  • The Jayhawks are gods of alternate country -- right up their with Wilco and Ryan Adams.  And Rainy Day Music is very good.  (I keep trying to talk the guy at ear x-tacy into giving me that big poster on the wall.)
  • I might have mentioned it before, but Richard Buckner's album The Hill is amazing.  //www.richardbuckner.com  Check it out.
  • I picked up the Black Keys after seeing a suggestion by someone here and have been very pleased with it.  Blues + Punk = Teh Win!
  • Ryan Adams -- Heartbreaker
  • The new Gillian Welch album
  • All the live Jeff Tweedy I can get

I was very bad at Amoeba a two weeks ago...I mean really bad. You know you spent waaaayyyy too much money when they start offering you free t-shirts and canvas bags and other tokens of appreciation for your patronage. Last week I was in Louisville and wouldn't even let myself go down Bardstown Road past ear X-tacy since I've exceeded my CD spending limit by, oh, my rent or so. Amongst my finds:

*Ben Folds Live--I can't even tell you how fabulous this album is. It's just Ben Folds, his piano, and very compliant audiences doing some of his solo stuff and a lot of Ben Folds Five favorites. ("Last Polka," "Best Imitation of Myself," and esp. "Narcolepsy" are magnificent.) The version of "Army" is one of the greatest moments of live show I've ever heard on any album. If you are in any way a fan of him or the band, you must own this.
*Starflyer 59: Old--This album is everything guitar-driven, melodic, soundtrack rock should be. (You know, soundtrack rock--very visual and moving--you hear it and you can just imagine it playing during a scene in a movie or in your own life. Or am i crazy?)
*Tanya Tucker: What's Your Mama's Name?--She hit the scene at 13 many, many moons ago, and, in my opinion, is one of the most underrated country singers ever. Her later stuff is crap (once the Nashville industry sank their teeth in), but her old recordings are priceless.
*Freakwater: Feels Like the Third Time--Don't ask me why I didn't own this before. All the talk about Catherine Irwin and I felt compelled to get this.

Old stuff I relied on for my drive from Louisville and that I suddenly have caught myself listening to despite the fact that I just purchased dozens of new CDs:

*AC/DC: Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap--I think the world might just be a better place if more people embraced AC/DC instead of relegating it to the Shivelyesque distant reaches of civilization.
*Whiskeytown: Pneumonia--Perfect for driving through the South at dusk. I'm sure you know what plays at dawn.
*Afghan Whigs: Black Love--One of my biggest failures in life was not falling in love with this band until after they had dissolved, so I never got to see them live.  The energy in their music is unparallelled by any of their Seattle-era contemporaries (and yes, I mean all of _those_ bands.)

And the Major Heartbreak/Disappointment: I ignored everything I had read and bought Liz Phair's new album. I managed to convince myself that everything I'd heard was prejudgmental snobbery. I only made it through the first half last night, but from first listen I really wanted to hurl myself out of my window...and my ground floor neighbors have cacti. :(

While i don't always agree with their reviews most of them are reasonably accurate. The Liz Phair one was perfect. They gave it a 0.0

That is a shame as the Afghan Whigs were amazing. Black Love is great but Gentlemen is still my favorite album of theirs though.

Poor Liz Phair... She only got a good review from People magazine. They said it was a mix between Sheryl Crow and Avril Lavigne... and that it was good. I don't nderstand how anything mixed with Avril Lavigne could be good. And it's Liz Phair for chrissakes!!! She should be making records that influence others, instead of making records that are influenced by the likes of a teenage, fabricated pseudo-punk. Anyway - I've been spinning some old Smoking Popes, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Guess Who, Seals & Crofts, and TONS OF AVRIL LAVIGNE!!! ha. I'm such a snob... sorry.
You came around when I needed you, now I'm up to my neck in you.

I just have to promote one band today. They're my other favorite band. Everyone has got to listen to the Red House Painters. My friend Angie gave Mark (Singer/uitarist/writer/producer) "At Dawn," and while he was Tennessee for some reason or another, he gave it a listen and loved it(of course)! O - you mentioned that you loved the slow and sad of "the Tennessee Fire." If so - you've got to listen to this band. My favorite albums are "Ocean Beach" "Self-titled (Roller-coaster on the cover)" "Songs For a Blue Guitar" "Down Colorful Hill" But every album is amazing! The lyrics are amazingly intense, and Mark's voice "soars and takes my wounds with it." That's actually one of his lyrics. Anyway - everyone - please check this band out if you don't already know them. Is there anyone else on the board that loves them? Or am I alone?

A while ago, someone posted on the `how did you get to know MMJ´-topic that he heard about them 2 years ago, but only recently bought his first record of them. Well, I´ve been wanting to buy a record by Cat Power since 1998 (!) and two days ago I finally did. `You are free´ is the one and I recommend it highly to everyone who, like me, likes the sad ballads like `I will be there when you die´. In fact, some of the songs on that wonderful album are those kinds of songs that are even better when you put ´em on really loud in one room, leave the door open and go sit in another room. You know, how the whole space fills with that music... Magnificent.

Cat Power - You are free

It´ll change your life.  :)
I'm ready when you are

Agreed. I've had that album playing on and off for awhile now. He War, Don't Blame You and Speak For Me are great tracks

I saw the red house painters a couple of years ago, and really liked them!  mark kozelek's solo stuff is really good, too!  The album Rock and Roll Singer is awesome.

I've been listening to a ska guy a friend introduced me to name Chris Murray.  He's wicked...  check him out!

!!! - Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story)
Get it and love it. The title track is fantastic. This indie dance music is too much fun.

hipkink

YES! !!! is based in New York right now, but they're originally SACRAMENTO boys!!! Nick (The singer) was kickin' it at Espresso Metro the other night. Totally cool guys... And if you want to see an amazing, energetic live show, they're definitely good for that. You can't help but dance.
I've been in a nostalgic mood, so it's been a healthy diet of Van Morrison (His Band & Street Choir / Tupelo Honey), R.E.M., Simon & Garfunkel (Bookends / Bridge Over Troubled Water), Janis Joplin (Pearl), The Velvet Underground (Loaded), Savage Rose, My Bloody Valentine (Isn't Anything), and De La Soul (3 Feet High and Rising). mmmm. tasty.
