okay,
Here's "I Think I'm Goin to Hell"

Tuning: Bb F Bb F Bb D ~note: this is impossible to tune to on anything but an acoustic.

I hope you have a chromatic tuner. If not, to tune to this, first tune your G string down so that it is the same note as the third fret of your D string. then tune your B string down so that it is the same as the fifth fret of newly retuned F string. The high E string should be lowered to half steps by making sure that it is the same note as the 4th fret of the Bb string.

Now for the bass notes. The D string should be lowered to Bb. This means that it when yo hit the 7th fret, it will be the same note as the F string. The A string should be lowered to F using the good old 5th fret method, and the low E gets the Bb treatment via the 7th fret method which was just used on the D string, only now it's an octave lower.

Now onto the song. Hope I didn't just confuse you more.

For convenience's sake, I'm gonna name the chords

Bb - 000540
Fmin/open - 000-12-10-0
Eb/open - 000-10-9-0

Eb - 555555
Eb(sus) - 555575

F - 777777
Fsus - 777797

Bb(h) - 12-12-12-12-12-12
F(h) - 777777
(the "h" stands for harmonic)

Intro:

1 bar............1 bar.................2 bars
Eb/open.......Fmin/open..........Bb

Remember to bend up the 9th fret a half-step when playing the Fmin chord. I bend this by pulling it toward the high E string, so that the 10th fret can still ring

Verse:
Doooooooooown in the ceeeeiteeee
Eb or Eb(sus).....................Bb

and so on...

in ashes on the ground
Bb(h)    Eb(h)     Bb(h)

they think they're goin to hell
Bb(h)    Eb(h)     Bb(h)

Ooooooooooout in the hooooooooollow
Eb or Eb(sus).....................Bb

etc...

and i
thiiiiiiiiiiink my ooooooooooother would kill me
F or Fsus..........Eb or Eb/sus..........Bb

if she knew what i was about
Bb(h)    Eb(h)     Bb(h)

i think I'm goin to hell
Bb(h)    Eb(h)     Bb(h)

play the intro again

then the interlude which is just the
F then Eb then B
progression behind the
Devils and demons are comin

and then you end it with the harmonic pattern played earlier

if you want to incorporate the electric guitar bit into this and make it for solo (I know Jim doesn't play it like this in the video, this is just my personal interpretation) you can play the intro liek this:

Fmin(open)
Eb(open)
Bb

Fmin(open)
Eb(open)
000-12-12-12

and play that twice after the normal intro

There ya go!

Is there any way to incorporate a capo so that I don't have to strain my guitar so much trying to tune this up? I have a Martin D42 and I don't want to risk tearing it up.

It shouldn't cause much/any strain on your guitar, your just loosening the strings a few steps.  And if your playing on a D42, there should be even to worry about - i can't imagine a high end geeter like that getting hurt by some dropped tuning.

But i can't seem to think of anyway to alter the tuning or use a capo because of the open strings that get played and the harmonics used – but then again I don't know all that much about tunings as particular as this one, so maybe someone else might now.

But if you are nervous maybe check with the tech at your guitar shop, or hell just fill out the warrantee card and file that baby away in a safe place, which i would hope you already did if you went and got yourself a D42.

I tried to answer this twice last a week ago, but my darn computer kept freezing, so no go. I took it in to get repaired, so it's good now.

You're guitar will be fine. Trust me on this. I don't mean to sound cocky or condescending, but this is work experience pretty much. I've worked in a guitar repair shop for over two years now, and done plenty of set-ups and truss rod adjustments and all. And it won't harm your guitar. If might be a precarious position if you were tuning up, or leaving the guitar in this tuning for a month straight, but since you're doing neither (i would hope you would find another song to play in a month's time), there's no big harm done.

It's about the same stress on the guitar neck as taking the strings off to restring it, which is hardly nil. That's exactly what we do for every guitar we set-up, so nothin doin. Since you're tuning the strings so low, it's just some tension being taken off the neck, but when you tune back up it comes all right back, since the string guages are all the same and nothing's changing.

It won't hurt her one bit, my friend. :)

Good to hear - this guitar has been passed down 3 generations, so I'm really cautious with it...

I've been playing a somewhat bastardized version with standard tuning, and it works pretty well...

(The tab is ridiculously long, but check out this portion)
