Well, Japan is very crowded in parts.  And melons are usually quite big.  At least most people prefer big melons, some people like small melons, most people like round melons.  Round melons take up more space when you're trying to stock 'em or stack 'em.  A square melon allows you to jam more melon in the same space.  I bet melons cost alot of money in Japan.
I'm not saying it's easy...walking into sweet oblivion.
