re: Ashamed, John said before playing it "I can still picture the condo I wrote the song in" last night - coincidence, huh?   He didn't mention remembering wolof walk by though ?!

Haha that's pretty weird, I cannot claim that it was written in my presance I guess, as it was a dank apartment in Providence we were hangin in (it could never be passed as a condo) but I can assure you I saw the song stripped down and being played in its most early stages for around 42 seconds before we left (like idiots).

Generally Tick shows have not surpassed $15 even in Providence, the highest I think was like $22 and that was Deertick, Middle Brother, Dawes. The last 3 shows I don't believe I've paid much more than $12. Not sure if that is the prices round all the states but I like to think that the 'Tick keep it cheap.

However we also have super cheap venues like AS220, the Met and Firehouse 13 which Deertick play often....I mean J Roddy for $8 sign me up all night

he might have said apartment, actually.   Anyway, funny that he did mention that.    His comments by and large were pretty funny.   He also loved the "beer spritzer" where he sprays a mouth of beer straight up and back onto him to cool him down, or out into the audience.   I totally get the comments from some of the reviews that he looks more like the guy having fun at the keg party, not the professional up-n-comer musician, but I enjoyed the vibe.   I suspect he was less hammered than usual, not that I've seen him before.   He was pretty coherent.

thanks for the review, mahg33ta. sounds like an incredible time. last time i saw a full deer tick show was in bloomington, indiana and john introduced "authority song" as "a song by one of indiana's favorite sons" or something like that. they really ripped it. they also tore petty's "breakdown" a new one. he made sure to point out that he was glad to be back in the town where he came up with the band name. i tried to convince my now-wife (then fiancee) to learn the liz izenberg's part of "friday xiii" so that she could try and convince the guys to let her get up and do it with them. i told her, "this is the last chance we'll get to convince them to play our wedding," but she wimped out.

I am not missing the J Roddy Show and will be getting my tix this weekend although I'm sure it won't sellout. Wondering if the Independent Man is John M? There is no band website or myspace and I've never heard of them/him. The independent man is the man who sits atop the RI state house tho so I'm assuming the act is local.

turns out I'm going to need a babysitter if I go to this (wife has something that night), so I was doing a little more research on this idea.   If it was John M opening that would for sure push me off the fence.

The idea has extra appeal because the following night, Deer Tick is playing in Portland the following night, and Joe Fletcher & the Wrong Reasons are the opener - which is the other opener Tuesday night at Met w/ Roddy.   But, after researching some more, I've concluded The Independent Man is somebody else.   I found
http://www.myspace.com/theindependentman
and thought well maybe it's a side thing he's doing.... but listening to the song, it's definitely not John M.   Oh well.

Love the Deer Tick stories. I still havent seen em live (come to the Burgh!), but I had no idea about that Deervana deal. They actually cover them them really well, and I would definitely pay a decent buck to see them cover Nirvana with Grohl on drums and playing gtar on occasion

Oh no!  This could be trouble.   ;)

I had this posted on the old Tick thread but if you haven't seen it, it's high quality even though the crowd sucks.

Really jealous you guys.  I tried to figure out how I could pull it off but all potential possibilities ended with a big slamming door.  Have fun!

Have they been playing full Nirvana sets at other shows or was Roo the first time?

Also, were they "advertised" for that set/show as Deervana or did they pull that out of nowhere?!

Deervana, from what I remember hearing, started as a yearly bday party gig for a friend of the band's in Providence, prob just 2-3 yrs going now....

I believe they played a set at SXSW this year and heard it was crazy. They did it again at Bonnaroo and have one scheduled for the Brooklyn Bowl in NYC coming up (or it already happened) I believe.

It's a rare occurance, something I have yet to see, but have heard its pretty legendary.

The Bonnaroo set was unannounced. I missed it. Their real set was awesome though. They covered The Replacements "Waitress in the sky" and "La Bamba". I don't know if that's common or not, it was my first  DT show, but it was great. I did see a secret Justin Townes Earle show in the air conditioned Ford tent though. Sat about 2 feet in front of him and bullshitted with him a little. It was awesome.

So I was watching Hall Pass (loved the movie ;D) on my flight across the pond yesterday and it opened up with Art isn't Real and right after goes into a bit of Houston, TX.  Put a big drunken smile on my face.  I had no idea that so many of their songs made the soundtrack of this Oscar worthy film.

Free Show in Providence next friday at Waterplace park!!! We are definitely spoiled here in Providence with all the Deertick we get....This makes up for being on call at the ER for the booze cruise show in Boston the night before.
