WHAT!!!?!?!?!

peafunk is gonna go into cardiac arrest!

....and now that I actually see the deals, he definitely is. Over 2 deals, Richards and Carter for Simmonds, Voracek, Schenn, and the 8th pick and a 3rd rounder. Holy fuck did they just shit the bed  ;D ;D ;D

I heard about them getting the trading rights for Bryzgalov, which IMO is dumb because BOB looks like a good goalie of the future, and certainly someone who needs the playing time to see. Ilya totally eliminates that (though I do think he's a better goalie right now)...But trading Richards AND Carter...christ, love ya Flyers!!

Carter I can see, but not Richards. Schenn is just a kid, but if he lives up to his potential, the Flyers will have a dandy power-forward. I like Simmonds too, and he's really young. But Flyers fans will not be happy with this deal with seeing their heart-and-soul leave for LA. However, man those already good Kings are looking like a legit Cup threat.

Really?!

The biggest reason I dont get this, is Richards and Carter have great contracts and neither has hit their prime yet (IMO). Theyre both signed thru 2020 at about $5.5/yr each. Theyre both worth a mill or 2 more than that, especially Richards, and havent even peaked.

I like Simmonds, I like Voracek, but I cant see either being near as good as the 2 guys they lost. Maybe Schenn or the #8 pick become stars (or their later picks), but thats a huge gamble.

Paying Bryz $5.7/yr for 9 years is too much and too long as well, and its assumed they cleared the cap space for him.

IMO, it wouldve made more sense to trade a Giroux (guys gonna get a big contract next time around) or Briere (much older than the 2 they traded), than Richards or Carter. As a Pens fan though, I love it! Cant believe GivenToFly is happy they got rid of Richards. I even like him and hate the Flyers.

Schenn is a legit power-forward and should make the Flyers this year (the Kings called him up late last season straight out of junior, although I don't think he saw any ice time). If you've followed Schenn, you'll know he was the best forward at this year's World Juniors and is a star in the CHL. Simmonds is still young and will fit in nicely on the 2nd or 3rd lines.

The Flyers #8 pick is a real dandy, Sean Couturier, another star junior and power-forward. He won't make the team this year, but he'll be an impact player down the road.

Trading away Giroux would be crazy. He already has a better offensive upside than Richards, and Carter may have peaked since injuries have really hampered his play. Plus Giroux is young with great pedigree. Teams are leery of taking on Briere's contract, although I've been a fan of his since his junior years.

Like I said, I like the deal in 3 years.

This is a great deal.  Carter is softer than marshmallow when the playoffs start and Richards is his butt buddy so he woulda been even more of a headache w/Carter gone.  Now Powe is traded and they are not re-signing Carcillo.  Could they be clearing space for a big name free-agent?
In general, 75% approval around town here in Philly regarding the trades.  If Homer didn't pull the trigger now, the Flyers woulda been stuck with those drunks for the next 10 years as they both have no-trade clauses about to kick in.  This is now Girioux's team.

Just saw this discussion. Thankfully I had my defibrillator on me so I survived my heart attack ;D Honestly though, I'm in 100% agreement with YouAre GivenToFly & bumble. I really like the deals. I wrote this when we were talking about NHL 11

Call me crazy, but I'm not all that upset with the Richards & Carter trades. Carter habitually went AWOL in the playoffs. I also never liked Richards as a captain. He's just kind of, for lack of a better word, douchey. Cap room was cleared & we finally got a top tier goalie. The players we got in return for the trades have a lot of upside. Plus we got a 1st, 2nd & 3rd round pick. I honestly don't think the Flyers are done making moves either. I see them picking someone else of value up as well
Homer no function beer well without.

Jaimoe

You can dislike the contracts of both Richards and Carter, but the former is a born leader and one of the best young captains in the NHL. Richards has been a captain at every level and is his combo of skill, toughness are leadership are rare in the NHL, especially for players of his generation.

These trades could go either way and right now, Philly isn't a better team than they were in this season's playoffs. I'm a born Bruins fan and I thought the Flyers were the better team in the series and the best team, on paper, going into the playoffs... except they once again revealed their achilles heel, i.e. goaltending.

I hear ya, Jaimoe. & I really can't disagree with you. Carter & Richards are both tremendous players. I really cannot put my finger on it, It just feels like time for a change. Time will tell if the correct decision was made.

Oh, & rumors are flying in the city of brotherly love today. Word is that the Flyers are going to charge hard in free agency to pick up Steven Stamkos. I may pee myself if it comes to fruition!

That's the word I've heard as well. I too would pee.

Glad to see the Flyers making BIG changes, hopefully sending a message to the team. It is time they get the job done... Flyers fans are far, far too forgiving with this team.

I'd be stunned if the Flyers got Stamkos. Stevie Y will do everything in his power to keep him. Look for TB to make a run at Brad Richards. He lives in TB, loves Stevie (what hockey fan doesn't) and has ruled out most teams looking to add him. Even if the Bolts don't sign Richards, they'll be a Cup threat next season with their youngsters only getting better plus they have cap money to use in the free agent market.

Really? I've heard that the Bolts are in cap turmoil (on Philly sports talk radio). Hence the possibilty existing that the Flyers could in fact pick up Stamkos. I may be wrong. I don't pay attention to other team's cap concerns

As of 5 pm today, any team can call and talk to Stamkos' agent and send an offer sheet to them and the nhl offices.  Players cannot sign until 7/1.  So why would Stamkos sign w/ the bolts when some team will most likely offer a deal?  It will be matched by TB or he is gone and then the bolts get 4 1st round picks.   Teams making the offer must have cap space and the 4 picks required as long as the player is offered more than 7 mil.  He may even get offers from other teams just to drive up the cost for the bolts and hamstring them for the future.

Totally agree with you on Richards. Carter definitely has talent, but from what Ive seen appears very streaky and doesnt give a lot of effort. If Im a Philly fan, Im not sad Carter is gone but Richards, as you said, is the epitome of a captain. I couldnt imagine trading him in his mid 20's, with a great contract nonetheless.

I dont know much/havent seen Schenn play, but IMO the main reason these deals were made were for Schenn and the #8 (now Couterier). I think Simmonds and Voracek will be solid 2nd-3rd line wings for 10yrs plus, but I dont see either being as good as Carter (who isnt near as good as Richards). They have "potential" because theyre young, but neither strikes me as a player who will rise to all star level. Simmonds is very solid all around, but he'll never be a top line scorer. On the other hand, Voracek is a pretty good scorer, but on a playoff type team, I dont see him being higher than a 2nd liner, and his all around game is pretty weak.

I HATE the Flyers, but if Im looking at it from their perspective, I dont mind trading Carter or signing a longterm goalie for big money (IMO Bryzgalov is underrated), but the Richards trade surprises me. Giroux's next contract will basically be Richards'

...and I cant hate on the optimism Philly fans, you very well could get Brad Richards, but Stamkos is a pipe dream Chong never tried to spark  ;D
