First post here so be gentle folks.

Anyhow - Xmas Curtain - love this song, but what exactly is a
Xmas Curtain? Is it an American term?

Tried a forum search and Wiki but no joy.

BH

I am not sure if this is what you mean, but some people shorten the word "Christmas" by using Xmas.  I am not sure how that got started but the song should read Christmas Curtain.

Kind of like It beats 4 U.

OK, now I am thinking you just meant what is a "Christmas Curtain" and I don't know.  I think it's a Jim thing.

I have never been able to figure that song out.  Anyone?

Tks for that, but I thought it might have had a particular significance.

i.e. the lyric

The Chrismas curtain falls on lawbreakers.

+

you pay to get behind her Chrismas curtain.

Not familiar with that term here in the UK.

Kory

I think it's a skirt and the "presents" are behind it. Also there are things you can take (heist) that are not exactly material items if you know what I mean...

In reading the lyrics closer, this is definately sexual and deals with paying for it and or taking it... thoughts?

peanut butter puddin surprise

i'm not certain what the line "So, to all you frowns go down to town square and get some action, from the xmas girl that lives inside your womb" means...I don't have a womb!   ;)
Runnin' from somethin' that isn't there

MMJ_fanatic

sure you do John--it just never developed.  haven't you heard that boys and girls are virtually inditinguishable in the womb until they differentiate sometime after 7 weeks into development :o
Sittin' here with me and mine.  All wrapped up in a bottle of wine.

Brain hurts now - but came up with this -

You don't think by any chance that MMJ are advocating that
shop-lifting is OK as long as its for Xmas?

such as -

 me and j who'd pay,
but cant afford the finer things in life so we heist them all..

and -

So, to all you frowns go down to town square and
get some action,  (frowns - normal law-abiding citizens?)

The Christmas curtain falls on lawbreakers  (an amnesty or somthing similar?)

the criminal that never breaks the law!  (Its Xmas they can't do you for it?)

Wild I know but its all I can come up with.

Excellent interpretation.  That sounds right on to me.   It seems like I've seen or read an interview with Jim on this at one time, and from what I remember your interpretation echoes his explanation.

In Jerry McGuire, Cuba Gooding's character accuses him of "shoplifting the pooty."  Maybe that's what he means by heisting the finer things in life.

Who is O?

Maybe X-mas curtain is just something they made up. The band just has a very surreal style.

Do you mean O as in
O is the one that is real?

If so then - I think  thats possibly an abreviation for

radi O

as when he sings - Radio is real at the end of the song.

just my tuppence worth.

Anyone know any better?

Geoff.

To be honest, by "O" I always thought he meant the devil.

Similar to The Bear. A Bear is never mentioned in the song, we just assume that he meets a bear at the pear and gets eaten or attacked.

O = the devil ???
You're going to have to explain that one.

So when he's talking about the radio playing he's talking about "devil music".  Is the televisor some sort of alter to the devil then?  Sorry, I'm not getting that from that song.

The Bear is a cautionary song, I don't think I can be assumed anyone actually gets eaten at the pier (not pear, btw). afterall, there's still time for you!

I always thought he says "The Radio will play" at the end but I am not sure.

The title of the song "O is the one that is real" seems to have a satanic quality. But I have to agree with you, after re-listening to the song, I'm sure they are not talking about the devil.

The Bear, on the other hand. The lyrics say things like, "It's a bad idea to go down to the pier after dark." and "I knew I shouldn't have gone." And with a title like The Bear, it looks very much like he is talking about some sort of encounter with a bear.

I always thought it kind of sounded like he was saying,"it's a bear out there," instead of "it's a bad idea." Maybe someone heard him sing it and was like,"it sounds like you're saying bear." Jim was probably like,"yeah, it does...wait a second...that'd be a kickass semi-metaphoric title for this song." Or at least that's how I like to think of it.

Anyway, if I were a bear down at the pier, I'd probably be upset. I'd be like,"how did I get on this pier?" I'd be upset.
