Does anyone know if they plan to do that again this year?
I just FINALLY got the MMJ download and it's kicking my ass as I type this. I really hope that they keep up the board recordings this year.

How does that work?  Do they record straight from the board, or do they have recording mics set in place?  Does the band hire someone to do it, or do people do it on their own - just make friends with the sound guy and he lets them plug it in...  Or do the sound guys do it?

Here's some info from the site:

Live Bonnaroo offers downloads of high fidelity, mastered, remixed multi-track recordings, all of which have been approved by the artists. The sets are from the 2004 Bonnaroo Music Festival. Sets are available in both MP3 and CD-quality lossless formats (FLAC), powered by nugs.net's state-of-the-art delivery system.

Live Bonnaroo files may be burned freely to CD, transferred to portable mp3 players, or played through your PC or Mac. Each Live Bonnaroo set comes with custom printable booklets, tray inlays, and labels if you elect to burn your files to CD.

Man, I hope they do it this year. MMJ and DBT!

Maybe you should go!!

(heh)

But, like, let's say for the Nashville show - who recorded that, and who initiated that recording?
(I don't mean name names, I just mean is it usually the band who sets that up, or is it a person who does it of their own volition?  And are they allowed, or do they have to ask permission?)

A situation like the Nashville show is almost always just recorded by a fan with tapeing equipment, some bands don't mind audience recordings in fact alot of bands encourage it (these bands are usually the ones that actually have tallent and put on really good shows) then you have bands that won't allow taping (coincidentaly, these bands usually suck anyway).  Pearl Jam has always encouraged taping and they still allow it to this day, even though they record all thier shows through the sound board and sell them.  You really apppreciate sound board quality when you get to bigger venues, the exit/in is so small that the audience recording turned out terrific, it also has to do with the skill of the recorder, it is an art all in itself.  These tapers are actually angles sent from heaven that spend big bucks and share music with no incentive of financial gain, they just do it out of love and respect for music and the fans.

I know the guy that recorded the Nashville show. I met him at a couple of Truckers shows at the Mercy Lounge.
MMJ has an audience recording policy, so he was technically allowed to record it. He did that one with a couple of mics in the air.

I guess the Bonnaroo people organized the board recordings since they got the band's approval to release it.

Cool.  Thanks for explaining, guys.  :)

oh, for the record they are angels not angles.   oops

A straight SBD recording at a place like Exit/In with a band like MMJ would be shitty. The vocals are obviously going to be high in the mix because the guitars aren't going to need a whole lot of input through the board.

For example, Cooley from the DBTs usually has his amp up much higher than the other guitars, so the SBD wouldn't have much of him at all. But if you combine a SBD with an audience recording (a matrix), you usually get a really sweet recording. The vocals are going to usually be more audible and crisp than a regular audience recording...

How interesting!  I'm really glad that you know so much about this stuff, 'wig.  It's very useful. :)

You know, if a band really wanted to do something extravegant to show thier fans just how much they appreciate them, they would record one show in it's entirety (soundboard quality) make it a show with alot of rarities and hardcore fan favorites and host it on thier site for free!!!!! hint hint
