Slip into My Morning Jacket

Classic southern sound -- or, if you're underage, a show across town

The Showbox, located on First Avenue and Pike Street in the heart of downtown Seattle, is fairly well known for bringing the cream of the musical crop to the city. While not offering bands as obscure as the fare at Chop Suey, or as intimate a venue as Neumo's or the Crocodile, the Showbox still remains one of the best places around town to see your favorite independent artists perform. The club is well decorated yet subtle, with great views of the stage from all angles.

Most importantly, near-legendary indie veterans My Morning Jacket bring their booze-soaked, bluesy brand of rock to the Showbox this Friday. Their latest album, Z, is quite possibly one of the best of their career, and is certain to top quite a few year-end lists. Forgoing the aforementioned blues-rock to pursue an understated pop sound, Z is a record that wouldn't have sounded out of place on rock stations 30 years ago, with tracks like "Off the Record" deserving a lot of praise. Particularly, the album showcases the impressive range of vocalist Jim James -- finally moving his awe-inspiring falsetto to the forefront.

And what better way to experience the effect of James' voice than to be there on Friday, standing right in the front? Tickets are $20, doors at 8 p.m.. Unfortunately, it is 21 and up, so those of you younger fans may have to content yourselves with Minus the Bear, These Arms Are Snakes and Headphones over at Neumo's. It's a tough choice, but no matter which show you attend, you're sure to enjoy yourself.
