QuoteI'm so sorry you have to go to New York to see mmj play play all five albums, I feel so bad for you.

See? this is what I am saying. I think this is a statement about where our society is headed as a whole. It's not enough to see your favorite band live, on 5 nights in 1 week, and they're playing all their studio releases; no, that's not enough. And the reason they're playing the crowd favorites is for..... THE FANS!!

Maybe I'm old....  :-/  (well, I am, but still).

Can you imagine if Led Zeppelin played 5 nights in a row, cranking out Led Zeppelin I, Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin III, Led Zeppelin IV, and Houses of the Holy and you had fuktards in the crowd pissing and moaning about having to hear Ramble On or Black Dog again!

Make it make sense!!!!

Agree with all of this, but especially highlighted. I understand discussing expectations and such, but really I can't see one negative thing with these shows. I would not sell my parents + grandparents to go, but I would maybe rent them out, not that anyone would want them... but still! These shows will without a doubt be amazing, awesome, incredible, unforgettable and more!  :D

I'd rent your grandparents. Sometimes I stay up late at night and my wife is in bed asleep. It would be cool to rent your grandparents and have them here and I could turn to them and say things like, "Hey, how about this weather?" or "Tell me about the 60's".  :)

OH now I get it.

I'm glad they're doing that. I've got some friends coming only to the EU show because that's all they know and they refuse to give in to my constant nagging to listen to other albums. So when they realize the awesomeness they just missed, they will repent

I really didn't inttend to argue with anyone in these forums. We all share a bond over the passion we feel for My Morning Jacket, otherwise none of us would even contemplate taking the minutes out of our lives to come here and converse with one another. So let it be known, I look to only have positive interactions with all of you. There's too much negativity going on else where in the world, don't need it with my felllow MMJ commrades.

I suppose I also wrongly or inaccurately stated my opening thread.

When I first heard the idea of 5 nights/5 albums, my mind started racing. How are they going to structure their set? Who will join them on stage? Will we witness something close to Okonokos as far as lighting and set design? Will they build ALL aspects of the show from TF to EU (ie. minimal lighting, stage props as if regressing to how they band actually started, to full blown rock show set ups they've been using since Z)? The idea of the natural progression, or journey of them as a band struck me, and stuck with me.

Make no mistake, when a band does this, it says a lot about where they came from to where they are. We here at this forum know better than most about the bands growth, the bands developement. When they hit the stage for TF they will be reflecting on their beginning. How it all started, us as audience members will be privy to something very special. This journey that will take place before our very eyes, the journey within a journey has potential to be one of the most important MMJ moments in the history of the band. It will no doubt be emotional for all involved.

I guess I was approaching from a purist standpoint. Knowing that the arch and build up to whatever song, OBH, Wordless Chorus, Strangulation, you name it, would be escalating to Evil Urges and the explosions that ensue in many of the tracks included. I just thought that no matter what, with the band and the passionate fans who have purchased the 5 day passes, all together exeperiencing a complete story from the start to the end, any fan, or periphial fan who purchased single show tickets would be blown away by the sheer roller coaster and energy created by this process (as if to say, anyone seeing them for the first time would not have to hear OBH to understand the magnitude and importance of what they bring to the table).

Not to say this cathartic feeling cannot be captured in whatever way MMJ chooses to present it. They can't screw this up, we all know that.

But for me personally. Hearing Wordless Chorus or Smokin from Shootin on TF night, will be completely different then if I were to go through 4 exhausting, exhilirating nights before my ears caught the sound of the low pulsing intro of Smokin from Shootin. Completely different. Not bad. Just different. Hopefully this is a little more clear, or perhaps it's just as perplexing and inviting more people like Tracy to comment on society and how we are a huge group of complaining idiots. Or maybe, just maybe we are a society trying to vocalize our imagination and understanding of the art we digest.

Who knows. Probably both.

I see where you're coming from with the escalation and something special and all that........but really it seems like you're complaining about getting more My Morning Jacket and that just seems silly  ;D. I'm sure it will still be an astounding time and we'll all be talking about how awesome it was after.

i got what you were saying, and i also thought it was gonna be more of a buildup thing and didn't realize they would throw in other album songs for other nights. they've never failed to surprise and astound me, i'm not gonna think twice if i hear OBH at all 5 shows or once...think it was just "off putting" to start the thread about it...but i get where you're coming from. it's all good.

basically, whatever milkshake they give me, i'm drinking.  ;)

PS Welcome to the forum.

if i have to hear Gideon, OBH and Wordless Chorus 5 nights in a row, I'll be PISSED...those songs are terrible.

