My Monkey Friend

this sounds really cool. i am a little bummed, because MMJ is not going anywhere in Texas thus far. thank God for Jazzfest

This is a great thing. I saw Petty at Roo and it was fun. I saw Petty and Pearl Jam play together at Summerfest and it was great. Ed Ved came out and did The Waiting and American Girl with TP and it was a beautiful thing. TP can still bring it. I def see a JJ/TP collab.

I think this is good for MMJ and good for the TP fans who dont know what they're missing.

hey guys - i'm a newb here, but i figured i'd try to be resourceful and maybe we can all benefit from this.

so i'm pretty peeved that you have to pay $45 to become a tom petty fanclub member to be eligible for presale tickets.  i want to get general admission tickets without having to pay stubhub an arm and a leg because everything is sold out by public sale.  do you think we can pool some resources and find some unused fanclub memberships to get some good tickets?

thanks guys!  rock and roll!

Can anyone tell me if the Mansfield venue has a GA area up front or is it all seated? It looks like it is seated but I wasn't sure if they could remove the front section or so. I'm trying to plan a little road trip over to the August 21st show.

For Springsteen there last year they removed some of the front rows. It was a small pit, kind of similar to what MPP looks like what it will be.

However, Mansfield pit was way over sold for those shows, too crowded and bordered on dangerous.

Hopefully if they do a pit for this show it won't be like that.

next to the boys, wilco, the walkmen, and magnolia electric company, i've seen tom petty and the heartbreakers more than any other band, starting in 1995. its true the setlists for shows in the past couple years have been a little predictable, but its always entertaining. (if you haven't seen runnin' down a dream yet, do yourself a favor - these guys have always been the real deal) two summers ago pearl jam opened for petty and eddie vedder came out for "american girl" and "the waiting" on a couple dates. i'm hoping the boys pull the same punches. any idea what would sound best? i personally think yimmy would rip the chorus of "refugee" a new one

I'd like to hear Jim sing Shadow of a Doubt (A Complex Kid), Rebels or Thing About You. Like that would ever happen though.
How loud can silence get?

QuoteWhat the hell are you guys talking about!??!?!  It's three dates opening up for TOM FRIGGIN PETTY!   They will win over lots of new fans just like they did with Pearl Jam.   The other openers on the tour are Joe Cocker, Drive By Truckers and Crosby Stills and Nash.   Sounds like a great gig to me!   Tom Petty amphitheatre tickets are never THAT expensive.  I wish this was coming to St. Louis.

If I was on the east coast I'd be excited that they were in my neck of the woods in August.  I'm sure these won't be the only dates they will be doing around that time.

jeez, I'm reaally bumming that i left New England now.  the only saving grace is to me not being able to go is that Comcast  is the WORST venue I have ever been to.  Not that the ampitheater is bad, its the same as all the others, but the lots are total prison camps.  Beers will get you arrested.  If you park in the venue lot, you WILL NOT get out in a timely manner, I once got stuck there for 3 hrs in the lot getting out after an REM gig.   The best lot is next door but easily $40 or more to park.

It is all seated, hate this place.

Yeah, I might try open seating or lawn, though I'm not sure about line of sight or sound.  I spent enough money getting 4th row for Birmingham.

What does $37 - $125 mean?  Uhh, I'll take the $37 version please.

I was at the Comcast Center once, with my brother, for a comedy show (which was awful in its own right).  There were some seats with obstructed views, like with a big-ass pillar in your way.  I'm guessing those are the $37 reserved under-roof seats.

For $49.50, you can sit on the roof and for $62.95, you can listen from your car in the parking lot.  $83.59 gets you a good view of the Jumbotron.  $130 gets you front row, but you MUST face the other way.  The $280 Mafia Package includes a hooker and blow, but does not include an actual ticket to the show ($150 extra plus STD fee).

QuoteHaving seen both the Allman Brothers and Pearl Jam open for Tom Petty I think your fears about set list length are misguided. While both PJ and the ABB play in the 2-3 hour range when they headline their own shows, they were each given pretty much full sets though more like 2 hours. The Allman set at Star Lake in Pittsburgh was unreal seeing one didn't have to sit through the usual 15-20 minute Allman drum trio and Mike Campbell and Benmont with the ABB and Derek and Warren was over the top good. The Pearl Jam/Petty shows were flat out unbelievable. Yes it was strange seeing the Allmans take the stage in sunlight and the place was maybe 20% full at the start but people were literally running to their seats when the Allmans got cooking.

Ouch, that Petty/ABB Star Lake show brings up bad memories as that is the only non-Phish show I can think of that I just could not get tix for...Me and my boy got there when the place opened, scanned the lot especially where the party buses and such were parking and just could not find 2 tix. What a bummer.

You bring up a good point with how Petty's had ABB and PJ open for him and play extended sets, but I would call those shows co-headliner more than either "opening" for Petty. MMJ is a clear opener, and I would be amazed if they play more than an hour. That said, they might play some special sets since they only get an hour
