Have you listened to the Dondante from the Northwestern U. show?   It has a totally different intro with more sax.  Really cool version.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

Don Dante is to emotional to play night in and night out.  I like the fact that they are takeing a break from it with Pearl  Jam.  You know the entire audience would talk through it anyway and that JUST WILL NOT DO.  Your attention has to already be completly wrapped before the solo kicks in.  I have experienced The Don Dante from right in front of Jim's guitar on more than one occasion and I have truly been blessed.  For those of you that have not witnessed.......FEEL FREE TO HATE ME.  ;)

Finest Dondantes of all time:

6/7/05- Cats Cradle, Carrboro
10/26/05- Bogart's, Cincinnati
Austin City Limits
11/18/05- Dallas

The new version is cool, but it doesn't work as well as the old one--the old one is scarier, more haunting, with how bare bones it is. Again, cool, but not as good. The drumming is different, not as spooky. I'm not gonna hate on this--it's AMAZING, but i don't like it as much as the old one. Who knows, maybe it'll grow on me. But seeing Dondante in person was one of the most intense experiences of my life.

It's like a religious experience. Feeling him build to an unbelieveable tension before it explodes with "You had me worried", then feeling him pour all of his guts into the solo...wow

The solo releases the build up in the song mabey better than any other song ever made.  It's a good example of why solos were invented.  Some people play solos because it needs a solo section Don Dante plays a solo because something needs to be let out at that point and words just aren't going to cut it................and it's gut wrenching and BEAUTIFUL.  Truly something to behold.

It's too bad the sound at the NU show isn't great.  It's not terrrible, but like sweatboard said, everyone is always talking over idondante at the beggining.  I love whenever you hear a crowd recording of dondante, everyone is yapping at the beginning when the sound is soft, but when it comes back to soft at the end of the song everyone has shut the fuck up because their jaws are scrapping the floor!  I would love to hear this new version with a little better sound.

See, i can't agree with this! It's more majestic, true, but it's lost a lot of its ominousness (yes, that is a word, because i say so). Again, no doubt the new version is incredible. But the thing that struck me so much about the old Dondante is how barebones it is until "you had me worried," it adds this otherworldly, spooky element that is no longer present in the same way...
It's good, fuckin' AMAZING to be exact, but it's not the old one...

If I had to pick one version it would still be the old version because of its ominousness! :)  However, isn't it just sweet that we are having this argument.  The fact that they continue to explore songs is great.  Even one that is only a year old or so...  I am looking forward to some shows with longer sets becuase I would like to see how the new lineup might explore some of the old catelog.