Hahahaha, it's a deal! I'll send them over shortly... I'll just have to explain the situation to them, but I'm pretty sure they'll understand that I need to send them away for money so I can go see the best band in the world...  ;)

I see what you're saying, but I'm pretty sure there isn't one song they'll play every single night. I'm sure on EU night they will play a ridiculously long set with all crowd favorites, but other than that there are so many crowd pleasers that they won't have to play them more than twice. That is unless they plan on playing for 3+ hours every night. Which would be awesome, but probably wont happen.
don't rock bottom, just listen just slow down...

e_wind

On that note, I would listen to them play Steam Engine, The Bear, One Big Holiday, etc etc my favorite songs etc for 24 hours straight over and over and be extremely happy.

I find it odd that JKK is being attacked on this.  I gotta say I'm somewhat in agreement with JKK on this one.  I was really hoping to not hear any repeats during the run, and I think the songs from each album should only be played that particular night, but I'm not in the band so my opinion really doesn't mean squat.  That said, it really doesn't bother me that much, it's going to be serious epicness all the same.

mgriff73

If this is all I have to worry about in life, then life is good.

Pork Soda

maybe they won't play songs from other periods until the week progresses. like tennessee fire night is stuff from '99, at dawn is anything '99-2001, it still moves '99-2003, and so forth, until we have an epic 4 hour finale on evil urges night. that would be amazing.

Bigsky

QuoteIn an interview with Relix TB had this to say:

What additional songs will be included throughout the sets other than the ones featured on each record?

We're hoping to do a lot of material from around the era of each particular album. Some random covers that we've done over the years,—which there have been tons of— EPs and B sides that we can throw in the mix. There might be some new songs in there as well. We'll also probably play some crowd favorites during the encore every night.

Is it just me? Or are there any other 5 night pass holders that are mildly upset by this? Don't get me wrong, I completely understand that they need to satisfy people who bought single day tickets. But as someone who is attending every night, I was hoping to experience the build, anticipation and arch of the entire catalogue as it was written. If I'm going to be hearing OBH and Smokin on the first night, or OBH every night for that matter, I think that will take away some of the luster that it could have had unnraveling naturally from begining to end.

Just me?

You make me "mildly upset". Who am I kidding...you fucking pissed me off. Are you serious...this is an issue for you? You are bothered about hearing "crowd favorites". Can you listed me the crowd favorites you are worried about hearing? I don't think there are many songs that aren't crowd favorites, and MMJ has a very large catalog of songs to choose from.
I know you are new to this forum, but please don't bitch about something like this; you are about to see the boys for 5 nights in 1 week, so sit down and be quiet.

"I wouldn't make a sound, if I wasn't so angry..."

I would just bring my iPod and ear buds to the show.  That way I could listen to the song of my choosing if I didn't like what I was hearing live.  If the band was really pissing me off, I would just make an entire playlist of songs to listen to and I would just stare at them.  When the lights went down and everyone started leaving, I would hit stop on my iPod and return to my hotel room, looking forward to the next night.  Simple solution.

ynwa

jkk, i think you were perfectly clear in your OP.  i see where you're coming from, i was imagining things in quite the same way when this run of shows was announced.  it sure seemed logical to assume that would be the way of things.  but i don't think you should be upset with this news just because it doesn't fit in with what you had imagined it would be.  just go with it.  there will be no disappointments, only pure awesomeness.

re: this forum, first and foremost - welcome!  and please feel free to post your thoughts, feelings, stories, poems, keyboard art, etc.  people will react & respond in all sorts of ways.  for the most part, i find the people here to be very kind.  they help when they can and share all sorts of wonderful things.  it's just that when you post a negative comment about the band/tour etc - these same kind people go all fisticuffs in defence of our beloved mmj  :)

(just as a side note: you'll find the terminal 5 shows to be a very sore topic for many on here who aren't as fortunate as those of us who will be experiencing this epic event.  not saying you have to walk on eggshells or anything, just be prepared for the inevitible backlash.)

Ruckus

Welcome jkk.  I commend you for having faced the music and then rearticulated.  In one way or another I think most people get ya.  However there is something to be said about receiving something wonderful than having to nitpick.  Wilco played Shot in the Arm and Impossible Germany multiple times during their residency and while I'm sure some bitched, I think it went over very well.

Here's a crappy analogy:

It's like bangin' a dude's wife for five days while the husband really misses her and then telling him that although she put out all five nights, she needs to work on her fellatiating skills, lose some weight, and do that other thing.

If you are reading that quote from relix "we'll probably play some crowd favorites in the encore each night" as the SAME favorites each night, then I can see your point - ideally you wouldn't want the encore of:  wordless / highly suspicious / OBH / dancefloors (for ex) every night in a perfect world (but I'd still take it!)

BUT, I highly doubt that's what they meant - so if they mix it up and you hear the same song 2 or even 3 times over the course of the week, so what? (esp. in a different context each night).

If you are really worked up about hearing any song more than once in a week, that's crazy.   They are called crowd FAVORITES for a reason, ya know.
