Having spent the past few weeks filling the opening slot for Pearl Jam, this would be the band's first festival gig of the season, before also appearing at Bonnaroo and High Sierra. With a presence that commands the audience's attention, Jim James bounded about the stage wailing on his instrument as his hair flung about his bearded face. Creeping into their set with their opening tracks from 2001's At Dawn, Jacket showcased compelling vocal abilities with "Low Down." Drawing from the band's acclaimed 2005 album Z, they performed excellent versions of "Off the Record," What a Wonderful Man," and "Wordless Chorus." Seen sprinting up the muddy slope to the concert field, Grace Potter found her way to the front and joined the audience for one of the most impressive rock 'n roll shows of the weekend.

What an awesome show!  I officially declare this THE best version of Don Dante... until I hear the Boston Pops  version.

First off, the crowd was surprisingly small.... way too small for MMJ, plus there was a lot of hating by other people... usually the jam band audience is very open to MMJ, but then again the Mule is more shall we say "hardcore jam"
...And Some Are Angels...

COCHESE

give that crowd about 10 years to get what MMJ does. They'll all say they love'm.

just listened to the show--IT'S THE OLD DONDANTE!!!! Good to have it back!!! New one is amazing, but nothing can touch the classic Dondante

I was tamed by rock and roll
I was maimed by rock and roll
Got my name from rock and roll"

what exactly is the difference between the old and new dondante's?
The river is moving. The blackbird must be flying.

Listen to the one from Chicago in April. You'll hear.
New one is more majestic. Old one puts the fear of god into your heart and causes complete and utter musical shock.

are we talkign mainly about the solo after the chorus and the way it gets treated? where the old one is more spastic and makes everything inside you want to just turn inside out and explode? the new one gave me the same thing, if i remember correctly. i just remember being even more blown away by thed solo at the rites of spring. maybe it wasn't as spastic though.

is that the kind of difference though?

I'm talking about the way it's completely reworked up until the solo before "you had me worried"--longer, more complex, less eerie intro, all that sax...

i don't hear any major changes, maybe if you could pinpoint which parts have changed the most?

EDIT: this particular ending solo kicks my ass and does remind me of when i first heard don dante last May at the WXPN show.

only downside was carl's sax wasn't working too well and he was definitely not happy about it. He did get it working by the end and i hardly even noticed cuz i was too blown away by this new song performed 10 feet in front of me.

So is this what you're referring you when you say old....like kind of a vauge but more personal difference? or.....

The "old" version is more spare - simpler drum part, no soloing before the vox come in or between verses.  I feel like that simplicity gives the vox & lyrics more emphasis, and gives the song more power.

It really sucks you in and makes you pay attention, so that when "You Had Me Worried" hits, it hits HARD.  I get goosebumps every time.  Seriously.  This song is a masterpiece.

The "new" version (the Northwestern U. version) is still beautiful, but I don't think it's as powerful.  I think it would probably be received better than the "old" version would at shows where the audience is not really there for MMJ.  I can imagine folks who haven't been converted to MMJ yet talking all through the old, quieter version, and maybe the new version was meant to keep their attention.

oh shit ok, i listened to the NorthWestern U version and I understand now. that tower theater version is still my favorite, only because i was there for one of the first times it was ever played live

It is the old Dondante but different.  Subtle, but different and I'm not sure but I challenge anyone to find one longer.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.
