i think the thing with trainspotting is that it doesn't glamourise or trivialise serious drug-use which a lot of films do. i've never seen another film which deals with these kinds of issues in such a no-holes barred kind of way, but still with a (very warped) sense of humour... you see the havoc it wreaks, the psychological and physical toll it takes... and that there is a choice. not everyone can make the choice, or they make the "wrong" choice, but its always there

obviously haven't seen requiem for a dream, but i've heard that's a pretty powerful film as well

requiem made me feel so sick i had to stop watching it. i never felt that from a movie. very powerful indeed!
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

Just recently watched City of Lost Children and really loved the cinematography--plus
great film, albiet very strange. Check out some of Jean-Pierre Jeunet other works if you have not, Delicatessen is great and Amelie is great.

Just watched The Sweet Hereafter again.  Hard to watch once you have kids.  Tragically beautiful movie; tough to shake.
I'm not saying it's easy...walking into sweet oblivion.

I always think I'm going to open this and see shows, like concerts.  We need a thread for that and what shows do you have coming up.  Would you guys be interested in a thread like that?

wow never mind, I see that thread now  :-?  shows how much attention I was paying to what I read.

QuoteA'ight...I saw Knocked Up when I was on Vacation. Both my wife and I found it brilliant. The movie was a riot and almost as funny was watching the 50somethings getting up and leaving about 1/2 way through the movie. I have a feeling Judd Apatow can do no wrong.

absolutely (and suprisingly) loved Knocked Up. Also took joy watching people walk out.

The whole scene in the Vegas hotel room with the chairs (not to spoil anything) was absolutely familiar to me, yet I have never been to Vegas or discussed chairs at such length...

Marvellous film, full of quotable lines.  Sherry?
The trouble with the straight and the narrow is it's so thin, I keep sliding off to the side

I dont know if this counts as a movie but I just finished season 3 of Deadwood.  WOW!  That's the best written television series I ever saw, not really from a plot perspective but the language is sooo rich.  I had to watch it with the subtitles on to catch the wordplay, it's really a fantastic experience.

And then once I was culturally enriched I had to go see Transformers, of course.

Monterey Pop - HOLY WOW.  What a wonderful musical film, I'd love to watch the 3-disc box set.

Highlights - Well it was all really really great, but I especially loved the performances by" Canned Heat, (a young) Simon and Garfunkel, Country Joe and the Fish (Tripps, I'm gonna need some guidance), The Who destroyed (pun!), the "Paint It, Black" cover by Eric Burdon and the Animals, Hendrix of course and Otis Redding.  Haha, I pretty much named every artist there.

You mean the Criterion version. I own it and it is a must have. It's a must in the explosive factor if you have a great sound-system. The DTS audio track is unbelievable.

I was watching the one at the bottom of the page, would love to see the other two:

Even my sup-par surround sound system sounded great, I was giving this wedding going on behind my place a run for their money.

Incidently, The Who were not pleased with their set-up at Monterey. Pete wasn't allowed to use his Jim Marshall hybrid amp and had to settle for a wimpy Fender (I think he was using a Fender head). Anyway, it's obviously true if you compare "A Quick One" from Monterey vs "A Quick One" from The Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus; the latter being  one of the best Who performances ever. Still, My Generation was killer at Monterey.

I see that the version you saw does indeed have a DTS track. It doesn't matter if you don't have 5.1 with a DTS decoder, but, it's still an excellent video transfer.

la vie en rose - about edith piaf.... fairly harrowing, but a very well done movie
love a song for the way it makes you feel

Last night I watched The Fountain. I'm usually pretty good at following weird movies, but i'm not sure if i understood everything. I'll have to watch it again.

i was watching monterey pop a VH1 the other day, and i loved it. i'll have to get the box set as well.  as far as country joe and the fish go, i would first get, "electric music for the mind and body"  followed by, "i-feel-like-i'm-fixin-to-die" followed by, "here we are again." i enjoy them all really. a lot of blues and psychedelics.

Saw Reservoir Dogs and The Boondock Saints last night with some friends. I love both. It's always fun to watch these movies.

I've watched a couple of movies and one BBC made-for-tv flick:

Bend Of The River (1952) - The second of James Stewart and director Anthony Mann's five westerns. Mann is one of the best forgotten directors. Part of the reason why Mann isn't a household name like his fellow American directors like John Ford, Howard Hawks and Sam Peckinpah, is because his films were uncompromising psychological examinations featuring anti-heroes. This film is fantastic, as are all the five westerns that Stewart and Mann did together beginning with Winchester '73.

The Prestige - A fine film with lots of plot twists and terrific acting all-round.

Miss Marple: Ordeal By Innocence (2007) - I recoded this a month ago off of the HD CBC and finally got around to watching it last night. I love murder mysteries and Agatha Christie film adaptations in general. This film is of the new incarnation of Marple (the series started up again in 2004) and stars Geraldine McEwan. Anyway, this is a good entry in the series.
