Danny Boy

Has anyone talked about this yet? It blew my mind when they opened with Danny Boy on Saturday night. Carl on sax with the curtains still closed. Totally not expecting that! As a man of Irish decent I loved it.

The crazy thing about it for me was I had just met Patrick Hallahan in the VIP section around 7:30pm before the opening band came on. We were one of the first groups of people up there and got a sick table with a perfect view of the stage. I decided to take a stroll toward the stage along the balcony to look down into the crowd rolling in. When I turned around Pat was standing right behind me finishing up a conversation with a few folks. As he walked towards the door to head back downstairs I introduced myself and was so excited to talk to him. I asked him if he heard the bagpipes being played last Saturday night outside of Levon's Barn at the Midnight Ramble. He said. 'Yeah, that was cool". "That was actually me". We continued to talk for another minute or two and I handed him my bagpipe card and said to call me for any of your bagpipe needs "wedding, parties, funerals, Bris's". LOL. He laughed and I said "You've probably heard me yelling O'Hallahan RULES! in the background for the past week". He got the reference and said "I love that movie, O'Doyle Rules" (from Billy Madison) as he gave me one more handshake before he walked down the back door to head to the stage area. Totally made my night!

And me being in my own little world I thought Pat went down and told the boys he just meet the piper playing outside at the Midnight Ramble and that's why they opened up with Danny Boy. I later realized from the attached interview that Jim James just did a few days ago, that Danny Boy has just been stuck in his head lately. LOL

I just bought Sil Austin album on Amazon the other day with Danny Boy on it!

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the leaves are falling
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be there in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

And when ye come, and all the flow'rs are dying
If I am dead, as dead I well may be
Ye'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.
And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And oh, my grave shall warmer, sweeter be
For ye will bend and tell me that you love me
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.
Wakin up feelin good and limber!

Did they open with Danny Boy? I musta been too inebriated to make out what it was lol. That's awesome. I was just getting pumped for the show.

It was actually the opener from Philly as well.  I believe it was the opener for all of the August shows, but I can't confirm that. I also don't think it was Carl playing behind the curtain, as i'm almost 100% sure it was just the pre-recorded track of Sil Austin's "Danny Boy" playing, as he did not play it in Philly, (no curtain) and it sounded exactly the same.
I NEEDED IT MOST WHENEVER tbh

This is right. I was really confused reading this thread at first, because I would have most definitely remembered the boys opening a show with Danny Boy.

Cool. Thanks for clarifying guys. I saw them in Merriweather in May and didn't remember them playing Danny Boy. It looked like Carl was playing because they had the lights shining on the band from behind projecting their images onto the curtains. As soon as Danny Boy ended they opend up the curtains and went into EU. Either way it was sick! As I said, I was in my on little world that night. Good Boomers!  ;D

Super cool story!

I have been at all of the above referenced shows and am sorry to say that I did NOT pick up on this -  Thanks for pointing it out!  As an irish gal myself, I am a little disappointed that I didn't recognize it!! :)

Can't wait to hear the pipes again!!

At Terminal 5, I believe it was the recording of Sil Austin and not MMJ playing Danny Boy... Either way, it was the perfect opening.

Yeah. I think it was Sil Austin too. I just picked up that album. But they totally faked us out by using the lights to project the bands shadows onto the curtains. Carl can probably play Danny Boy though, so I am still curious to ask him if that was him or Sil.  ;)
