As far as I know you can smoke at bars in B'ham. I'm sure you can at Sloss. Sloss really is about the coolest venue I've been to. There's nothing else like it.

I found this page through a Google image search. The place where the band plays is (I think) on the right on the 6th row down and in the middle of the 8th row. It looks like a gravel floor in those pics but that's not how it is anymore. You can see it from the outside in other pics. It's the long gray metal building.

Ho. lee. crap.  Corey, can we check this shit out in the afternoon while it's still light?  It looks very awesome!!

I don't see why you couldn't.  It's like a state park kind of deal.  Sort of like the Vulcan statue.  But what with the concert later that night and shee-ahht, they might have the place locked down for soundchecks and setting up.

True. ÊI hadn't thought of that. ÊHm. Ê
I certainly would NOT want to create any weirdness with security, or distract anybody from their rock 'n roll set up.
(I guess it might still be light when we get there anyway...)

It looks like you can tour the actual furnace part during the day. The last time I went to a concert, the gates didn't open for that section of the grounds until about 6:00, I think.

Here's some info about the tour:

Dear Google Master,

Thank you for all of your recent googling efforts.

Take care,

Did I not mention the Sloss/Counting Crows story here before?
A buddy and I went to BHam a couple of years ago to see the Counting Crows at Sloss. We got to town early so that we could get a burger at the Purple Onion (that's a damn fine burger!). We got bored and decided that we would drive on over to Sloss to see what was going on over there. We thought that maybe we could hear the soundcheck from outside of the gates.

Well, I don't remember specific times, but we were there roughly 3 hours before the concert started. It was still daylight and we could hear some noises when we got out of the car. They were apparently getting the levels on the snare drum. We then decided to go closer to the gate and the damn thing was standing wide open. We decided that we would try to walk in and see if anyone would give us any hell.

Not one person bothered to ask us for credentials or a ticket. So we get to the back of the venue/concrete slope. We're back by the soundboard at this point. You can see of the Crows onstage either tuning or messing with their instruments while the soundguy gets the levels on the rest of the drums. Once the drummer is done, the band started playing a song that i hadn't heard before. This was back a month or so before Hard Candy was released.

Anyway, they played the same song again and then went through 2 more of the new songs. No one bothered us the whole time. We didn't go past the soundboard because we were SURE that someone would ask us to leave, but they never did.

The opening band then came out and did their soundcheck. Once they were done, we decided that we would just hang out until we were asked to go back outside, but they never did. We kept an eye on the front gate and waited for them to open the gates to the public. I'm not sure at what point they locked them. Once they opened them, we made our way to front-row, center and stayed there until the end of the show.

Twilightzzz

hell yeah. i'm glad to hear that a lot of you guys are coming.  As far as meeting up, well , i can't predict what us mississippians will be wearing at the time of the concert, but what i can forsee is that we will be raisin all sorts of hell at the show. i mean that in a good way. you know, havin a good time and all.  soo, if you want to meet some crazzy jacket fans, just merely look for the most ragin, out of control, drunk ass, obliviously crazy nutballs in the crowd...thats us.  i promise, whether you realize, approve, or what not, you most likely will take notice of us and KNOW that WE are having a mighty mighty good time.
i wish the same for all of you guys. RAGE HARD!!!and ROCK N ROLL!!!!!!!

peace out

Timmy

Twightzzz I hope you and your wild and "Drunk Ass" friends don't ruin the enjoyment for other MMJ fans around you.I like to have a good time and do like to drink but I try to be respectful to people who came to enjoy the majestic qualities that make up a MMJ show.I'v been to shows were  drunken people have talked and yelled through some of Jim's quiet acoustic tunes, which can ruin the whole ambience of his great songs.Have a great time but please have respect for the band and their fans without destracting from the show on stage.

Drunkre

We should definitely get together before the show and tour the place.  That would be hella-awesome; plus, it would be hella-easier to spot each other.  Going to Birmingham tonight; driving a crappy car; wish me luck.

Everyone's seen antoniostrohs avatar, right?  By the way, has anyone else been sucked in by Nickelodeon's Avatar series; it's badass, that's all I can say.  Anyway, back to the topic.  antoniostrohs has, quite possibly, the coolest avatar ever.  I copied into MS Paint, and am currently in the process of turning it into an iron-on patch.  Now, I've seen the movie "PCU," as I'm sure have all of you.  In that movie, the main character tells a guy, "Don't be the guy wearing the band t-shirt to the same band's concert...Don't be that guy."  Dammit, I wanna be that guy.  I mean, this is a cool ass pic.  Pabst Blue Ribbon for God's sakes!!!

Go!  Do it!  I think it's wicked when people wear band shirts to concerts.  Plus, it'll make things a LOT easier when we're looking for you.  I swear, I am going to be looking for Noam Chomsky. ;)

I put this together using one of the photos from the gallery. Since I am a big fella, I can't find MMJ shirts in my size, so I'm going to see if I can get my buddy to screenprint this for me:

EC

Very rock, corey.  I think homemade tshirts are nicer anyhow.  It's just a little more effort, and shows the love.  :)

(Mind you, the promoters might feel differently.  Ah well.)

corey

I understand, but they don't like fat people apparently, or don't believe that we exist...

EC

It must be so frustrating.   >:(

In other news, just read this about the BHam show:
