Great pics, Sticky.  I'm happy for you.  Seems MMJ accidentally gave you my War Begun, but that's okay.  Sucks knowing about songs cut from the setlist, especially one you wanted.

(brief Yacking - I snagged a Boston setlist from Ryan Pickett with Wonderful not crossed off.  At first I'm like, did they play it and I was too wasted to remember?  Then I realized I haven't heard Wonderful in any of the 5 shows this year.  Seems you got my Wonderful, too. )

What did ya think of live First Light.  I've loved it from the start, but lots of folks put it at the bottom of the list.

I also need a description of Lowdown.  Someone said it was rocked out.  Must have recording.

Anyway, glad you got your show, got some War, didn't get arrested, etc.

The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

Big Nasty

1) I was there last night and it was amazing. Roll Call status paid off in a huge way.

2) "Lowdown" and "War Begun" were the highlights for me. This was my 12th show over the years and this was as good as any setlist - although they played "The Dark" once in Chicago in 2006 and that was just unreal. I digress... "Phone Went West" is a huge favorite of mine as well and I think it would have made my head explode. I also am blaming Neko's technical difficulties.

3) This band is just so consistently kick ass. I made the comment recently that following MMJ on tour is like following your favorite baseball team over the summer - except they kick ass and win every night in spectacular fashion. They have done a good job making many of their shows accessible via the interweb. And of course, it's just a special feeling to be there live whenever possible.

4) If you give me, or rather my internet connection, about another hour or so, I will have 5 full songs taken in stunning HD from just in front of Jim posted on the ol' Youtube - Off the Record, Lowdown, Touch Me Pt 1, Wonderful, and .... War Begun.

I will wait patiently for that Lowdown, sir.

I think they are up now on YT, search 'My Morning Jacket Detroit 2011'

What an incredible show, 6th time seeing the band and they amaze me every time. So many highlights.

1.)Dondante-What happened here? a 20 minute(?) long version done like never before. A special moment in time. I've never heard the song like this.
2.)Lowdown-Beautiful intro jam and beautiful version of the song
3.)War Begun-Need I say more?
4.)The tune with Neko...Never listened to her before but am an instant fan.

Plus the classics of the tour, Victory Dance had a slow build that rocked hard, Wordless Chorus, Touch me 2 right into touch me 1. I just can't say enough about this show.

Awesome poster, awesome people, beautiful weather. Great night.

Anyone have a recording of Dondante? I want to relive it and show my friends the 'new' version. It was stellar.

that war begun set me off my.  so so so so so so so sooooo glad they're not ending with smokin-runthru->touch pt 2 anymore.  it makes that ending so much more wild.  when they played first light it jammed.  still think they need to jam that end out more.   it was short and random but fit perfect.  the touch me part 1 after part 2 was PERFECT placement and I figured that was pretty much it but then bam! WAR BEGUN!  it was like getting punched a good 10 or 15times in the stomach.  the you wanna freak out placement as 3rd was really cool too.  its what I needed to keep my brain fresh.  after that it was just nuts.  Lowdown came so early it was surreal, didn't set in at first.  I leaned to my friend "this is rare dude".  and it rocked.

I kept trying to give jim weird looks but every time he'd look away before making eye contact.  he was in all our faces up front, totally awesome.  everybody looked to be having a great time.  Patrick was KILLING it last night, he was on fire.

Have you successfully done this before and gotten a reaction out of Jim? Im kind of tempted to try it now if it's worth doing...

I just kept reinforcing the awesome that was happening.  whenever a jam was getting insane or he was just laying down a sick lead I'd kind give him this "oh yeah bitch, that's what I'm talking about look"  spaz out, etc.  I was soaked in sweat.  the only time I stood still was wonderful.  sat there, caught my breath. laughed when jim hit the guitar tech with his chord telling him to get away from him with that damned guitar haha.  that wonderful vocal only first verses was really good, the crowd put in a good effort singing with jim.

did anybody see me wipe out in the pit?  during the beginning of the show I was jumped and shit and fell over like such a douche bag.  but I got back up and started jumping again.  that's what up, that's what it takes to rock at an mmj show sons and daughters.

