That's a great video!  No idea who it refers to though.  I'll bet the guy singing is JK, don't know for sure though.

I'm with ya chode, I'm not a huge fan of radiohead by any means. I like some stuff, not all. I'm seeing them for the first time next Friday and I'm thinking about backing out for financial reasons. Most people think thats absolutely bizarre, but I just don't get it. Also, Thom leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I've never seen petty, but absolutely love him. I really hope he's there. One of my favorite opening lines ever - "Honey don't walk out I'm too drunk to follow..."

I don't care if its RHCP. I've expressed my interest in them many times here, but I'm hoping for something I'm drawn too, rather than just content with.  I really really really can't see them playing in Lousiville twice in one summer.

Initial Pitchfork line up certainly doesn't hold any wanted artists from being at Forecastle.

I'm so confused. They are geniuses.

Well, I don't think you can ever have too many great songs, its just a matter of if you feel the need to play all of them every night or not, but I think I know what you mean.  And with Petty, its the same songs every night.  I think Free Fallin' is a great song, but I've heard it at every Petty show since it came out.  If he played it every third night, for example, and  in its place rotated in some of his lesser-known masterpieces, it'd make long-time fans coming back for more.

I know what you mean about MMJ needing to mix it up more and i think even Wilco could stand to do more. For my money, The Black Crowes have it right.  Out of the 6 or 7 "hit" songs they have, they usually play 2 or 3 of them each night.  If you wanna hear She Talks To Angels, you are gonna have to go see them more than once or just get lucky if you are only going to one show.  There are always casual fans who go see one show and complain afterwards about what hit they didn't get to hear, but for the fanbase who goes to lots of shows and I presume for the band, too, it keeps things way fresher and they are able to dig far deeper into their repertoire on a regular basis.

I've been seeing Petty live since 1986 and I've seen him so many times doing basically the same show night after night tour after tour, its really gotten stale for me.  I'm a huge fan and I completely agree the Heartbreakers are one of the greatest rock bands of all time, not for overhwhelmingly passionate and physical rocking out, but for the way they play as an ensemble, super tight and super economical (most of the time).  They are a song band, not a jam band.  Their mastery of the 3 minute popular rock 'n' roll song is unrivaled.

But I've always said if they'd just mix up their setlists like the Grateful Dead or The Black Crowes,  they'd be even more huge.  They'd have legions of fans who'd see them night after night after night.  I really think they feel they have to play every hit every night so that no casual attendee goes home disappointed.  In my opinion, its a mistake from the artistic perspective, but it's probably made them more money in the long run.  I have a hard time respecting that decision, but who am I to say?

I also agree about the documentary Runnin' Down A Dream being a great way to really gain an appreciation for this band.  They have been uncompromising, determined and honestly trying to treat their fans and the music right for decades and that is a rare quality in rock.

But if you REALLY wanna understand why the Heartbreakers have a legitimate claim to the title The World's Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band, track down the last night of their 20-night run at the Fillmore in San Francisco (yes, they played 20 nights in a row) in 1997.  It was a three and a half hour show and half of it was covers, just freight-train powerful rock 'n' roll.  It was radio broadcast and shouldn't be that hard to find on etree or dime or whatever.  They don't do that any more, but Petty is still well worth seeing live at least once.  Like someone said, its all about the super fun sing-alongs and getting lost in the joy of hearing hit after hit after hit (as long as your aren't already sick of them).  Just don't go see him twice on the same tour expecting any variation at all.

Word to all of this, Shug.  I'd think that as musicians they'd get bored playing the same set every night.  If they do, you sure can't tell - they definitely bring it.

I really did love that documentary, fascinating stuff.

I think Wilco is the perfect example...they mix it really well...not to the point where their sets are completely different but they play enough new songs to see them back to back  nights.

Totally agreed with this.

a.  agreed that pitchfork festival lineup was good news- ie nothing there I regret missing in the least.

b.  I saw Petty in 2010 when he opened for MMJ (although played second for some reason)   I wouldn't call myself a big fan one way or another, but can't help but know all the songs.   To my neutral eye I thought the show was a snoozefest.   Besides the fun of a sing-a-long, there wasn't much to get thrilled about.   Great musicianship but so buttoned up and restrained as to feel passionless.

while we're on the subject of competing festivals july 13 -15, Bunbury Festival announced 3 more bands today.   So along w/ the headliners Jane's addiction, Death Cab, and Weezer, they just added Airborne Toxic, Manchester Orchestra, and Gym Class Heroes.

Of course, it didn't help that Petty had to follow MMJ.  Even as an opener, MMJ set the bar high.  I was bored by the Petty set after getting all charged up by a short but sweet face melting.
The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

Yowza. Even with only one confirmed band, I don't see any July festival touching Forecastle. No homer.

One of the most underrated front men in rock, IMHO. I get why people don't like Radiohead, the studio stuff comes off as dark and moody...but live it takes on a more robust feel.

Obviously I don't know your finances but I would suggest going if it's not that big of a deal.

the Crowes don't really have as many hits so they can def mix it up and basically play whatever but that is more of a jam mentality.    Wilco are interesting because they don't really have "hits" but there are some songs that are hits to their fans...so when they don't play those you hear some complaints.  Wilco also did a tour last year where they were playing like 40 songs a night so that was pretty impressive.

Even MMJ.  I don't mind them playing OBH every show because it is really a great song and I'd kind of be disappointed if they didn't play it...but with Petty he has about 30 of those songs.

I've seen Petty a bunch and never ever been bored by the show....but I also don't go see him to the point where I'd could get bored by the set.

I should really limit my excitement and just play it cool with only a day before the lineup drops...

But Charles Bradley just followed Forecastle on Twitter.

I'll put the champagne on ice.

Really shouldn't get anyone's hopes up... but this seems increasingly likely.

And hey, if it doesn't pan out, at least we can all be disappointed together. Misery loves company.

For numerous reasons I haven't seen Wilco since August 2008. I think they hate Philadelphia.

If they don't play Forecastle I won't be too upset, since NOT seeing them has become the new norm for me.

But if they are part of the lineup... well... I'd probably be more excited to see them than any other band on the bill.

when linked to youtube there are some similar videos that pop up on the side, containing Adele, Jason Mraz and the Temptations cover songs.  Not sure I'm getting anything from this video...
Y'all got any disco ball back there?

This excites me more than anything.  He put on my favorite show this year so far and I don't see anyone topping it....just pure soul and mind blowing emotion.

Tutofqueens

So if I'm gettin this straight, so far we've got Barbra Streisand, Staind, Will smith, and Toby keith headlining Forecastle with the boys! best. lineup. ever.
