They had a dive trip last year? I'd be interested but haven't been in 10 years when I got certified. They offer a crash course or only for current certified divers?

they've had SCUBA excursions at both prior events - you just need to have an open water certification.  Only about 12 people went the first year (4 dudes weren't even certified but somehow snuck through without cards) - maybe 20 or so people 2nd year and a much better dive shop out of Puerto adventuras - 2 dives - mostly 30-40 feet, but some reef walls down to 60-70 feet.  Lots of big turtles and eels

I highly recommend booking excursions separately from the resort unless your looking to mingle with fellow OBHers.

We used this service for OBH1 and it was an incredible experience. Private van for four, incredible tour guide, "Sal your pal", and saw both Chichen Itza and Coba in the same day. Think the entire price for all four of us was abiur $300.

How long of a drive is this? I'd love to do this excursion, but don't want to spend the whole day in a van...

Just looking on Google Maps, looks like about 2.5 hours one way.

Cuz it's been so long since someone shattered me.

Little under two and a half hours. We were picked up around 7 and got back around 7 that night. The drive itself was pretty interesting. The way they set it up, we went to Chichen Itza first before most of the crowds.  It was an incredible experience. Then drove to a cenote and ate lunch. We then headed to Coba, where you can climb to the top of one of the biggest pyramids in all of Mexico. Truly incredible.

If you use the link, ask for "Sal your pal".  He was awesome, personable and the best driver we could ask for.  Thinking back, the drive time was a breeze and the return trip is chopped up by lunch and the trip to Coba.

IMO I don't think it is necessary to book outside tour companies if the excursion is offered using Resort Credit.

OBH1 we really wanted to go to Coba and Tulum in the same day, but it wasn't offered using RC that year, so we booked a private tour.  Everything was great, but it was about $400 for 2 people.  Even if you have 4 people, I still think they charge a per-person charge with a minimum.  We went with YukaTrek, and like I said everything worked out well (except for my sprained ankle on Coba), just expensive.

OBH2 we went to Chichen Itza using RC and I believe there were only 1 or 2 other couples that went from HR and we picked up a few more people at near-by resorts, but still under 15 people.  And since we used RC, we only paid about $30 a person plus tip for the guide and driver.

Anyone remember if in past OBHs there was a boat trip that wasn't a diving trip?

I had to look at old emails, but the excursions and activities were emailed on 1/16 for OBH2. I didn't remember it being that close to the event, but that was 2 years ago. I can't wait to be back in Mexico! 31 sleeps!!!

thanks. i had no idea it might still be a couple weeks away.

MMJCOBRA

Just depends on what you're looking for on the excursions and what's offered. For roughly 560 for four people, you do really get your money's worth. No extra stops, totally engaged driver, etc.

Last year we just took a cheap cab ride to Tulum for the day and it was fun too although not nearly as impressive.

supposedly excursion and activity announcement coming this week - stay tuned!

Just signed up for the waiting list. Anyone know how many years I might be looking at?

ok, if i understand correctly these trips offered thru OBH3 cost extra out of pocket, but are timed to fit the OBH3 schedule.

so is the following a link to the trips that we can use resort credits for?

That's my understanding.  In the past we have used our credits at the spa.

thanks. we're getting the extra $750 in credits for arriving a day early, trying to figure out when and where to use them.

i'm a bit surprised to see the playa del carmen shuttle is monday only. thought that might be an everyday thing. guess we could grab a taxi, just not all that comfortable leaving the resort on our own. cultural paranoia.

We have done a taxi into Playa De Carmen in the past and had no issues. For what its worth, the spa at the Hard Rock is awesome, so using the credits there for those into a relaxing massage or whatever is a great way to use em. Both my wife and I enjoy at least one per trip and more often than not more....