Haha, yeah I did see that. Looked like no one minded and that you bounced back just fine though.

;D Sounds like an incredible night...wonderful Acapella and that TM pt II into pt I into War Begun is blowing my mind just thinking about it. Come to think of it, I dont know why they dont play TM pt II into pt I more often. I've always thought of them as a seamless single song anyway.

I'm most anxious to hear more about this jam between lay low and dondante...

haha!! I was totally "that guy" at this show.  it's been years since I've seen them, too much pent of energy.  I actually had like room.  I felt like those dudes at bonnaroo who just spin around in circles while not giving a fuck and people let him go at it. haha.  right before we went in my friend bigelow goes "hey, want some whiskey?" and it's like fuck. "..yeah.." fucking convinced this band needs the crowd to be awesome for them to peak out like they did last night.   not belligerent drunk, but drunk enough to where the crowd totally lets go of fear of looking stupid.

matt/ilikebeer - really sorry we didn't meet up.  I got too wasted and by the time I got the texts the show was already going down.

I'm most anxious to hear more about this jam between lay low and dondante...

the key here is once lay low started it set the place off.  everybody in the house and on the lawn really let loose.  the lay low went into heavy rock interplay, I'm not sure if jim set a loop or what but then they just sorta jammed on this really psychedelic groove/lead thing it was substantial.  it was just for a second, it evolved into a little thing.  but the weird part about it was dondante started underneath it.  patrick got it going and jim started singing as the jam was still going a little bit, then in tappered back into a normalish, but still faster paced dondante.  the solos in dondante weren't typical in either section.  when jim did the riffs that trigger the next section there was jamming and grooving over top of it like no other.  it. was. intense.  everything was so loose and free all night.  everybody seemed to be feeling good.

Well I just rolled back into Woo town after a freaking epic night in Rochester Hills!  Took a little detour to Ann Arbor this morning to eat at one of my favorite diners to replenish my body with a lot of greasy goodness after expending so much during the show last night!   :D

All I have to say is I would pretty much echo everyone's wonderful reviews that have already been written.  There were so many highlights:  Wonderful acapella with the crowd singing along, Lowdown, War Begun, the epic Dondante.  When I saw that set-list with Phone crossed off, I almost cried, but, as I shared with my wife as we ate breakfast, that show was already epic.  I don't know if my brain could have handled Phone last night on top of all the epic goodness that show already brought!   :D  I would also add how I am so freaking glad I took the plunge with the Roll Call membership!  Just getting tix to the Circuital release show in Louisville paid for the membership in and of itself.  But getting into the pit last night at Meadow Brook was effing AWESOME! I had never been to this venue so I wasn't prepared at how freaking small the Pit actually was and when my wife and I walked in and looked down I was like, Oh yeah, it's on mf'ers!!!   8)

Sticky/Mark, bummer about not getting to meet up with you as well.  You must have been just to the right of us judging by the angle of your photos!  Hopefully we can meet up the next time MMJ comes through Detroit and hopefully they don't wait so long to get back there.  My wife and I were directly in front of Jim on the step up from the pit so she could have a better view as she's a bit vertically challenged.  Being that close completely changes my perspective on wanting to get as close as possible in all future shows I attend!

Funny story from last night.  They gave us wristbands to wear to allow us to get into the pit at the will-call window.  As my wife and I are walking into the venue heading for the porta-johns, these 3 pigs are standing behind the ticket building and call out to us asking us what's with the freaking wrist-bands we had on?  I'm thinking why the hell wouldn't they know what the wristbands are for and what the hell do they think they are, laced with lsd or something???   ;D  Several fans saw us getting harrassed and were joining in telling me I was targeted a) because I had a Dead shirt on and b) because of my beard!   8)  So, I did get to have a brief encounter with Oakland's finest after all Sicky!   ;)
