Bright Eyes, MMJ fans, HELP!

I've noticed that quite a few of the people on this board are fans of Bright Eyes as well as MMJ.  So what i'm asking is are there any bands you would recomend who have a similar style.  I am from England, over here we never get to hear about great bands  and so I need as much help as I can get.  Our airways are clogged up with all this pop idol junk and even the so called "Alternative" media outlets are now turing to support this Karaoke Pop.

Hmmm...do you mean in the same vein as Bright Eyes, or similiar artists that may or may not be in the same vein as Bright Eyes?

Either way, I'd suggest some of the following...all from heavy rotation in the car:

-Interpol, Turn on the Bright Lights
-Strokes, Room on Fire
-White Stripes, Elephant
-Guided By Voices, Isolation Drills
-Cash Brothers, How Was Tomorrow? (I really love that record, you should see those guys live, they kick ass)
-Hot Hot Heat, Make Up the Breakdown
-Damien Rice, O (thanks antoniostrohs!)
-The Sundays, Blind (or anything by them, that voice!  Harriet Wheeler is a goddess!)
-Foo Fighters, One by One
-and anything by Azure Ray (thanks Riny!)

Cheers for the suggestions, I've got most of them except the Cash Brothers and The Sundays.  Never heard of them, I'll see what I can get.

I was thinking of bands in the same vein as Bright Eyes and MMJ.  This is a new genre for me after previously been in a much heavier direction.  Such as At The Drive-in, Tool etc.

I am very pleased to see Azure Ray in that list.  Hopefully I will shortly be off to see them live.  The November E.P was amazing.

hey, they Sundays are from England... you probably haven't hear of them because they haven't put anything out since 1997... but you should still be able to easily find their stuff... "Blind" is my least favorite of their albums... i think their first one is the best... it's from 1990 and is called "Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic"... (that being the town of Reading, pronounced "red-ing" for the non-British here)... it contained their semi-hit called 'Here's Where The Story Ends'

Blind came out in 1992, and it does has it's moments... but i think their third album "Static & Silence" (from 1997) is a bit better than Blind... just my opinion...

YES!  I concur on the Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic...what a fantastic record, it's like a piece of beautiful sculpture.  I am so in love with Harriet's voice...she could sing the dictionary and it would sound great.  

I recommended Blind as it was sitting next to me at the computer when I typed the previous message...but you are correct, it isn't as good as R.W.A.

The Sundays-a must have!  :)

Hmm, John, the bands you mentioned are all great, but not really in the Bright Eyes/MMJ genre...

Perhaps you should listen to Galaxie 500, they're very much like the early MMJ, or their ballads (or really the other way around, but nevermind). And have you ever heard anything by Will Oldham? I know some people on this board don't like him, and I don't think Jim really likes him either, but if you like MMJ and Bright Eyes you might appreciate his work. He has released under the namesd Palace Brothers, Palace Music, Palace Songs, Will Oldham and Bonnie "Prince" Billy. Check him out.

Soo many bands, I can see i'm going to be busy for a while.  I got some of the Sundays stuff, not bad but I can't help but think that I've heard it somewhere before, anyway that must be a past life!

I've heard of VHS or Beta not too sure how but I haven't heard any of their stuff YET.  Likewise with Will Oldham.  But I'll given them all a try as well as Galaxie 500.

I agree with sundaysfan that their follow up stuff was'nt as good..though they had there moments..i have a good version of them doing the Rolling Stones-Wild Horses..

I would just like to say one thing.  Someoen said British Sea Power.  Man i've been into them for ages and THEY ROCK.  The same with Seafood, Belle and Sebastien and Interpol
