Against "crowd favorites" for 5 nights NYC

In an interview with Relix TB had this to say:

What additional songs will be included throughout the sets other than the ones featured on each record?

We're hoping to do a lot of material from around the era of each particular album. Some random covers that we've done over the years,—which there have been tons of— EPs and B sides that we can throw in the mix. There might be some new songs in there as well. We'll also probably play some crowd favorites during the encore every night.

Is it just me? Or are there any other 5 night pass holders that are mildly upset by this? Don't get me wrong, I completely understand that they need to satisfy people who bought single day tickets. But as someone who is attending every night, I was hoping to experience the build, anticipation and arch of the entire catalogue as it was written. If I'm going to be hearing OBH and Smokin on the first night, or OBH every night for that matter, I think that will take away some of the luster that it could have had unnraveling naturally from begining to end.

Just me?

Fair enough. Seems like everyone else is up for hearing the same song 5 nights in a row. Cool.

My God, how will you survive?

I tell you what, I am worried sick about you having to endure such unusual pain and suffering (very inconsiderate of the band!), so how about you come to Nashville and work for me during that week and I'll take one for the team and see MMJ perform all of their studio releases live. I really don't know if I am up for that, you know, missing work, watching one of my favorite bands perform every studio song they have released, but I care so deeply about my fellow forum members that I am willing to make that sacrifice so you don't have to suffer.

lem'me know.   :)

Tracy,

You got it! Let's switch places. You seem to fully grasp the concept I was bringing up. Hey while we're at it, lets get network TV involved to document our swap. Just shoot me a text and we can exchange information.

Not once did I say I was suffering. Of course if I had to see any artist play 5 nights in a row it would be MMJ, they could play the same set everynight. I was merely commenting on what my speculation/imagination dreamed up about the 5 Nights. I think it's safe to assume that everyone on this site is excited about the idea, until now we have had very little information about how it would take place. Now that we do know a bit more, people can start discussing what will be as oppossed to what they thought it would be.

I'll be waiting for your text.

I actually agree with you JKK but for people that have never seen them before I'd probably want to hear mageetah, obh, smoking, etc. I do see where you could lose some possible rare covers for those songs and for people that have seen them a bunch of times I would rather hear the rarities as well. Either way I highly doubt you will be dissapointed.

Doesn't bother me. Can never get enough Live MMJ, so whatever they want to play in addition to the albums is fine by me. I'd take 5 Steam Engines and OBH's in one week, no matter where they are in the set, anytime.

One of the fun things for me about hearing the 5 albums from start to finish, will be hearing some of the "crowd faves" played earlier in the show on their particular album night, instead of as encores on the other nights.

I've seen several Springsteen and Steely Dan "album" nights and it was great getting some classics not in their normal slot.

Each of them did their "album" nights differently. Steely Dan opened with the album, and the 2nd half and encores were a bunch of classics.

Bruce did the albums about 5 -6 songs into the show, and followed up with more songs and encores. Kind of an album sandwich. I actually liked that a bit better, cause you were never quite sure when the album was coming.

I'm interested to see how MMJ does it. I'm leaning towards them opening the shows with the album.

You know what? There are a LOT of crowd favorites. They could play a different set of faves for an encore all five nights and not have any repeats. Besides, I highly doubt that on the It Still Moves night they will play One Big Holiday twice. Unless they were to whip out a jazzed-up reggae version employing the horns from Elvis Perkins in Dearland, that is...

I think I'll be surprised if they repeat any one song during the entire five-night stretch.

They would pretty much have to if you go by that quote, but I get what youre saying

Okay, maybe I won't really be surprised, but I bet there won't be a lot.

I'm so sorry you have to go to New York to see mmj play play all five albums, I feel so bad for you.

See? this is what I am saying. I think this is a statement about where our society is headed as a whole. It's not enough to see your favorite band live, on 5 nights in 1 week, and they're playing all their studio releases; no, that's not enough. And the reason they're playing the crowd favorites is for..... THE FANS!!

Maybe I'm old....  :-/  (well, I am, but still).

Can you imagine if Led Zeppelin played 5 nights in a row, cranking out Led Zeppelin I, Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin III, Led Zeppelin IV, and Houses of the Holy and you had fuktards in the crowd pissing and moaning about having to hear Ramble On or Black Dog again!

Make it make sense!!!!

I hope to hear One Big Holiday live as many times in my life as possible, and hopefully that will happen on more than one occasion during the residency! There is no way a person with a pulse could get sick of hearing this song live.
At my house, we call them uh-ohs.

Many of you heard me report in on my 3-show run to Birmingham, Nashville, and Atlanta from New Hampshire in April.  I plunked down $1000 for airfare, hotel, and rental car.  I got virtually identical setlists for all three shows.  I was a bit disappointed to not get a Steam Engine, War Begun, etc. But

The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

el_chode

I'm not sure I see the controversy here. I'm not being sarcastic either...what's the rub? You make it seem like they're not really playing the whole album, but only choice cuts.

Anyway, I know we have the covers comp, but is there any sort of archive that lists when what covers were covered when? It's easy to figure out the B-sides just by EP release dates. But if they play A Quick One, I'm assuming that'll be on Z. But what about songs like Celebration (assuming that's even a cover)? That was played on Oregon Trail NYE in '06, but was also featured at MSG NYE

Just want to know what to expect when I guess

That reminds me of the time in my car for an entire week I kept putting on the Bonnaroo 2006 show in my stereo and wouldn'tchaknowit, it was the same set list every single time! Yet somehow...and maybe it was magic...but somehow I still really enjoyed listening to it even thought it was like totally identical.

To me, I don't care what that play. Im just happy to get to see our favorite band with my wife and close friend. We traveled from Pittsburgh to Detroit to see them. And just recently we went to Columbus. I'd probably drive to any state if it was near PA.

The fact I get to see MMJ 5 nights in a row is enough for me....

They could've played the same 10 songs all 5 nights, and i'd be cool with it.

Instead, they're giving us EVERYTHING. + EVERYTHING... AGAIN. Can't really complain....
I NEEDED IT MOST WHENEVER tbh
