QuoteFeb (could be march or may) 2001 @ Headliner's Louisville, KY -

Underage & full of 100 proof E.L. Weller (fine Kentucky Bourbon    :o  )

aMD, Candyass, & I walk up to the side door - walk right in then the bouncer stops us.  Geutig's walking by just as the bouncer stops us - aMD hollers at him & the bouncer lets us in - the place wasn't crowded at all - maybe 100 people (probably less - thats been a few shots ago).

I remember the band walked out on stage in Celtics jerseys wearing rainbow clown wigs with little glowsticks in there mouths.  That was the first time I'd heard One Big Holiday & I remember getting completely lost in  War Begun  - it was me, the band, my bourbon & a pack camels - that's all that existed in my world in that moment in time

I cant remember the exact date - or I'd post the setlist.

aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh... memories!  That was a fun show.  Jim used to let me carry his guitar on stage so that I could get in to some of those shows underage.  Now it's hard to get him to answer an email.  things change, but they still kick ass when we get the chance to see them.  My first show was 9-23-99 Bellarmine Battle of the Bands.

did they win the battle of the bands?
If you're lucky, MMJ will fill the void you didn't even know you ever had. If you're luckier, you'll get to see them live.

My first Show
October 10, 2003
Slim's, SF, CA

They were supporting It Still Moves on this tour. We had a table up in the balcony at the back of Slim's for a lot of the show, and Tommy's sister was up there with some other family and/or friends. I didn't talk to her, but I could hear her talking to different people and telling them that it was HER brother up there rocking! She was really proud!

I don't remember the setlist, and haven't been able to find it. I actually went with a friend who is in the (CA prop. 215 legalized) "medicine" business, so we LOADED. Come to think of it, that was one of the last times I indulged.

I do remember rocking so hard though, and afterwards wanting to tell everyone I knew about an album that they had to listen to...
"I'm able to sing because I'm able to fly, son. You heard me right..."

Nope.  MSD, a shitty (sorry if I'm offending any locals) hardcore band won.  Helgeson Story, Aaron Todovich's band after Month of Sundays was second, and I think the Jacket finished third.

Pretty certain that this was the Derby night show on May 5, 2001.  The band was wearing Trinity High School Shamrocks uniforms, tube socks included.  Johnny Quaid set his guitar on fire, the band played Van Halen's Jump and Journey's Don't Stop Believin' and just all around led a righteously good time for all.

Will Russell (of Lebowskifest) testified to this epic performance and it is archived on Ger's web site at:
http://www.magnix.demon.nl/mmj/archive/setlists/010505.htm

I've got pix somewhere at home if you want to see the band at their most ridiculously goofy greatness. Oh, and Lil Billy made an appearance at that show!

May 21, 2004 - The Metro Chicago

We walked in and saw maybe a song and a half of M Ward's. I thought it sounded just fine - but I was really excited for MMJ. This was the tour where Jim was wearing the jacket with the parrot....so they walk out, didn't even play a note and I thought MY GOD, this is gonna be something to remember. The set list is here:

One Big Holiday / O Is The One That Is Real / Dancefloors / How Do You Know / It Beats 4 U / Death Is The Easy Way / Xmas Curtain / The Way That He Sings / Lowdown / Come Closer / Strangulation / Masterplan / Steam Engine / Run Thru / Cobra / Golden / Mahgeetah

I recall just feeling like I was in a trance. I do rememberer How Do You Know sticking in my head for days afterward!  It's rare that you see a band for the first time and you are completely under their spell. All of the people I went with felt the same way. Pure magic.

Funny after story - there was a meet & greet afterward in the record shop next door to the metro. I was in line and realized that I needed something for them to sign so I pulled a poster off the pole and walked up.  They were standing behind the counter and were raised up a bit. Well, the first guy in line was Patrick and he hadn't put his hair back but JJ had. I thought when I walked up that I was talking to Jim James - and he knew it! (Can't remember exactly what I said) and then next in line was Jim - so he signs it says thanks for coming and just has the hugest smirk on his face. When I looked at my poster afterward, I realized what I had done. (Well, that and my friends were telling me that I had it all wrong) I just laughed my ass off. Of course it was embarrassing but a moment to remember - esp when I looked back and they had these huge shit-eating grins on their faces.  :-[ :-[

But seein you feels good, and its always understood.
That anything much sweeter would make me die.

