Jim James and American Idol

Hey,

American Idol is in full swing and I don't know if any of you like the show or find it entertaining to watch it.  But, I do like it because it is a pretty "real" reality show and it's just plain funny to watch terrible singers get on there who think they're God's gift to the music industry get slammed by Simon.  

So, my question is...If Jim James in some alternate reality didn't have a band and decided to go on the show...how far do you think he would get?

Also, let me know what you think each judge would say to him?

Sorry, I can't watch that show.  I hate the idea of winning a contest and getting a record deal.  Pop music sucks.   :P

Isn't it fixed? We're supposed to believe that some of the contestants don't know how just shit they are? We're supposed to believe that they really think they're talented & have a chance? With some of the clips I've seen that's really pushing it...

It depends on what pop music you mean. the kind in American Idol and similar shows do sucks, yes. But there also is another kind of pop music, at least there are in Sweden,  with many very good musicians that makes music with catchy chorus and verses that actually are written by any meaning. And that writing their own songs. Kind of singer songwriter music, but it's classifies as pop music. For example I can mention Suburban Kids with Biblical Names, Hello Saferide, Frida Hyvönen, Jenny Wilson, Jens Lekman, José Gonzales etc. That's another kind of pop music which is really good. I think I will call that kind of music for indie pop or maybe Alternative pop.

i'm with you on that one EMR - we have an idol program here in australia too (which sucks. from time to time when there's nothing else to put on tv they show the american idol too... more of same crap really)

apart from that sort of pop music, which i REALLY don't like (even apart from the fact that the winner gets promoted to death, their single gets played everywhere, then 10 minutes later no one ever hears from them again.. & their careers head down the toilet of one-hit-wonders) there is a really healthy & interesting (indie) pop scene - people doing their own thing, creating really great music which is about a million miles from anything the idol machine churns out (thank god)

There's a swedish Idol show too, and it sucks big time! I can't stand it. Though I'm watching it anyway, but mostly because of seeing how bad the participators are. It's kinda entertaining. HAHA!!!

Yeah, I kind of love indie pop, sometimes. (Though it's hard to avoid because there's so much indie pop music in Sweden. It feels like it's going to be the new folkmusic around here.) Anyway, I'm mostly listening to alt-country, americana and shit like that, though. :P

Oh, and by me saying 'pop music sucks' I was referring to that bland corporate pop.  I mean...The BEATLES were a pop band and they were awesome.  You could call the new pornographers power pop and I love them to death.  I guess it all depends on what context you use it in.

He would get to be shown on the 'ol tv for the auditions, where he is ridiculed for his unconventional voice and told to never sing in public again, and that is it.

Really I've wondered the same thing about a lot of singers in bands I love.  Almost exclusively I'd bet they'd be passed over without a second thought.  

But know what?  They ain't trying to find quality artists and that is a simple fact.  They want to find someone that can be sold as a pop star.  The show reeks, but at least they ain't passing it off like they are searching for the great unknown rock music genius.

really cowell is a genius.  hes basically doing something he did every day, search for marketable talent, only now he does it on tv, gets paid, gets advertising campaigns because of his television show and then owns the winners who are managed by his company, produced by his company, and sold by his company.  not to mention all the other people who dont "win" yet are good enough to get contracts which are managed by his company, produced by his company and sold by his company.  hes totally the new lou, pearlman that is.  

hes one of those shady pieces of shit who makes millions and millions while giving the talent a pittance until they are no longer marketable at which point they are dropped yet often still stuck in contracts with his company and therefore not allowed to seek music work with other producers, management, record companies or in any other facet of the music industry.
