Hotels for the Terminal 5 shows?

Anyone have any insight into the hotel situation for these shows?  I imagine I pretty much already know...expensive if they're close and far away if they're remotely affordable.  I'm hoping to be able to stay with a friend for these shows, but may very well end up having to shell out for a hotel.  Any advice?

Here are a few, transportation runs 24 hours to/from these:

in Newark

Hyatt (in Jersey City)

Weehawken--Sheraton  (also next to Hoboken and there are ferries and trains and buses) it stares directly across from times square area

I just wanted to let people know about VRBO.  It's vaction retals by owner and we got a sweet deal on a town house on upper west side.  Check it out if you don't want to stay in a hotel.

for those of you that live on the east coast...would you guys recommend staying in new jersey, renting a car and driving into the city to see the shows, or would you stay in the city and taxi it to the shows? i'm flying in from the west coast...any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. :)

We are coming from Pittsburgh. Im thinking of staying in Secaucus, NJ its about 15 mins from the city. I'd prob take a bus or taxi into the city for most of the day and just go to the show later that evening. Im trying to find a place for around 100-125. (splitting that between 3 people)

I'm seriously considering flying in to catch the first 2 shows but I've never been to NYC before so I'm trying to wrap my head around the logistics of it all.

I've been able to find some fairly cheap hotel rooms outside of Manhattan, but don't know anything at all about a lot of these places and am mainly worried about transportation into the city.  You can take the subway in from places like Queens and the Meadowlands area, right?  Would it be unwise of me to get a hotel room near JFK or LaGuardia?

Also, I've just about convinced myself to go through with this, but for whatever reason, I'm worried about the venue itself.  The more I read about Terminal 5, the worse it sounds.  I'd hate to travel all that way and get my hopes up for two great shows, only to have them both ruined by what sounds like a god awful place to hear (and see) live music.

Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated.

I got a townhouse in manhatten for 3 nights for 450.  It's a nice place to.

If you're staying in Secaucus, you might just want to take a NJ Transit Train from Secaucus Junction Station to Penn Station NYC. It's only one stop, about nine minutes and runs around $3.75 each way. Trains run quite often all day long, I'm just not sure what time the last train out of NYC is.  Here's a link:

www.njtransit.com

I've done this several times for NYC shows, but I stayed at the Meadowlands Sheraton and took their shuttle to Sec. Jct.
Cheaper than staying in NYC, but yet not far away.

There is a rail connection from Newark Liberty Airport also. Same line. For those flying in and not wanting to rent a car, this might be an option.  There are hotels by the airport that have shuttles to and from the terminals, then you'll take a mono-rail type shuttle from the Airport terminal to Newark Liberty Train Station. Your mono-rail transfer is part of the ticket cost to get to and from NYC thru NJ Transit.

Newark Liberty Train Station is 1 or 2 stops before Secaucus, about a twenty minute train ride to NYC.

I would suggest this place, too. The HILTON Penn Station.

It's across the street from (Newark) Penn Station (trains run all night) into the city. It's only about $1.50 a ride, too. The train can take you down to the World Trade Center (lower Manhattan) or you can take the 33rd St to Penn Station and head to Term 5 from there. It's pretty flexible. You can also pick up NJ Transit (see above) there...It'll get you to Penn Station in 12 min or so instead of 45 min like the Path Train (which is cheaper)

You CAN get a hotel out near LaGuardia or JFK and take the subway in. Is there a way for you to fly into Newark? There are more hotels out there, they're probably cheaper, and the train system is just as convenient (IMO). People who came for the NYE show stayed out in Queens and took the subway in so maybe they can chime in. Guy, try not to get overwhelmed. Once you're hear for a day (or a few hours) you can figure out how to get around. Check out the threads where people are trying to room together and go from there. NYers are friendly when it comes to giving directions, too. Just ASK.

jesus

the public transportation is so easy here no one should rent a car even if you stay close by in nj. there are people at all the stations that you can ask for help if you get confused or lost. trains are the way to go...

also, once you are in nyc (if you can read a map) you can get a subway pass for 27 dollars (or something) for the whole week (7 days) and ride around the city/bk all you want. thats basically the same as 3 short cab rides.

Do not be discouraged by Terminal 5 review. In fact, stop reading them. Most of them complain about the temperature (too hot?). Our shows are in late October, so I doubt it will be much more than 70 outside the entire week.
I went to a show at T5 about a month ago, and had literally zero complaints. Get there early for good sightlines, but other than that, it was great.
The wind blew me back, via Chicago, in the middle of the night.

Agreed, plus the traffic can get so bad, no one should rent a car. Public  transportation in the NYC area is about as good as it gets.

I live in the area, and I'm going to train it in each night, and probably sleep over at a friend's at least once.
I NEEDED IT MOST WHENEVER tbh

I live in long island and wasn't really looking forward to paying 20 bucks each night for a round trip train ticket to the city......but mainly don't want to have to worry about driving home after the train back. If anybody is getting a place to stay in the city and looking for someone to pitch in/share a room I'd be open to suggestions.

I've been to T5 numerous times and it is by far my least favorite venue in nyc.  That said, I was probably the first person to buy the 5 show pack.  Would this have been better at the beacon or even the roseland?  possibly.  The thing is that new york has SO many venues and many of them much smaller and more seasoned than T5.  and we are spoiled.  so everyone shits on T5.  they had MAJOR sound issues their first year, but in my opinion, have gotten noticeably better.  The space is very industrial and is just a concrete and steel box, which with the help of MMJs top knotch sound team, will only benefit them especially on the first 2 nights when their sound tends to have more of that high end reverb-y sound.  it will be interesting to see how the sound comes off for Z and Evil urges.  But I've seen band of horses, built to spill, dinosaur jr there to name a few and there were some sound issues but nothing major.  It also really depends on where you stand so get there early (for good sightlines too obviously!)  Also think about it... they are there for 5 nights.  So maybe the first night might have some issues but they should be pretty dialed in after that!
oh and one other word about T5 - security.  They are total assholes there.  Be wary.

as far as coming in from out of town, whether you've been here before or not, you will definitely find better hotel deals in NJ.  and once you sort out how to get into the city (any way other than renting a car and driving in - can't say how much of a bad idea that is) you'll be able to get around fairly easily on the subway or in a cab.  just ask someone.  we love to give directions.
But you should definitely look into renting out a persons apartment for the time you are here.  check craigs list or like the other poster said vacation rentals by owner.  you'll be so much happier staying in the city as opposed to out by an airport where there is nothing to do and nothing around.
feel free to send me a message if you have any questions about nyc!

Personally, I have never had a problem with Terminal 5.  I like it much better than the Electric Factory in Philly.

there is a beam or beamlike thing/small wall situated on the right side that jets out or something if i recall, where your view can be obtructed but you are still w/in the venue; that's the only issue i had. avoid that and you'll be fine (don't come late) most people here will be on the rail or near.. :)

and unless you're phil spector there w/the wonder ear, sound shouldn't be a problem....let's get happy people!! terminal 5 is great!

thank you guys for all the helpful advice! see you all in 4 months!

agree to what all the other local area folks have said .. do not rent a car, it would be a total waste of money and would only cause headaches. also, i'd say staying in jersey is OK as long as your on the PATH train or the NJ Transit .. make sure those trains run late enough for your liking (google, they have train schedules/general info).

can't wait to have you all here!!
