I see the ad in WW for the Edgefield show is now listing the show not as an "evening with" but with an opener, John Callahan (you may recall him being referenced in the "mustache article" recently by JJ).  I'm soooo excited by this because I know John, and well, maybe he needs help carrying his equipment.  Plus, it is going to be superinteresting to see a quadraplegic opener!!! GO JOHN!!! ;D 8-) ;D 8-)

Don't mean to be rude but I am not excited about this descision. Maybe if it were the Black Keys, but I am sorry we are coming a long way for that show(and Seattle). This will affect set length for MMJ.

The Black Keys opening for MMJ at Red Rocks didn't affect set length, so hopefully this opener won't affect your show!
God sure baked a lot of fruitcake, baby.

on a tour of "evenings with" it's noteworthy when the band adds an opener!

thanks for the heads up, amy!

(i was secretly hoping it would be helio sequence, but whattdyagonnado?   ;D )

i'm just excited to see MMJ and people keep telling me the Edgefield is a great venue.

I just hope I can contain my excitement! :D

PS, I spoke to John the other day (the opening act) and he told me he was going on around 5:00 pm and only playing for 30 minutes.  Plenty of time for everybody to play!! Get there early everybody and check him out - he's a cool dude!!

I used to think that way too......until it dawned on me that the opening acts to band you love, are typically loved by the headliner.  My Morning Jacket got their chances to open for some great bands, which propelled their career.

Skipping an opening act says "I don't trust MMJs taste in music".

I love tailgating as much as anyone, but not enough anymore to go in late.  And you'll likely miss out on the poster too.

Erik26

It's not that I don't trust their taste in music. I am not there for anything but MMJ. I don't really care how close I get because I have front row centre tickets for Seattle. I can't even get my tickets until 5:30 on top of it. I am also coming from Calgary, Alberta. About 13 hours of driving to get there. I will say this, had it been the Keys again I would have made the extra effort to be there.

Did anyone see a show when they had Saul Williams open on the ISM tour? Absolute garbage.

Erik26

exactly, bands have shitty openers all the time. Not to say that this guy is shitty.

BTW, it occurred to me today that Calexico is playing at the Ballroom the same night as MMJ is playing the earlybird special at Edgefield.  I'm just sayin it might be worth putting a glass up to the wall... ;)

That makes more sense...thought you were sticking it to John saying "I'll be there after 5:30" my bad....  Just saying the days of record execs picking shitty openers for bands are over.  From my experience the last few years, kicka$$ bands today pick kicka$$ bands to tour and hang with (for the most part)
