John Mayer definitely sold out...the problem is...we have a connotation with the term 'sold out' as being something bad.

As was already mentioned...JM has come out and said that he wrote sappy/poppy crap songs because he knew it would bring him money, bitches and fame....

He sold out UNDER HIS OWN will...which in no way is necessarily a bad thing.

Therefor he bought in.

I was at this show! I'll admit it.

I haven't posted on here in forever but felt the need to come forward and confirm this.

It was in Louisville (at Jillian's, bleh). Jim James opened with a solo set, and was obviously not the scheduled opener. I vaguely remember some announcement about him being a replacement. He handed out homemade burned CDs to the audience during the set and I have one. Whatever it must have felt like to open for John Mayer (who really wasn't that big at the time, I think he had maybe just had his first single on the radio) Jim James brought it and put on an authentic, true-to-his-style performance nonetheless.

I can top it ....

I just spent 25 years in Connecticut about 15 minutes from Mayer's parent's house .....

.... I used to see him play in local neighborhood taverns for free

He may be a commercial sell out making millions?

But Buddy motherfucking Guy called him his favorite guitarist

End of discussion
Thank you .... You've been a lovely audience ....I'll be here all week .... Try the veal!

I saw a JM show and right before he played Your Body is a Wonderland (which I cannot stand) he said, "This song meant something to me until every guy used the line to pick up a girl and it became an instant catch phrase" i thought that it was an interesting look into his song writting and he went up a couple notches in my book.  I don't listen to him much, but the guy can sing, and he can definitely write, and he sure as hell can play guitar!
Oh I'll never say I knew you, but my heart can't wait to meet you on the other side

Maybe Buddy Guy is just out of loop with current music.

He can be out of touch with current music and still know the guitar. I dont care if you dont like the singles, you cant deny his talent when people like BB King and Eric Clapton want to play with him.
Say friend, you got any more of that good sasparilla?

they're old though and other than jack white he's the only one trying to "bring back" the blues. or slip it in.  they just want a younger audience.  maybe not maybe they think he's awesome, but there's definitely much more creative guitar playing going on right now than john mayer.  i don't know I think the dude is lame his lameness makes him less sweet to me.  I know people who are amazingly talented, they're just not famous

I was at the 2002 Jillian's show in Louisville when Jim opened for John.  It was wack.  Average age of the audience was 15.  They collectively thought Jim was ridiculous, playing material far beyond their senses...or what MTV feeds them.  If only they really knew.

Several months before, I was in the crowd of 50 at Headliner's in Louisville, paying 10 bucks to see John Mayer solo before his first album was released.  He was timid and nervous, actually trying to put on a great show...and played impressive covers of Sting and Radiohead.

Fastforward a few more months (after the Jillians show), and I caught about 10 minutes of John's set at a street fest in Cincy before I had had enough of his cocky antics.  I quickly wandered over to the next stage to check out an up-and-coming surf rock group from Hawaii...Jack Johnson, who was playing at the same time.

John Mayer has sold his was out all the way "to the top."  Guitar skills aside, I side with character.  And that's something that Jim and the rest of MMJ will never lose.  Now can we please put a rest to this stupid John Mayer thread?
