There is a couple of more still processing.
ENJOY!!

OMG, you must have been standing next to the excessivley HANDS-ON drunk fraternity guys. Everyone pretty much assumed they were going to make out with each other at some point during the show.

And if they were some of your friends, I apologize in advance. Well sort of. No I don't.

And lastly, I don't know much about tapers or taping, but the Austin show is going to sound beautiful due to the same reasons that made this show not as loud for the crowd.

So I really look forward to those. I did see one camera set-up on the stair case leading to the VIP deck.

(At least have the guts to leave your post up, after all it's only the internet)

Stubbs was their best 'effort'[/b] (playing, humor, energy, setlist) out of the three shows that I attended, and that is just one fan's subjective opinion.

Feel free to insert whatever 'un-demeaning' word that you would prefer because I think we are both fans and greatly appreciate what they do.

Yeah I was a few people down from them. Not friends of mine. Not the type of people I would associate with. It was loud on the VIP deck so I couldnt hear them. We had our own speakers up there.

katehsmc

Does anyone know if Thursday's Hopefully and I Think I'm Going to Hell were solo?

katehsmc

Could VIP people go back stage at all? The only time I've been VIP was at Stubbs for a band I didn't care about, so back stage wasn't all that exciting. But for MMJ, now that would be awesome!

my post was made out of anger and I removed it because it was silly and pointless. since it truly is only the internet, i have no reason to be aggressive.

I too was wondering about the benefits of the VIP deck...

Well I was told that the only amenities for the MMJ show were strictly limited to the deck. No back stage. That was the first time I have been up there. Soooo i dont know if that answers you guys' questions. I did eat about an hour before the show and Jim was in there getting some food. I spoke to him. His speaking voice is totally different from his singing voice. It kind of threw me off.

Hi everyone,

For some reason Stubbs wasn't the greatest venue for a MMJ show.  I had few complaints.  One, is my wife is about 5'5" and she really couldn't see the show, so I felt real bad for her.  We stood on the stairs/bar on the right side of the venue.  We could see Patrick, Carl, and Tommy, but only so Jim when he would step away from the mic.  Wasn't the greatest standing area.  Second, the volume was really low.  I heard people talking all night and that has never happened at a MMJ show.  The show was really crowded too (sold out).  So I'm sure that didn't help the conversation level.

The band rocked though.  Really into it and seeing Jim jump around was awesome.  And Patrick!!!!  I told my wife and buddy (who is short too, lol)  that if I was in a band with Patrick as my drummer I would never run out of energy.  That guy gives his all.  The strobe light during Run Thru was the coolest thing I've ever seen.

To sum up the "Stubbs" show.  Excellent show/Bad venue.   Hope to see them again at La Zona Rosa or even San Antonio!! ;D

for the people complaining about the venue i dont get it

if you have a height problem get there earlier and find a good spot.. a lot of people did that

for the noise.. my ears are honestly still ringing/numb

if you stand off to the side yeah you are going to get the conversations and not the full effect of the music-- that will hold true with any band at any venue

i thought the venue was great because it provided a place for 2 types of fans to see the band

all of the big fans made it to the front and there was no talking just singing and it sounded perfect

againg thumbs up to Stubb's

For those of you complaining, it could be worse.....

Got into MMJ about 3 months ago.  Have been downloading stuff like crazy, bought the Okonokos DVD, etc.

Got tickets for the Stubb's show about a month ago and have been looking forward to my first MMJ show BIG TIME!

Wife and I went to Z'Tejas for dinner b4 the show.  Mistake #1 - vodka martini for the 1st drink at dinner.  I think you can see where this is headed.

Anyway, I'm fine going into Stubb's....mistake #2 - oilcan Foster's became the bev of choice for the evening.

Secured a good spot at about 7:15.  A couple (or few?  :-[)Fosters later, I'm feelin' good and enjoying Wax Fang.  I remember MMJ coming on and playing OBH.  My next memory is my wife dragging my idiotic drunk rear out of there while "Steam Engine" is being played during the encore.  I also remember sitting down outside and eating a hot dog b4 we caught a cab back to the hotel.

I realize I was an idiot and I deserve it, but I can't even explain how depressed/upset I am.  Next MMJ concert will be alcohol free, and it can't come soon enough!  I just hope they get back to South/Central Texas SOON!

The one positive...my wife didn't really care that much about going to this concert.  Just going because I wanted to.  Yesterday she asks me all sorts of questions about MMJ and asks me to burn some CDs of their stuff for her car.  So at least she became a fan.

And to anyone I might have offended with my probable boorish behavior, I sincerley apologize.

BH

Bosch?   Is that you?

(Sorry, I have a friend who does this exact thing on a regular basis.  I have to tell him about shows he went to all the time.)

Next time this happens to you, get up, go as close to the stage as possible, and start head banging with the boys.  Works everytime.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

AN ETHEREAL EVENING WITH MY MORNING JACKET

For shows as egregiously sold out as Saturday night's My Morning Jacket gig at Stubb's, the best seat in the house is reserved for Orion, several hundred million miles straight up. Of course, the constellation usually has the best seat for pretty much anything that happens in the Northern Hemisphere, at least between late fall and spring.

But it seemed fitting that this giant hunter made of stars should be such a luminous presence at an MMJ show. Songwriter Jim James is a mountain-man lookalike with a guitar hero's chops, a frontman's charisma and the banter of a guy who reads too much. He shouted out a meteor shower and yakked about the story of alternative medicine doctor Masuru Emoto's "messages from water" experiments in between explosive rock rambles — it was corny, heartfelt and weirdly appropriate.

Opening with the spiraling "One Big Holiday," MMJ stormed through its catalog, most recently represented in record shops by the double live CD "Okokonos." "Stormed" is the operative word here. Thanks to MMJ's knowing combo of jump-around indie rock energy and mutant Southern-rock riffometry, MMJ has managed to triangulate a remarkable vector between indie rock hipsters, jam band devotees and beefy frat guys who wear a lot of Abercrombie and Fitch shirts. This made for a show that required a few songs to get moving, a reggae-tinged tune ("Off the Record") and some utterly spectacular guitar histrionics. They're also showmen enough to close with "Mahgeetah" and "Anytime," which, both on "Okokonos" and here, fulfill every expansive, spacey promise their music's ever made. Orion would be proud.

PJ, just to say again. I am almost 6 foot and we were about 40ft back left of center, not on the sides, and it was not loud enough. (I could pretty much see alright at 6ft, but anyone shorter, they may have problems.)

I can hawk (sp?) a lugie (sp?) almost 20ft, so 40-50ft is nothing, and it was not loud enough, period. The space is probably over a 1000 ft. deep. If you have to be within 20ft to get the full experience, then something is not right.

And I'm not really saying this becuase I had a bad experience. It was my 3rd show in three days. Whatever I got would have been icing on the cake.

But I think MMJ missed out on a great opportunity to convert many casual fans into diehard MMJ lovers. The place was packed and they gave an excellent performance. It just didn't wow as many persons as it should have.
