I really can not say enough how amazing and special this was. The venue is an old church that has been transformed into a performance venue. It's pretty small with nice high ceilings and a beautiful stone background behind the band. There is also a balcony where some VIPs were. Like I said, it's small and held 200 people at most. I was lucky to get in at the front of the line and was front row. It was so cool to watch the band that close in such an intimate setting.
The show was incredible. They really put on a great show for this taping. A lot of times bands can look nervous or stiff for a tv appearance, but not MMJ. They were as amazing as ever. It was really quiet and you could hear them counting off the songs and everything. It was really cool. The best was that right before the start Patrick says "Ready fuckers!?!" before launching into the gigantic drum intro of Evil Urges. Let me say it was the perfect opening song and imagine it will be the staple opener of the next tour.
The opening three songs were unbelieveable. They were so full of energy. At one point Jim almost launched right off the stage. I thought I was going to have to catch him.
The new songs sound amazing. Truly amazing. Often when a band plays new songs they can sound tenative, but it sounds like they have been playing these songs for years. They had all the energy and confidence that any of the old ones had. I have to say that Smokin' was the highlight for me. I really believe this will be the favourite on the album. It is really stunning. But, all of the new songs are fantastic. Highly Suspicious is ridiculous. I'm really not sure about it at all. The breakdown is great, the verses are bizzare. I thought seeing it live would win me over, but it didnt'. However, the others are amazing. Seems to be that this record is a completely natural progression from the last one. They fit really nicely beside songs from Z.
Some other highlights were Jim explaining how in the teachings of Zen you have to look on the world as if its the first time, but sometimes your forced to. He also talked about the hole in the ceiling being a "soul hole" and sucks the souls of people who come there. During One Big Holiday he jumped off the stage and soloed right with us. Then he did a big power slide on his knees on the floor. It was so great. He also sang Wordless with a towel on his head.
All in all, it was really an amazing night. This is getting super long, so I'll stop there. I'm sure more will come back to me.
Look for it when it airs, it's going to be an amazing show.

Excellent review!!! Thanks very much for posting Johnboy  :)
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

I forgot to say how great the vocals were last night. They sounded a little shaky at points during the NPR webcast, but last night they were bang on. Totally brought their A Game. The harmonies were outstanding. Carl and Bo did a great, great job and Jim was at his finest.

Also, I was surprised to see how little the band interacts with eachother. Being that close you could really see the subtle things you miss in a bigger place. But the whole band just seems to be in their own world and just trusts the other members so much that they know what the other is going to do. It was very interesting to watch.

a fantastic show...i felt really lucky to see these guys in such a small venue with a great crowd. As always, Dondante and Gideon were steller, and the new tracks show improvement over SXSE! really into them and cannot wait for the album!

thoughts on releasing a recording of this show? not sure if there would be any issues.

Cheers,

Yv

Awesome review man!  Thanks for sharing!
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

Quote...before the start Patrick says "Ready fuckers!?!" before launching into the gigantic drum intro of Evil Urges.

That just made my day  :)

Thanks for the write-up of the show john boy...it's my favorite thing to read on this forum, a well reviewed show.

last night was one of the funnest nights in the history of nights in the world. :)

i had the pleasure of getting my FACE ROCKED OFF beside one sean murphy who was losing his mind beside me the whole time.

i also had the pleasure of meeting one jaimoe (finally), who unfortunately we lost each other after the show, and we will have to have drinks soon to talk about this amazing night of joy and pleasure.

patrick's new drums with the stars totally rule.

carl pulled out the pedal steel (a lot) AND the sax on what i think was a 45 minute version of don dante.

we yelled thrusting in your face about 60 times, to represent.

tom is now travelling with 48 bass guitars and three techs to keep hooking him up.  i'm pretty sure the band had to stay in a hostel because they have no more money left, but IT'S WORTH IT THE BASS SOUNDS CRUSH YOUR CHEST.

when jim jumped off the stage, let's just say it was indicative of how much fun was being had.

now really.  is there anything funner than watching bo grooving out behind those keys.  somebody get that guy a keytar so that he can dance around.

i wish toronto audiences were not so shy.  but that is ok.

i have no idea how long they played, but it seemed like a really long time, and i was so hot and sweaty from DANCING.

fave lines heard through the show:

"this next album is going to be retarded."

"babies will be made to this song."

i don't even know what to say about the new songs.  they kick ass with a serious vengeance.  some of them are so tender and lovely, and some just force your body to move you can't help it, and they're all pretty sexy.  i mean seriously, holy crap.

this was a very special night and i feel so glad that i got to be a part of it, and i only hope there are 17 close ups of my face in a constant state of rock and surprise and admiration and especially i hope somebody caught me screaming THRUSTING IN YOUR FACE alsdfija;lfjsdlfjasdl;fjasl;dfjasl;djfl;asdjflaskdjf;alsdjf

Great show last night. Thanks EC for getting me in! It was great meeting you finally... and NYC Sean too. I went to Betty's after the show and I told Sean where I was going so I guess you went somewhere else? Next time! Vicki actually sprained her foot at Betty's. It was still worth it.

I Have this but am not sure if its ok to post as its for an upcoming show...any thoughts? Not a great recording due to my location, but a decent enough one till the show is broadcast.

I was there last night as well, right down front. I have no words to describe how amazing it was...

Hadn't seen them since Bonnaroo 06' and it had been much to long.

again, AMAZING...

All the songs were great new and old.  From the new stuff, Smokin' From Shootin' was definitely a highlight. Old stuff, a what seemed to be greatly extended version of Off the Record was cool, and OBH was nice as always with Jim leaping off the stage into us, like some crazed axe wielding minister wishing for someone to lay hands on him.

a wonderful night.
