Everybody got a sweet show at the Alabama Theater. All of the performances were good (or great), the crowd (for the most part) was very respectful and at times listening to the show was as eerily quiet. I do wish that the drunk skanks would stop trying to sing along with Jim, though - for fuck's sake, we came to hear Jim James sing.

I can't recall the entire setlist in order, but the following was played... The songs were a mix between acoustic guitar and omnichord.

Bermuda Highway
The Bear
I Will Be There When You Die
What A Wonderful Man
At Dawn
Anytime
It Beats For You
Masterplan

Covers

Sam Cooke - That's Heaven To Me
Jimmie Rodgers(?) - Nobody Knows But Me
Jimmie Rodgers(?) - Mississippi River Blues** (played on his soundcheck)

--- and that's 2 real 4 u.

drunk skanks singing along....here's hoping they all get in one big ole "skank wagon" and pedal their fat asses to Athens
the fruit bats love makin' made all the kids cry

thanks for the review, Brad.  Sounds like a great show.  I love to see some new covers played.  I hope this one pops up sometime soon!

Angry Ewok

It was recorded, so I'm sure we'll be getting that soon...

I saw a guy with a handheld video, who taped the entire set - maybe that'll be tossed online soon... Fox 6 may have taped some of it, not sure... and I'd be shocked if Reg didn't have it recorded for his show/website.

And as far as the skanks go... Athens can have them. To me, it's grossly disrespectful to shout/etc during a performance - especially an acoustic one. But they were in the minority last night, most of the crowd was awesome - the sound guys did a great job, Alabama Theater was one of the best sounding I've been to.

Did the Omnichord get on your nerves at any point?

A few more notes:

Tonite I Want to Celebrate was the opener (on omnichord as usual).  The other two he played on the omni were Wonderful Man and Anytime.  Interesting to hear them get that treatment (not sure if he's done them on the omnichord before--I haven't heard it).

There was a Hopefully, a Golden and a Gideon in there somewhere.

At Dawn was the encore.

When You Die was flawless.

I hope a recording gets out.  I didn't hear anybody singing along, but we were down pretty close.  Fingers crossed it's not on the recording if there an audience source.

there was a Gideon in there as well. the show sounded fantastic and the theater was truly incredible. reminded me of a smaller version of the Fox Theater here in Atlanta.

I was in the balcony and thankfully didn't hear anyone singing along either - very polite crowd from where I was sitting. Great meeting some of you folks last night!

jim james brought me to tears. that is the best he has ever sounded to me vocally though i have never seen him solo. i've seen mmj about 7 times now. the sound engineering was through the roof! he put his heart into that show and i always love the omnichord. fabu, fabu, fabu night all around. i am still keeping my fingers crossed on bonnaroo. thanks to reg for putting it all together and for $22.50!!!

Angry Ewok

While I prefer the guitar, the omnichord did not get on my nerves... I pretty much hated it back in June '05 when I first saw him play it. The band ended It's About Twilight Now, and then Jim got on the omnichord by his lonesome and played This Magic Moment... it just put a halt to the "rock the balls off" atmosphere.  BUT... for whatever reason I've come to enjoy seeing what he does with the omnichord. I'd like to see him experiment with the theramin, next.

:)

We were located on the 5th row, on the left hand side... The singing was pretty obnoxious, so I'm glad you guys didn't hear it. Don't get me wrong, I sing along, too, sometimes (never during acoustic) - but the people I'm talking about were really off with their timing... it was like Jim's echo had taken on the sound of an intoxicated valley girl.

Reg seemed like an awesome guy - we weren't able to go to the speakeasy to hang out with everyone, did any of you guys go there after the show?

Angry Ewok

Oh, and by the way... Jim did a pretty sweet (goofy) peg-leg style dance while on the omnichord.

I went to the Speakeasy and hung out for a couple hours - not a lot going on there, guess I left too early...

How was Patty Griffin's set? She does Sam Cooke covers on occasion as well (Get Yourself Another Fool). Did Jim and Patty interact at all?

Sweet!  A couple new covers!  And The Bear makes an appearance!
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

was Tracy at this show?

Quotewas Tracy at this show?

we were a last second no show due to the icey roads. Couldn't afford to throw down on a hotel room if the roads were bad, so, we decided to stay in Nashville. The roads around our house were a solid sheet of ice by 9 pm so seems like the right call was made, but...

I think back in "the day" I would have said fuck it. But, alas, I stayed home and watched the slam dunk competition and Carolina beat BC.

(I can't stand to think about missing I Will Be There When You Die) :'(

Angry Ewok

Quotemeg?

Meg wasn't able to, unfortunately. We had an open seat for her, too.

:'(

Patty Griffin was awesome. I don't know any of her songs, so I won't bother trying to sound off on how her set was... but I know for sure she played Burgundy Shoes. Beautiful voice...

Patty and Jim didn't collaborate, though.

Here are some photos I took from the Dress Circle. All four Acts are included.

thanks for the notes and review of the show!  i would love to hear the omnichord version of anytime.  i can't even imagine it. sounds like jim played a pretty long set.
