So, I've been doing the math.  Their are quite a few flight options from the midwest to Europe for late October / Early Nov.

The rooms in NYC + tickets + travel from KY on New Years Eve would be quite similar.

Amsterdam v. New York?
New Years Eve vs. 2 days after Halloween?

Can only afford one or the other.

Thoughts?  Concerns?

j_rud

New Years, and its not even close. You have to ask yourself why you are picking Amsterdam out of all the European shows. Im guessing whats so attractive about it can be found right here at home, of course to be enjoyed more discreetly. New Years is going to be a one of a kind show, you dont pass that up.
Say friend, you got any more of that good sasparilla?

Actually--from reading the setlists and hearing the sets from various Amsterdam shows, it's clear that the boys put on a very good show in that city.

I say if you'd be happy sitting at home on NYE eating Ramen in exchange for seeing them in Amsterdam, in the Fall, it might be something to seriously consider.

The only downfall is that the set in Amsterdam will most likely be much shorter than the NYE set. So, technically there would be more MMJ bang for your buck here in the States.

Seriously?  NYC or Amsterdam?

I'd go to Amsterdam in a heartbeat!

There's way more fun to be had in Amsterdam, plus they'll play a lot of Tennessee Fire songs for the locals.

Amsterdam.

They are playing a venue that holds an exponentially smaller crowd. I saw the Black Crowes at the Paradiso and it was amazing. It's an old church that has been converted into a club. Beautiful stained glass behind the band, its other worldly. Not to mention what you are allowed to do while watching the band.
NYE in general sucks especially in NYC. I just moved from NYC this year I lived in the city for about eight years and tried to get out of town for NYE every year. Now the dilemma is MMJ at MSG on NYE. Granted this will be epic but so will the Paradiso! If I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to choose between the two, THE DAM would win for sure.

NYE in NYC, without question

Contrary to popular belief unless you are specifically going to Amsrerdam for the "coffee" shops or the red light district, it is actually a fairly dull town.

You would think that it would rage all night long, but it pretty much shuts down early. (I think that's because everyone is to stoned to stay up late.)

Whereas, you are talking about New York, New York. The city so full of vice they named it twice!

Plus, I can't believe for one second as good as the show would be in Amsterdam, that it could hold a candle to what MMJ will do on New Year's Eve in NYC at Madison Square Garden.
Thank you .... You've been a lovely audience ....I'll be here all week .... Try the veal!

I cant believe people are actually saying Amsterdam. Makes me wonder if they truly understand the gravity of the New Years situation. This is New Years Freakin' Eve, and MMJ is playing the Garden. You know something ridiculous is going to happen, just based on the bands history and the epic shows that have become routine on this tour.

Like I said, unless you have family in Amsterdam or are originally from the city, you're going there for one reason. And while I would normally say "Hell yeah, have a blast!", when your other option is New Years Eve it just pales in comparison. Again, I really cant believe people are voting Amsterdam. Dont get me wrong, Im a fan of Peanut Butter Puddin' Surprise, but we're talking New Years Eve here people! This is going to be legendary!

I'm going to NYE and I'd trade my tix in right now for Amsterdamn.  I have friends who won a trip and they are doing Amsterdamn and Brussels shows.  I'm very very jealous.

>>>NYE in general sucks especially in NYC. I just moved from NYC this year I lived in the city for about eight years and tried to get out of town for NYE every year.

Local advice is usually worth listening to..

I'm sure the NYE show will be sick but I also think it depends what you're hoping to see.. for example I like the setlist from RCMH a lot more than this year's Bonnaroo.. but that's because I want to hear MMJ songs not covers..

For the same money there's no way I'd go to NYC over Amsterdam, sorry.

benweasel

Wow, great responses!
I've been to A'Dam before, and understand the atmosphere, and I've never been to NYC, just don't know if NYE is the best time to go there and be thrown into the crowds.

And the Peanut Butter Puddin' Surprise, that's probably exactly what it means.  I mean, what else would you be doing at home dottin' your I's?

I totally agree with this.  I'd take RCMH over the Roo' too just because I want to hear MMJ songs.  I like a cover or too but sometimes its just too much.  It can get kinda cheesy.  I'm pumped for NYE and I don't really care about the New York thing because my hotel is right outside MSG but i'd be in Amsterdamn in a heartbeat.  You can't beat that city and a small venue.

I would take the ROOOO over both of them!! It's not so much the covers, it's the crowd, the field, the never-ending show, the everything. I mean the Roo IS MMJ. okay, after that---it's a toss up but flying is a pain so i'll take NYE!!!
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

For MSG I think i'd prefer a 3 hr show with mostly originals over a 4 hr show with covers.  I'm fine with either, it will be a good time.   Final answer I wish NYE was in Amsterdamn!

Honestly, I would go to Amsterdam.  Partly because I really want to go to Europe and knowing MMJ's history in that city, I think it would be a really special show for me.  Plus the size of the venue would have a big say in that decision.  I would much rather go to a show in a small place than a huge arena.  While I'd like to visit NYC again, I absolutely wouldn't go there on NYE.  Way too many people for me.

It's not even a question.  The boys are going to bring it to MSG.  Most famous venue on earth. You hear me?  Done.  Zipper it.  No more questions.  Even still, Amsterdam is a great city for many reasons, but that has nothing to do with this music.  A whole 'nother story.  NYE = MSG.  That's it.  I'll be there. DRooling.  :o :o :D ;D ;)

^^I think his problem was solved for him when the Amsterdam show was canceled.
