I'm Stefush, from Seattle, WA and I wanna know what Louisville, KY is like as a town. I'd like to come visit some time (still have to make it to Austin, TX first, tho').  Any local flavor would be appreciated, as in what local beer is good, record stores, etc.

Grant Lee Buffalo? Magnolia Electric Co.? Beachwood Sparks? Mark Lanegan....?

When I went to visit Louisville, I was told by the hotel people and taxi drivers to visit 4th Street Live! I don't recommend that.  We had a lot of fun on Bardstown/Baxter road.  There're lots of fun shops there, and a really wicked guitar store.  Ear X-Tacy is a popular choice for records.  Is there a Louisville beer?  Personally, I'd go with bourbon.  ;)

There are a lot of people from that town here who can give you more specific funspots.

austin rules so hard.  ;)

Stefush

Oh yeah? Why, why does Austin rule so hard? Okay, so Explosions in the Sky are from there. That's one good thing. And Shiner Bock's an okay beer, so that's two. But I can only sit around my house here in the Northwest listening to EintheS and drinking Shiners.  There has to be more, dammit! There has to be!

hahaha. ok, how bout amazing people, great music everywhere you go and leslie the tranvestite that always runs for mayor.  :D

Stefush

Oh, okay. You've got me there with the whole civic-minded transgendered citizenry.  Most of our trannies here in the NW are too busy putting on cabarets and gothpunk deejay sets to run for anything.  Sure, it's sexy and all, but what can they do about traffic congestion and the homeless problem?

What we need in Seattle is someone post-op who CARES, dammit. Who will put on a nice pantsuit and get things done!

Cool article.  I had not seen that one before.  Being from the Louisville area, I can tell you that I agree with them about Lynn's, Ear X-tacy, and Ramsi's without a doubt.  If you can, check these places out.  Expect a wait almost anytime at Lynn's, but they do have a small gift shop with quirky gift items to check out.  Ramsi's also has a terrific jerk chicken sandwich that is more like a spicy BBQ chicken sandwich.

If you don't particularly like Bourbon, we do have some pretty good local beer offerings also.

Bluegrass Brewing Company http://www.bbcbrew.com/ is very good.  They also have a joint venture with a local restaurant that is located mere yards from the Palace.  Some of us will likely be there prior to the show.

If you have time to venture across the Ohio there is an outstanding Pub in New Albany, IN called Rich-O's Publican House http://www.richos.com/ that has a MASSIVE beer list including offerings from the local New Albanian Brewing Company.  Roger Baylor, the guy who runs this place, is a beer scholar.  I highly recommend the 10-15 minute drive.

I can't really recommend local hotels as I have not stayed in any, but near the Palace Theater we have a few.

The Brown Hotel http://www.brownhotel.com/ where portions of 'Elizabethtown' were filmed.  The Seelbach Hotel http://www.seelbachhilton.com/.  A Brand new Marriott Hotel has just opened recently in downtown alsohttp://marriott.com/property/propertypage.mi?marshaCode=SDFLM.  If these options are found pricey, try outside of the downtown area.  There are also several options just across the bridge from downtown in Southern Indiana.  There is a Ramada http://www.ramada.com/Ramada/control/Booking/property_info?propertyId=00887&brandInfo=RA, a Fairfield Inn http://marriott.com/property/propertypage.mi?marshaCode=SDFJF, and a couple of Holiday Inns fairly close http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/mapsearchresults?mapSearchResults=mapSearchResults&_requestid=551929.

I also agree with who ever mentioned that 4th Street Live wasn't the best place in Louisville to hang out also.  They have chain restaurants and chain bars which are OK, but you won't learn anything special about Louisville there.  Bardstown Rd, location of The Outlook Inn, Ramsi's, and Ear X-tacy (all mentioned in the MMJ Guide) are located on Bardstown Rd.  The only downside to Bardstown Rd is that it can sometimes be hard to find ample parking.

My god, I'm leaving right now!  Awesome job getting me up to speed (with links no less).  You're too cool.

Good work there tdan.  I guess the Cliff's Notes version of where to hang out in Louisville is that there are literally miles of bars/coffeeshops/music/restaurants/cool shops along Bardstown Road (which starts out as Baxter Avenue), southeast of downtown.  Hope that helps.

Ive got an EVIL plan babe

I've been an  MMJ fan for years, but my first show was this past weekend in Indy.  I took an MMJ newbie and he loved it as well.  We both agreed that we need to make it to the Palace on Nov. 23rd.  I was wondering if they leave the seats in on the floor at the Palace for concerts?  Is that lame?  When I went to buy tickets at ticketmaster the best available was row M.  I think it might drive me crazy to be stuck in a seat away from the stage for the entire concert.  What do you all think?  Am I just picky?
Just cause it starts off slow babe, doesn't mean I  don't have evil urges.

lilhales

I've seen MMJ twice, once last spring at bonarroo and once back in Nashville this past October 8th.  I can't wait to make that drive from Bowling Green, KY to see one of the best live performances of our time.  We got tickets back in Row FF at the Orchestra section which is kinda far back.  So I'm wondering if anybody has seen anyother concerts there at the Palace?

It's definitely on my brain.  Ach.

No worries all you out-a-towners, the Palace is a great venue to see a band, seats and all.  The acoustics are perfect from anywhere you sit and is small enough so that there's really not a bad seat in the house...as if they'll be used much anyways.  And come on, if Alison Krauss chose The Palace to record her live DVD at, then it's GOT to be legit, right?!  You'll be blown away by it's great looks, too.  Especially the ceiling, you'll see.  And the bar in the back is big/long enough to handle the large liquor drinking MMJ crowds, as well as the perfect place to hang out before the show (Krunk Unit II/Free Crack Fest?).
Furthermore, this is the first time MMJ will headline there (3rd time playing it I believe...Etown and Wilco the others?) and with VHS or Beta opening, 11-23-2005 promises to be a special night filled with greatness that will be reminisced by avid MMJ fans, potentially like yourselves, for years to come.  Being a Louisvillian and having seen them at least a dozen times since 2000, I must say that this show has generated a buzz unlike any other (with Lebowski Fest a close second).  So come one and come all, let's fill this place up, enjoy this unprecedented show with your fellow "posters"...and cross our fingers they throw in some special treats, costumes, pyrotechnics...and old classics like Phone Went West and Strangulation!  Okay, there's my three pesos.  Just tired of reading all this wishywashyness going on here about whether or not to come.  Get your asses down here or else you'll be kicking yourself in the culo for years to come if you don't.  Now check out how I passed time while watching the Sox sweep the 'Stros...

Right on johnbky, you nailed it my man.  It's going be epic.

Holy Crap!!!  That is the most hilarious thing I've ever seen.

My mind cannot fathom how much ass this show is going to kick.  After Bogart's last night MMJ has solidified their position in my mind as the best live band . . . EVER.
