On Friday someone briefly said "isn't Jim performing at the Henry Clay in a few weeks?" I am just now remembering but can't find anything about it. If anyone knew I feel like it would be someone here.

I don't know if there will be a performance or not.  This is what I found online about it:

QuoteSacred Soil: A Kentucky Conversation November 5, 5:30PM
Guests will be invited to relax and listen-in on an open conversation between prominent Kentuckians and select national leaders on the state of our shared soil. Panelists will include Honorary Festival Chair Wendell Berry, author and Soil Association Director Patrick Holden, author Martin Holden, and advocate musicians Jim James, Daniel Martin Moore and Ben Sollee.

Well I'll be at work regaurdless. That wouldn't be a bad thing to attend regaurdless of a performance

I really want to go to this, but in the full festival brochure, it says the talk will last from 6-8 (with a pre-thing at 5:30 with kids), and I would have to leave by 7 because I have to be somewhere else. Ugh...I don't want to be the asshole who gets up and leaves in the middle of it, and everyone sees....

Does anyone know how big the Henry Clay is? I've yet to go in it.

everything I've seen about it says he's going to be on a panel and says nothing about a performance.  The 23 String Band is performing after the panel discussion for sure.  They play good old-time bluegrass.  I wouldn't go expecting a YY performance.  Advertising has said seating is limited.  With all that said, I'll be there.  Part of the discussions will be about the importance of school gardens and since I run a school garden it sounds up my alley for sure.

Yeah I don't want to go take seats just because I'm an obsessed fan anyway. Let us know and take some pics if it happens!

Well, I wanted to go in general...but like I said, I wouldn't be able to stay the whole time, so I'm frustrated and don't think I'll go. :(

A lot of the Festival of Faiths events look fantastic, but I am too busy to attend virtually all of them. Boo.

The panel discussion was very good.  Jim sat right next to Wendell Berry and Mr. Berry seemed really into what Jim was saying and whispered something to him when he was done speaking.  Jim spoke mainly about how TV and being "connected" is disconnecting us from our roots, such as music and nature. He also talked about his sister's organic farm and how eating a meal made entirely from their hard work and the soil was an amazing experience. I didn't snap any pictures but I'm sure some will show up somewhere.

That is AWESOME that you run a school garden!!!! I would love to hear more about it! I helped over the summer at my greenhouse job with a 'class garden,' for our Junior Greenthumbs program, but the owners of the farm/greenhouses are in charge of it and (imo) don't always make the healthiest decisions in their caretaking methods.... but the point of turning kids onto growing and gardening was a wonderful experience, and I'd love to run my own! I just now had time to check this thread, I've got some research to do to see what this panel discussion was all about.....

sounds cool. I thought it was today so I guess I won't be attending. I know this question isn't gonna sit easy with everyone, but honestly does Jim sound like an intelligent educated human that deserves to be making polotical speeches or whatever? I'm not bashing... just honestly wondering. Obviously hes not dumb, but it'd be cool if he was really smart and held valuable opinions since hes such an influential person in our community.

I see Jim as being very in touch with how things work in the world.  He may or may not be textually knowledgeable, as are some people who are activists or writers of certain topics, but he certainly has a cosmic relationship with the world we live in, the world that lived before us, and what is likely to come.

I see it as him lending his name to responsible concerns.  I don't see him going out of his way to catapult any propoganda.  His knowledge is a self-induced philosophy, that when asked to comment, goes on these obscure verbal routes to accomplish these very important, somewhat simple means of fights that we all battle.  He is a realist, and an optimist at the same time.  He may not quote his sources, but I assure you that he has exhausted all rational thought processes to things he sees are important.  He's also keeping his karma healthy.

I think we all "deserve" to be making political speeches.  We all have our own experiences and bring our own unique knowledge and skill sets to the table...we should all have a say in what's going on in our world, since it doesn't just affect those folks who we deem "educated" enough to speak about it.  We live in a democracy for a reason - we're all supposed to get involved, that's what makes it work!

woodnymph, I run a small school garden for my school.  It's only one and half years old.  We have plans to expand.  I've been lucky enough to get the garden built and maintained this whole time from parent donations alone and haven't written a grant yet.  I tend it over the summer and have a day every week kids from school or the community can come and help me in the garden.  They usually get to take home veggies and run through the sprinklers, which they love.  It's been great to watch the way this small garden has greatly affected our students.  They are becoming reconnected to their food. Many kids have fallen in love with veggies they may not have even tried before because of the garden. We made a baby spinach salad from the veggies we grew. When we planted the seeds only a handful of students claimed to like spinach. After tending to, harvesting, and eating the spinach fresh from our own garden there were only one or two who claimed to not like spinach.  The garden is part of the Kentucky School Garden network who presented at the conference last night.  Their mission is to have a school garden in every school in the state.  After seeing the effects of my garden I'm 100% on board with them.

I get what your saying, I shouldn't have used the word deserve. We do all deserve to speak our minds about what effects us. My question was more along the lines of, would Jim's opinion be accepted by the masses if he was a florist?

That's a totally fair point.  I think there are always going to be the "shut up and sing" folks who will dismiss a speaker unless they have a Ph. D or whatever.  I don't know how Jim would come across to those folks.

How wonderful!! What a great feeling to show them how their food grows and what it takes to grow it. I remember planting things with my mom when I was little, and waiting for the first tiny bit of a sprout to appear in the soil, I'd get so excited  :) A school garden in every school in the STATE!!! That is supreme!! Keep us posted on the results, sendin my support your way!

The kids in the Jr. Greenthumbs class were adorable, there was one little boy when it was time for us to harvest the cauliflower... you have to sort of twist and pull it and everything, and he pulled so hard it popped right out of the ground and he fell right backwards and landed on his rear, with this huge cauliflower stalk hahahahah he was thrilled. Such a positive thing for kids. We divided our harvests for the kids too, they loved taking home their work!

Here's a pic of the kids and myself getting some of the weeds up...

I snapped some blurry pics and i'll try to post a few....  as soon as i figure out how....

For me, the whole experience was enlightening.  There was an incredible panel of people there, Wendell Berry, Martin Palmer, Jim, Daniel Martin Moore and about 5 other people.  Jim seemed a bit uncomfortable, out of his element maybe since he wasn't behind a guitar.  When the moderator introduced him, she said he was Louisville's Rockstar.  He looked nearly embarrassed by that comment and never looked up. After the conversation, he didn't say much, just shook some hands, posed for a few pics and signed a few autographs. Daniel engaged me and my girlfriend in a conversation about where he had seen us before.  My girlfriend kind of froze when she got to meet Jim for the second time now.  I will say that Jim truly is "Larger than Life".  They were all a wonderful group of speakers.  Very entertaining, but more deservingly, educational.

Let me correct myself before I get flamed or something and say that when Jim spoke, he did make a very valid point on turning off the television and getting involved in art or music.  His comment was more of a metaphor for Sacred Soil than the literal interpretation of what most of them talked about.

We now plan on talking to some of our city council leaders to see if we can maybe implement the same type of garden in schools like Louisville has.  Maybe even work on a community garden.
