WOW John!  Those are some great pics!  Not only getting to meet Jim and have your photo taken with him, but you got your Omnichord signed as well???   :)

How did your family enjoy the show?  I would love to get my girls to a show but they are still a bit young.

Looks like you all had a pretty epic weekend at Newport!  8-)

Epic for me, yes!  For the kids, not so much.  My niece, Regan (dark hair), didn't seem into the music and wanted to play with her cousin.  Maddie, my blue-eyed blonde tornado, left during Jim's set twice for the bathroom; thank goodness my sister was there to take her so I didn't miss anything.

After the photos, when Maddie rushed up and hugged Jim, I thought she was gonna knock him over.  He was so pleased with her affection and it elicited "awww"s from the small crowd.  She had trouble sitting still for the music, but she does like Yim and the Jacket, and rightfully regarded him as a special person.  I didn't get a picture of the hug, but it will be forever burned into my memory.

Because they switched stage locations for many acts (without much notice), I'm a bit confused as to who I saw before Yim.  I know I caught much or most of Sam Bush (blazing mandolin), Doc Watson (background music to my meeting with Jim), Andrew Bird, and all of John Prine.  Prior to Yim, we realized we were at the wrong stage when we were expecting Sam Bush but they introduced O Death.  That means the act before must have been AA Bondy, when we were expecting Blitzen Trapper.

Waiting for the bus back to our lot, for almost an hour (!), we were entertained by a great, funky marching band- What Cheer? Brigade.  Then a cool little trio- ukelele, acordian, and jaw bone- David Wax Museum- who won a contest to play at Newport.  I'm planning to check out their NPR recording sometime today (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=128911328).

In between, I took out my Omnichord and did One Big Holiday, What a Wonderful Man, Tonight (I Want To Celebrate With You), and Touch Me Part 2.  Didn't elicit much response, more confusion than recognition, but gave me something to do.  The fact that I didn't sing was, perhaps, part of the problem, though if I had, I believe the crowd would have dispersed.

Less than three weeks to Essex Jct., VT.  See some of you there!

Sunday was a blast! I caught corey chisel, sharon jones & dk, the felice brothers, some of Edward Sharpe and the MZ and some of Swell Season. I caught 1/2 of the Avetts, then made it to the PHJB set and am sooooo happy i did. YY guested on 2 songs Blue Yodel and St. James Infirmary.   performance was the highlight of the day aside from seeing Levon Helm. YY went bonkers on the vocals on St. James and danced like the devil/madman/god all whilst eating an apple (am I right? did anyone else see that?). My girlfriend took a great vid of this and i will post it when we get a chance to upload it.

Yes, indeed, Yim was munching on an apple while he was helping Preservation Hall finish out their set and, of course, we were wondering what that was all about since he was singing in between bites.  He was pretty wild up there and everyone seemed to appreciate him breathing some more life into the show.
Yim didn't play at the end with Levon as I thought might happen but I did get to see him perform 4 times, nonetheless.  I somehow failed to anticipate that he would join PHJB but came to my senses just in time to get over there.
It was really a wonderful 2 days of music and overall ambience.  And, it's hard for me to argue with the Boston Globe which said "....James was the lynchpin of this year's festival."

Here's my video of Golden, cut short when my daughter asked me to pick her up.  So, I put the camera down, picked her up, and she rested her head on my shoulder while we enjoyed the second half.

Enjoy.

Does anybody know if In The Morning was written by Barry Gibb or Nina Simone?  I'm getting conflicting info on the interwebs.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

I got back last night still spinning from such a great weekend at Newport!!

It is such an easy going and amazingly beautiful setting. Here in Brooklyn going to a free concert or summer outdoor movie can be a pretty stressful crowd situation. I will definitely go back.  I was so glad to sit behind Headhunter and his lovely wife for Jim's set, it was pure chance. (Great to meet you two!) I have had Sylvie in head ever since. Jim was so hot he was on FIRE!!!

Johnny sorry I didn't get to met you, I did see your daughter and her friend get their photo taken with Jim, and just thought to myself how sweet that was...Maureen (Reenie) and I were talking and we might have even commented on it.

Preservation Hall's show sent chills, when the tuba player introduced his mother and spoke of the history of the group I got teary eyed. Saint James Infirmary was amazing, the one with Jim and the following that the band closed with. I was happy to that Ben Sollie and Dan Martin Moore played the small stage. It was great to see them and Jim set up on their own and the show felt very intimate. Jim and Dan messed up on one of the songs and which made the whole set even sweeter :).

Lot's of great photos and videos already posted so I'll just try to fill in one I haven't seen posted yet - His Master's Voice.  Didn't quite expect this right off the bat so I missed the first 1/4 or so......