Slim's, SF, CA

My first show too! I had just bought ISM and was really getting into it. I was blown away by their music when I listened with headphones, and just thought they would be a spectacular live band. Of course they were. I'm glad I got the chance to see them at Slims, because it's a smaller venue and I don't think I'll get the chance to see them at a venue like that again.

Things that I remember most:
-Patrick Park opened. He was excellent!

-I saw Jim off to the side of the crowd. I was surprised that I recognized him because I had only seen 1 picture of the band. I saw him up close because he walked through the crowd directly in front of me twice. Nobody bothered him, which I would guess wouldn't be the case now.

-Some guy in the audience shouting "Show us your faces"

-A couple girls standing near me were in love with Johnny Quaid. When the band left the stage so Jim could do a couple solo songs, the girls went off to the back of the club to scout out cute guys. However as soon as they saw Johnny coming back on stage they started shoving their way back up by me. Their urgency to be near him was hilarious. It was like the end of days would come if they didn't close the gap. I guess they must have been sad when he left.

I don't remember the set list either. I think is was mostly songs from ISM. I was very impressed by them that night, and I know many more fans were too. I find it really exciting to see how the live performances have evolved since then. The lighting is amazing and beautifully done. Their stage presence is incredible now. I love that they involve their fans in the shows with themes and costumes. What fan doesn't love that stuff!

::) I remember reading about MMJ in Maxim, 2003, Fall issue. In Chapel Hill NC, there is a club, they played sometime in November. Maybe 2-300 folks maybe. I leaned against the stage the whole show. Have seen them 5 times since, the last at The Orange Peel in Asheville NC. They are so good, I do hope to see them in the Palace like theater that is Radio City. PS-Think it will get formally recorded???

Dudley

I had heard of them in early 2006 on a local really shitty radio station. had a chance too see them with pearl jam at the palace but still hadn't heard them and thought they were a screamo band or something lol. Fortunetly for me i attended bonnaroo that year. did some research in weeks prior and knew i couldn't miss that show. ate some jellies and headed for centeroo. in 06' we were in the boonies ( Monntimer Duke) so it took us 45-an hour to walk our lazy asses up there. i arrive early so i could see the lights in the tent and was soooooo blown away!! i will never g forgot the feeling shared with many as they played "when you wish upon a star" as in intro music. Did the same for Cleveland that year and Lolla last. Great memories.

ylwdog

Have been listening for a couple of years but got the live hook at a very unique show at Symphony Hall, Boston MA 6/22/2006.

Figured RCMH would be an appropriate follow up!

Oh yeah....forgot about 12/2/06 avalon show because these dudes next to me wouldn't STFU and totally killed the vibe form me. Then I listen to the archive download and I can still hear dudes yapping it up during the show. Yeah...place was packed and couldn't really escape to another spot.

Hollow

Bonnaroo 2003 was my first show too.  I had read about their following in Belgium and Holland and had heard Cobra so my interest was piqued.  I wandered over to their tent and was glad I did.

golden_lion2012

my first show will be the Radio City one in June ;D
its my high school graduated gift from my parents, they know MMJ is pretty much the reason i started playing guitar...i dont know if i can wait 5 months. this show is gonna kick prom's ass 8-)

That's funny, I remember that now. They were heads down rocking for all of the first part of the show, and not until OBH did Jim emerge from behind his hair and growl at the audience. They were locked in!!!

It sounds like you're heading out for the RCMH show also! What day are you planning on flying out?

I will be there! I haven't booked anything yet so I'm not sure what day I'll be leaving. I think I'll be leaving from SFO though. I'm planning on spending a few days in NY. I've been there once before, but only for two days. There is so much to see and there is a lot of stuff I didn't do the first time around. I can't wait.

Hi, my name is Chet and i'm an addict...

it was Bonnaroo 2003.

A tractor beam of sound drew me this big white tent where they were blasting Magheetah.  Some dude that looked like Cousin It was screaming into the mic...i just haven't been the same since.
So soon after payday, know it seemed a shame!

Saturday, May 27, 2006. Tweeter Center, Camden, NJ, opening for Pearl Jam. I had just gotten into MMJ at the time, and were in fact more excited to see them than Pearl Jam, but both bands put on an amazing show that night. I then saw them on December 1, 2006 at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia. Probably one of the best concerts that I've been to in my entire life. Actually, the Dec. 1 show is on Archive, and I'm pretty sure that's me yelling "The Way That He Sings" right before "The Way That He Sings". Check it out.
