Yeah i wasn't actually sure if that was your team, i just assumed so since you live in Toronto.

I switched over to the Leafs during the late 80's through to the mid 90's during the Wendel Clark/Doug Gilmour eras. The Leafs are still one of my Top 5 teams, but since I never grew up in an NHL town or region (my hometown is half way between Toronto and Montreal, and Ottawa didn't have a franchise when I was growing up), the Bruins were an easy choice because they had a big connection to my hometown of Kingston in the 70's and early 80's. I still cheer for the Bruins, but normally I root for the team with the most likeable Canadians on it... thus I like Carolina, Tampa Bay, Anaheim, Calgary and Edmonton. I do love Calgary and I hope they win the Cup.

some really exciting hockey just took place here in Mankato over the weekend. Its the WCHA first round of the playoffs. The U of MN vs MN State Mankato. each game went into over-time, and two of them went into double over-time.  MSU has never beaten the U of M in a series before, and its going to continue. but what a series,  and what goal tending. I'm more a gophers fan, but i have to cheer for MSU in this situation. the frozen four is in Minny this year, so i should be checking that out.

Biggest game of the year for my Caps.

yes, the wild made the playoffs, and i'll have a team to cheer for. i guess next year for the leafs. although i don't think they're technically out of it yet.

in college hockey, the U of MN lost early to Boston College.

Just home from work and am about to ride my bike (it's the nicest day we've had so far this year) to the bar to pick up a case of cans.  It's been a tough past few years as a Capitals fan, I'm so excited for tonight.

man, playoff hockey!! put the kids to bed!!!

Jaimoe & K, i've heard that some Canadians don't really like Crosby because he played high school hockey at Shattuck-St. Mary here in Minnesota, is there some truth to that?? they did win the national championship this year.

Crosby playing US high school hockey is and was a non-issue. I don't think many Canadians associate Crosby with US hockey anymore since he went on to torch the Quebec Junior Hockey League not long after his stint in Minnesota. Lindros played US high school hockey before he played with the Oshawa Generals in the OHL, and all people cared about then was "The Next One's" star status in the Canadian Hockey League. BTW, keep an eye on phenom John Tavares for the Oshawa Generals. He'll be the NHL's 2009 #1 pick overall. Some Canadians may not like Sid because he's seen as a baby and constant whiner, whether that's true or not is debatable.

Rangers vs. Lightning 12ET

Pretty excited for my Rangers to get the season started. Anyone watch them beat Metallurg Magnitigorsk the other day? Was a good game, shouldn't have been that close though.

Your right about that, I loved how fired up Drury was after the 2nd period goal though, glad they made him captain. They looked ok today, what you would expect with so may new players.

I thought the Rangers-TB game was kinda dull. The Rangers came to play, but the Tampa Bay weren't gelling as a team nor were they interested in initiating body-contact, other than Lecavalier and Roberts.  The Lightning on paper are intriguing to be sure, but that organization has been revamped from top to bottom, including the coach and GM, but I still expect TB to make the playoffs even if their D is a little suspect. Steven Stamkos (1st overall pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft) looked pretty good for his first NHL regular season game. He's a keeper for sure. Reminds me of a young Vinny Lecavalier.

The second game in Europe featuring Ottawa vs Pittsburgh was more entertaining and intense.

Last year's #1 pick for the Rangers, Alexei Cherepanov passed away during a game in Russia. First and foremost my thoughts and best wishes go out to his friends and family. As a NYR fan, I closely follow the Rangers future stars and this news has shocked me pretty deep. He was a very, very talented player and I was looking forward to his trip across the ocean next season. :'(

On a brighter note, there is some good hockey to be played tonight. I'll be watching the Rangers/Devils game obviously.

Yeah, its very sad and surprisingly. Apparently he caught Jaromir Jagr's elbow to his chest during a shift change, and he collapsed immediately

What makes it more eerie, is that apparently Cherepanov's idol was Jagr and Jagr was up to this point basically being mentor/teacher for him. I also read Jagr was yelling 'wake up Alexei, wake up!!' after he collapsed and began to cry shortly afterwards

As a Pens fan, I have no ill will towards Jagr, but I have a feeling this haunts him for life

Very sad though. 3rd hockey prospect to die this year (via different causes). And he was a VERY good prospect. 17th pick a year ago, but if teams didnt think hed be overseas a few years extra, he wouldve been a Top 5 pick

The reports coming in now are that the Russian medical staff at the arena waited far too long to administer aid to Cherepanov. I'm unsure if they had a defibrillator at the arena, but if they did and still waited, then this tragedy could have been avoided, see Jiri Fischer in Detroit (where a defibrillator saved his life during a game).

Cherepanov did not die from a check or an elbow, especially from Jagr since they play on the same team and same line. He apparently just turned white and collapsed on the bench while Jagr and linemate Pavel Rosa were talking to him.

Cherepanov was indeed a big NHL prospect. He was likened to Malkin in Pittsburgh and would have been in the Rangers lineup next season.
