QuoteI'm fairly "meh" about this

1) the only show in my area is at a huge arena with them not headlining
2) the tickets for an aging classic rocker are going to be extremely expensive
3) i'm not a huge tom petty fan to begin with
4) MMJ is better than an opening act!

el_chode, we posted at the same time - my thoughts are pretty much identical...

haha so it seems. GET OUT OF MY HEAD

chode, i saw your dissapointment breakdown post coming a mile away, too....ha ha

btw, TP puts on a great show but I get what you're saying...I see DBT are opening for them, too and I wish it was a DBT/MMJ show.

I saw Petty at 'roo, or rather, I sat at my camp and enjoyed him from a distance at 'roo. It was nice. But I'm not a super fan, or at least not enough to justify spending over $100 for two tickets unless it seems evident the boys will get a substantial opening set (at least 90 mins).

I don't know if this does anything for anyone, but a ticket purchase gets you the digital download of the new Petty album, due out this spring:

"Every online ticket purchased to the tour comes with an MP3 download copy of Mojo, delivered via email on the album's release date, scheduled for this spring."

That would cover about half the cost of parking, I imagine.

On the "make new fans" argument, I can tell you from numerous shows at the Comcast Center that 10% of the people are inside at their seats for the opener, and 90% are in the parking lot tailgating.

Having seen both the Allman Brothers and Pearl Jam open for Tom Petty I think your fears about set list length are misguided. While both PJ and the ABB play in the 2-3 hour range when they headline their own shows, they were each given pretty much full sets though more like 2 hours. The Allman set at Star Lake in Pittsburgh was unreal seeing one didn't have to sit through the usual 15-20 minute Allman drum trio and Mike Campbell and Benmont with the ABB and Derek and Warren was over the top good. The Pearl Jam/Petty shows were flat out unbelievable. Yes it was strange seeing the Allmans take the stage in sunlight and the place was maybe 20% full at the start but people were literally running to their seats when the Allmans got cooking.

I can't wait to see MMJ tear it up in Columbus but I will travel from Ohio for all 3 of the dates listed on the east coast to catch this pairing.

Hi all,

I have to say i'm shocked people people are not stoked on this.  Jacket is my favorite band (i have not been on here in some time..sorry) and i'm thrilled for the guys!

think about it from their point of view..opening up for tom petty in the heart breakers!?  They must have shit their pants once they wereinvited.  Yes, jacket is getting big but they are still an opening band for legends like this.

Also, i'd pay that money to just see the Jacket alone..but that's just me.  Also, the guys will def still be playing Boston on an east coast tour after this...this would not count as a standard play for them...dont worry.

Thanks :)

Janet

You are spot on correct Noah.

MMJ will make some new fans by doing these gigs.  Not sure why that is a bad thing.

I agree.  Like me, some folks just hoped for some pure, epic MMJ close to home.  Not everyone has the opportunity to travel or spend the money to catch them out of state.  We also regard MMJ as a headliner, though Petty has earned respect and status.  I'm all for some way to draw folks into the MMJ experience, and Petty is a good "gateway drug".

BTW, Lucy, I've been corresponding and trading music with your other half.  Look for MMJ @ Rockpalast DVD in the mail in a week or so.  Say hi to Perry for me.

QuoteWhat the hell are you guys talking about!??!?!  It's three dates opening up for TOM FRIGGIN PETTY!   They will win over lots of new fans just like they did with Pearl Jam.   The other openers on the tour are Joe Cocker, Drive By Truckers and Crosby Stills and Nash.   Sounds like a great gig to me!   Tom Petty amphitheatre tickets are never THAT expensive.  I wish this was coming to St. Louis.

If I was on the east coast I'd be excited that they were in my neck of the woods in August.  I'm sure these won't be the only dates they will be doing around that time.

Agreed. I love the idea and am already planning a trip to Boston for a show. They're going to melt the faces off that Petty crowd.

How can more shows be a bad thing?  Be thankful!

Admission:  My first concert was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 1982.  I had to beg, beg, beg my mom to let me go (it was, after all a rock concert and I was 15).  It was awesome.  Stevie Nicks was a "surprise guest" and stumbled out to do Stop Dragging My Heart Around".  Awesome!!!

My love for Tom Petty remains.

earlier i thought mmj is not an opening band. but i saw dylan open for the dead in 1994.  new perspective.

i'm really, REALLY excited for this!  it's excellent they are coming back to nj.  and they are gonna be up for it too

Hell, Dylan opened for The Dead in 2003.  Even without Jerry, Bob took the back seat, so to speak.

bob took a seat @ giants, not very steadily tho  ;D

come to think of it, most of the "greats" were/are still humble enough and honored to take the back seat for a band they respect.

i bet they're psyched to do these shows which can only bring much goodness.  how lucky - i kept thinking "i'll go to mpp but i wish mmj would come to ny or nj"... what a nice little bonus this is.

I heart me some Heartbreakers!!!!!!
I would love to see MMJ open for Tom Petty. I don't think I'll ever get to see Tom live as he hasn't been to Australia in years and apparently hates the long flights. I was devestated when I got the email from TPATH knowing that I wouldn't be able to go. Plus, one of the show's is on my Dad's birthday and we used to play TP and MMJ on long drives to the coast.

You guys Got Lucky. ;)
How loud can silence get?

Also if anyone is not looking forward to seeing Petty I suggest you go out and watch his documentary Runnin' On A Dream.   I guarantee you will be pumped after you watch it.  Its one of the best things I've seen.

Can't wait for the Boston shows!

Yes BH...this is wonderful news for the boys...the more dates the better. I would rather have Petty open for MMJ, but hey...these will be great shows. I also think this just means more and more possiblity of a nation wide tour.

If this is true, then I take back anything negative I said.   I took the news as LESS likelihood MMJ will headline a New England show this summer, but everyone's positive thinking has my mood improved significantly.

I think the real worry for everyone should be when MMJ out plays Petty...the music world is going to explode...and then melt.  :D
