Holy crap, other geographers! I am a GIS software developer for agriculture - most of our business is supplying within-field variable rate fertilizer recommendations. We used to be based solely on ArcView, but we have recently built our own proprietary system using Oracle Spatial.

Ok, there's gotta be some sort of GeoJacket thing going on here. Sounds like you get to do some cool stuff, I envy people who can really understand code. I've taken some Python scripting classes but usually just stick to customization in ArcPad collection forms... not too difficult at all.

Awesome, you'll likely be using GIS as just about everyone is now... depending on your location you shouldn't have trouble staying employed.

If I sat next to that guy, I'd have a new job right now! Remote Sensing (aerial, satellite imagery) is what I did in grad school, and didn't get into coding until the job I'm in now.

We definitely have a little GeoMMJ thing going, Kory.  Bread on the table is what matters.  I do like where I am, although it would be nice to bring in some heavy spatial analysis work.  But I can't complain as we work mostly for local govt's in the 29 county appalachian region of Ohio (counties and municipalities who have limited funds but are trying to move into the modern way of looking at spatial data).

Jrat, I agree with Kory.  If you want to end up in the GIS field, there are possibilities all over, just depends on where you are and if you're willing to go where the work is.
Athens is in southeast Ohio, about 2.5 hours from the Cincy outerbelt and about 1.5 hours from Columbus.  It's a great little college town set in the foothills of the Appalachians.

Yep, I usually get a bunch of head nodding and blank stares when I launch into an explanation of what I do.  Been in the field 12 years now and my mom still thinks I "do GSI".  I was actually thinking you might be a GIS'er when you left such a short description on your post.
I used to work for a local firm when I lived in Wilmington, NC that did nothing but property parcel conversion taking hard copy tax maps and converting to GIS.  Have been in Athens, OH for the last 9 years working for a non-profit, grant/word of mouth contract funded entity that is part of Ohio University's School of Arts/Sciences.  We run the gamut, much like you, but have been heavy in hosting ArcIMS sites the last several years for local watershed groups, municipalities, etc.  
We've recently received some funds to do some raster modeling, which is a nice change, since most of our work and data is vector-based.  

Sounds like you have one of the good jobs wharf rat! Selling your soul at a consulting firm isn't the best sometimes... oh well, we all gotta put bread on the table. We dable in ArcServer and IMS but that's usually our underworked programmers that deal with that. I know it's shitty for a geographer to ask a location question but how close are you to Columbus or Cincy? We have offices there...

Im a behavior therapist who works with individuals who have developmental disabilities (mostly autism and aspergers). Up until about 2 weeks ago I was pursuing a graduate degree in social work but Im taking some time off, not sure what I want to do. A masters degree is a definite, Im just taking a semester to re-think what its going to be in.

I work for Thermo Fisher Scientific.  We make laboratory equipment of all types.  I do technical support on legacy Barnstead International/Lab-Line/ERTCO products.  Mostly I help people fix spectrophotometers, fluorometers, water systems, hotplates, etc.  It's an ok job but I only make teacher-money, which doesn't work too well with a $62,000 student loan.  I'll probably be going back to grad school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in a year or two.  I just need to decide what for!  I have a BS in Chemistry, so I should have a wide range of choices at least.  I'm considering becoming a brewmaster!
