Where to Begin then I honestly don't understand how anyone can find complaints with these setlists or question their methods.

I know they don't read these boards, but sometimes I feel they do and they answer our questions a lot through their live shows. We all wondered after T5 if any of their beloved gems would ever get back into rotation and it looks like they're doing just that and I'm happy dappy about it. Each show will now have it's own bit of magic for the crowd since we won't know what those songs will be...and everyone will get a great performance.

Best band in the world.

I agree.  They might say they don't check in here, and who knows, maybe they don't, but the word is getting to them somehow or another.  And, yes, it seems like they always answer the legitimate concerns.

the "smokin' from shootin' into end of run thru jam" from chicago is absolutely mind blowing.. they've found the perfect way to connect the present with the past MMJ.. we're witnessing history folks

I think the evil urges tour smokin->touch me pt.2->full run thru is a way more powerful ending.  but I've never been much for partial songs.

Not gonna lie, I was worried this tour was going to be pretty samey, the songs theyve been pulling out though have been phenominal. I don't expect it to stop, I think we're going to see a lot more songs getting played, and that's pretty awesome. Just let masterplan be played at merriweather or philly please...

Remember folks, they are showcasing their latest album.  They are promoting it.  This is the "Circuital" tour.  Expect to hear 90% of the album every show.  It's a "show" - it's planned, it's mastered and it's well thought out.  They put songs in certain order because it has a certain effect...post Circuital I bet you can expect to see a lot more variety, but now, no way.

Also remember who the band members are now compared to who they were in 2002.  Those aren't Carl's and Bo's songs...they're Jims.  If I was in a band, I would prefer to play the songs I contributed to...just sayin'.

"We have 10 more songs to throw into our lengthening show," says drummer Patrick Hallahan, referring to MMJ's new LP, Circuital.  "It turns out that they play well with others."  After revisiting their back catalog during a New York run last year, the Kentucky rockers are also stoked about bringing some of their earliest tunes back into rotation.  Adds Hallahan, "We're going to start having more fun with the set list."

thye're playing some gems everynight.  I'd like to maybe see a little more variety as far as song order goes but i would not complain about what we're getting now.

Hopefully when they circle back on a second leg they'll be "experimenting" more, as Patrick suggests in that RS quote

Damn I hope they start doing that a day early for the Alpharetta show.  Guess I'll definitely be going to Charlotte too on the 21st!

to me that looks like he means they're already doing that, and will be through august 21st. the philli and ACL shows probably weren't yet booked when this came out

Er... the "through August 21st" is RS's reference to their current tour schedule.  This little snippet came from a portion of RS's summer double-issue noting what bands are touring this summer.  I wouldn't read anything into anything except Patrick's quotes, which suggest (and I believe are being realized) that they're dusting off some older, more rare tunes along with most of Circuital for the current run.  I don't think there's much more between the lines than that.

You would do that?  Thanks so much.  Really, that's too kind of you.

Seriously though, I am not displeased whatsoever with the song selection.  I know that this tour is supporting Circuital and there would be a heavy emphasis on those tunes.  And the fillers have been top notch selections.  I'm just surprised that so many of the songs are played in the same spot on the setlist each night.  One of the things that I love so much about live music is not knowing what's next.  The anticipation and the excitement felt in the time between one song ending and the next one beginning.  Maybe this here internet is to blame.  The fact that I can get instant access to the setlists for shows is what started this whole thought.

Here's to hoping they get a little crazy and play the setlist in reverse order on Aug 14.

What bands play mutually exclusive setlists every night on tour?

Until they do a "we're touring because its fun tour" they're doing something that is designed to promote a product.

I don't care if the songs are the same, but if I gotta complain, I'd like some of the new ones to expand.
