It's a little more "gangsta" to say "holla".... like "holla at ya boy!".
Now THAT sounds totally douchey. :)

Quoteyeah to everything.

hey, i have a question:  what does holler really mean?
i can't use it properly, and i def can't say it b/c i sound like a serious douche.  i kind of thought it meant "hey, call me back" or "write me back", or even just "hi".

It's also used to describe valleys in Appalachia.  Ex: "I live up in that there holler."
Just imagine that sentence with a really thick southern accent.  ;)

well if i'm telling someone "i'll holler at you later," i pronounce it hall-er. i'm not sure if that's an adequate phonetic spelling...
"[Adrien Brody] is a big hip-hop fan and plans on becoming a producer. He is being mentored by RZA."

i am imagining loretta lynn saying it.  like she does in coal miner's daughter.
and it's making me think of the smoky mountains and my best friend and camping.  so now i feel very good.  :)

Ya'll just holler at me when you're done.

this is the pronunciation i'm talking about.
there is ZERO chance that i can get away with that shit in real life.

(completely OT here...)
EC, I just realized that I owe you an email. I got one from you a couple of days ago and it's still sitting there in my inbox. Without a response. That shall soon be corrected.

Holla!

EDIT: .... as if all this "holla" business wasn't OT enough.  Ha! I just realized how funny it was to say that owing you an email is OT. :)

Holla!   ;)

i say holler all the time and living in ohio, being from KY, people give me weird "inbred hillbilly" looks all the time.

my uses for the word "holler"

"give me a holler later."

"my brother benjamin lives up the holler"

Angry Ewok

Quote"my brother benjamin lives up the holler"

Oh, wow... Yeah, I get weird looks if I ever mention a hollow.

Yeah man, if you say hollow around here, people give you that "you think your shit don't stink" look!  "Listen to fancy boy there, using them big words." (again, in a very southern dialect)

QuoteTo "holler" at someone used to mean to yell at them. You know, like "quit hollerin' at me". It's also a Southern thing. At least, I've always thought it was.

In the last few years, it's become something different. You pretty much have it correct. If someone says, "holler at me later", it means to "get in touch", whether it's by phone, email, etc...

Exact.

The words, while sounding similar, are actually different. The annunciation and the meaning are as important in their differences as the word ****** is to Nigga.

The Southern word, Holler, meaning shout or yell, sounds like [Haul-errr]
The urban slang, Holla, meaning get in touch, sounds like [Haul-ah]

Often times you will hear people, typically Southern, replace the annunciation of Holla with the annunciation of Holler. This is pretty much for the sake of mockery.

I think if a black person heard a white person say either of the n words they'd be some what offended.  not to get off topic.

Angry Ewok

You know, this turned into a great topic... it got me feeling nostalgic, remembering some long gone friends and family that just talked "diff'rent"... Last month I was able to meet Kathryn Tucker Windham, and I was totally enamored with her Old South dialect. It's really a beautiful thing, I think... mix of King's English and country drawl.

Somewhat circumstantial, but yeah, you're right.

Spend my dollar; parked in a holler neath the mountain moonlight; hold her
Uptight; make a little lovin, a little turtle dovin on a mason dixon night.
Fits my life, oh, so right: my dixieland delight.

This past page in a half reminds me of why I choose to read this forum every time I get back in front of a computer...Love the discussion. And on such a random topic as well.
Turned on some music to start my day
I lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes and I slipped away

That was 2 years ago this week! ( Shouldn't the forum curator get a paycheck for his efforts? )

Tom and I were just talking about how fun it was getting together at Rites of Spring. Meg's helmet, the blue one seen there, was passed onto me - which I wore to the Ryman, where Tom & Specialist (seen above), and other Vikings, were able to get this photo...

The photographer was Two-Tone Thomas.
