Songs That Need Improvement Live

The DARK

Let's face it, MMJ puts on stunning shows, but there are some songs that could use a little improvement when played live. Here are mine:

1. Gideon- The biggest one. Carl's guitar sounds sloppy, and the synth strings are just plain cheesy.

2. What A Wonderful Man- Not that it's truly bad, but it's too tight. They need an extended jam on this like on Dondante.

3. How Do You Know?- I'm sorry, I just don't like it that much... I'm certain it's just a matter of preference.

Hmmm....

I'm gonna disagree with ya on "Gideon". I much prefer the OKONOKOS version over the Z version. There's a rawness to it that is unbelievable. It's a little too polished on Z.

The DARK

Don't like the Okonokos version. I love the Letterman version, though.

I'm sorry, but don't touch Gideon. Sounds great live.

But one of my only complaints about MMJ is that they don't experiment more with their live stuff. It pretty much stays the same unless it is a set or on core closer.

I'll think more about this.

I do agree that I'd like to see a longer WAWM.

shhhh... yes, you do like it. in fact, you love it. you just don't know it yet.

the only song i've heard that maybe needs improvement is "Masterplan"...i've heard them rock the sh*t out of it at times but at others it just doesn't measure up to their standards.

anyway...i feel like a blasphemer now!

must repent!
If you're lucky, MMJ will fill the void you didn't even know you ever had. If you're luckier, you'll get to see them live.

Wordless Chorus doesn't necessarily need improvement, just change.  How about every band member does harmony instead of just the Keyboard+Jim?

The transition from studio to live and vice-versa is a very easy one for My Morning Jacket to make. Sometimes, however, they can't adequately recreate the sound they used in the studio just because they don't have the instrumentation. I think Dancefloors sans horns would sound pretty barren, although I've never heard it done like that. Unless they did it at Roo 06 and I forgot about it.

QuoteNo touching Gideon.
I whole-heartily agree.

I do agree with Gideon.  I still have a little trouble with the prerecorded intros.  Still like it and its a song I want in my set, but I think this song is a perfect studio tune and it sounds awesome on Z with some great speakers.  Guitar reminds me of U2 but that's besides the point.

WAWM I think is perfect the way it is, a tight 3- minute romp that gets me headbangin' early.

And I agree on HDYK?...enjoyable as a studio song, and fun to sing in the car, but I wouldn't include it on my wishlist for next Tuesday and Wednesday (so freakin' pumped!).

Freebird. They could do it better.

(when I hear someone talk about someone else's guitar playing being "sloppy" I have to take a deep breath and say it's OK. That's a pretty big insult IMO. And the cheesy parts? Why you want to come to a bands forum site and talk about their sloppy guitar play and cheesy parts baffles me)

good luck out there.

My fanaticism demands that I not participate in this thread, except to say that you guys who don't really like Gideon live are nuts.

I don't like the studio version of "How Do You Know?" or the acoustic version "Chills"
--- and that's 2 real 4 u.

peanut butter puddin surprise

the only one that comes to mind is "Touch Too Much", an AC/DC cover sung/screamed by Tommy.  The only time ever that was played live (to my knowledge) it was inspired, to be sure, by alcoholic beverages, and a less drunken version would have been nice, but not nearly as fun.  The awe struck, mostly seated crowd that night at Headliner's did NOT expect lil Jimmy James and co. to teabag their collective balls on them like that, but the cover, the crowd's reaction, and the overall drunken, smoky vibe that night were priceless moments etched forever in my brain.  So, in conclusion, it could use work, but I wouldn't change one frigging thing about it.  ;)

Sudden revelation...Wouldn't Lay Low sound AWESOME with horns?

i am waiting for the day Jim James has back up singers, like the supremes or someshit like that.

Lots of their songs scream SOUL, and with some more voices with it, there could be a sound that could be untouchable.

EX:
Lowdown - i love the album version because there is backing voices...something they dont do live.

Phone Went West - would have and even more lovely reagee feel to it if they had the wailers back up his vocals.

The Way That He Sings - Listen, and you can hear the backing vocals...mmm

Bermuda Highway - would be lovely with some japanees humming. dont ya think...

I mean the list could go on.  They Ran, Sooner, Where To Begin etc...

BACK UP SINGERS!!!!!

God damn those shaky knees.

DaFunkyPrecedent

As for the Horns on Lay Low....

I think one day My Morning Jacket will have a horn section live and go on tour with a group like Deerland.  Most of their songs would be fucking cool with horns.  Most songs in general are for that matter.

HORNS AND BACK UP SINGERS! MAKE IT BIGGER AND BIGGER!
