Book jackets or dust jackets or whatever

I don't like dust jackets and I throw them away when I get a hardback. My wife insists on keeping them on and will not let me throw them away (for her books that I borrow). Arrggghhhh! Hate 'em!

Can I get a witness?

holla! first thing i do is take those off.
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

Stickers on the front of CD cases......they really piss me off! Especially when they don't peel off cleanly.

I'm digressing from the subject now. But people who put "Baby On Board" signs up in their car windows.

I want to run those fuckers off the road!

i always keep them... the inside flaps make good bookmarks.

I ALWAYS throw mine away...it's kind of a pet peeve, having the book slide around in that damn jacket while I hold it. I actually try to only buy paperback books. I guess the whole idea of hardcover books pisses me off... >:(

Crispy

I take em off when I'm reading the book and put em back on when I'm done. I'd like to throw them away tho, I always have 3 or 4 just lying around.

Hate dust jackets. Actually, I hate hardcovers in general.

I don't like yellow jackets or dust bunnies either.
Not the one thing. I used to think I
could at least some way put things right.

Dust Jackets suck ass. Take them off when I read. I f'n hate stickers on CD's and DVD's along with those shit strips they use for security on top and along the sides. They finally found an glue that doesn't leave a nasty residue.

BH

Why all the hate?  What did the book jacket ever do to you?  The poor things are just trying to help protect your presious books.  Plus, not only do they tell you the price of the book in american dollars, but usually canadien dollars as well!   What would we do without that knowledge!   And how in the world am I going to pretend like I read the book at my Thursday night book club without those nice little summaries on the inside of the jacket.  Sheesh.  Save your anger for important problems like ticketmaster fees and trying to get that last drop of wine out of the bag in the box.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

where is the love for the cover art for the book?  I dont read with the jacket on but its nice to have something to look at when your done and reminiscing about the time you spent with the characters

Oh I'll never say I knew you, but my heart can't wait to meet you on the other side

I never like those b/c I like to make up what I think the character looks like. Remember Ignatius J. Reilly from Confederacy of Dunces? The book jacket interpretation of him is totally unnecessary (IMO).

Crispy

That's the second time in a week I've heard a random reference to Confederacy of Dunces - I guess I need to read that book.
I also dislike the bias created by an image of a character in cover art - similar to the destruction of all the mental imagery I had of Middle Earth prior to Jackson's movies.

BH

I actually couldn't agree more about disliking the bias created by the image.  The imagination is always better.  It's what makes books better than movies.

I would also like to give props to Confederacy of Dunces.  My boss made me read that several years ago and I've read again since.  Ignatius, and all the other characters for that matter, were just brilliantly created.   Read it Crispy!

Ha!  I was just reading about John Kennedy Toole (Author of Confederacy) and noticed his only other published novel was called Neon Bible!   Both novels were published 11 years after his suicide.   Sucks to win a pulitzer prize when your dead.

It's a great story about his mom taking his manuscripts to Walker Percy (and Walker Percy trying to get out of reading them). It's in the foreward.
