QuoteMontreal is a great town. Don't worry about what some of the Bostonians told you. Just don't walk around thinking eveyone wants to speak English to you. It's a town that is a politial language (French vs English) powder-keg. If anything, French Montrealers should have not liked me when I visited being from hated Toronto, but I had no problems. I'd live in Montreal in a second. One of the best cities in North America to live and work in.

I second this ascertation.  Montreal is one great town.

I too would live there in a second.  It was some of the most fun I've had outside of Arizona or Kentucky.  The people were warm and friendly, and I always felt welcome.  There was this one person who did not appreciate my lack of French speaking, but one out of the hundreds I came in contact with is hardly a reason to complain.  It is another country there, so I don't expect everyone to kiss my ass just because I'm an American, English speaking tourist.  I felt right at home, immediately.

Also, don't assume they want to speak to you in English. Don't forget that half of the over 2 million people in Montreal are English and almost everyone in the city including the over 1 million French are bilingual. The francophones understand you perfectly, but some don't like English as a culture. They feel English culture surrounds French Quebec and are worried that Quebec French culture will disappear - and there is merit and truth to that assumption. English Canada surrounds Quebec and the US, through it's over-bearing culture (and I don't mean this in a mean way) threatens to the south.

The town is the most political on the continent. It's also one of the most beautiful, diverse, historic, educated and enriching cities in the world.

I agree, if I had the choice to move anywhere in the world it would definately be Quebec/Montreal.  Regardless of the cold weather, its my favorite city.

OK, thanks guys. (perhaps a Montreal or Quebec thread is needed? Don't want to hog the movie thread)   :)

I rented "The Machinist" last night and watched it.  I heard this movie was grrrreat but I must disagree.  Christian Bale looks like a concentration camp prisoner and the movie is so s..l...o...w....    I fast-forwarded through most of it.  Anybody else seen this?

ali

i haven't seen it, but the pictures of christian i've seen he must have lost a scary amount of weight for the role... talk about walking skeleton  :P

I heard it was good, it's on my to see list. I like Christian Bale...

I saw Munich this week. I thought it was very good. I don't know how much of the story is true but I'm keen to find out more.
Still not sure what I think of Spielberg. It amazes me that the same man can make shit like the Terminal & movies like this.
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

i've been meaning to go see munich, but just haven't got there yet - is eric bana good? i had the misfortune to sit through the hulk (i still can't believe it was ang lee...) but i know he's a good actor (chopper scared the pants off me, he is freakily like the real chopper)

no matter how many great movies he does, i always think of the ultra-daggy characters he used to do on tv here....

Chopper's a great movie!
Eric Bana was very good. He dropped his accent from time to time but sounded more US than OZ. Other than that I thought he was very good.
I saw the Hulk, man that was shit! I don't think that was Eric Bana fault though.
I still can't believe that Daniel Craig is going to be James Bond. We was very good in Munich & I still have Layer Cake to watch but I really don't see him as Bond. Not that I've seen a Bond movie is years so I guess it doesn't matter...

yeah, i agree. daniel craig is a good actor, and i did like layer cake... but bond? i had my money on clive owen or maybe even russell... daniel craig has the freaky light blue eyes though, and he can come across as being a lot tougher/meaner/generally nastier than pierce brosnan, so i'm sure he'll do a good job. my fav bond is still mr connery though. yush, the name'sh bornd, jamesh bornd!!  ;)

I've always been a fan of Roger Moore:

Dashing, absolutely dashing!

I once heard that Burt Reynolds turned down JB?!!

roger was always just a little bit smarmy for me... actually, i think timothy dalton was a great bond too... forgot about him. i remember seeing one he did a long time ago (something on a boat, with sharks, all quite messy) that was pretty freaky

i guess roger brought out the corny humour more (the writing has always been corny, with all those entendres, but rog seemed to have a bit more fun with them that the others...)

I watched the restored version of Sam Peckinpah's Major Dundee. It's good, but there are a few gaps in the plot that are never fully explained. However, it is a must watch for any westen and/or Peckinpah fan. The cast is excellent, loaded with great lead and character actors: Charleton Heston, Richard Harris, James Coburn, Slim Pickens, Ben Johnson, Warren Oates, L.Q. Jones, R.G. Armstrong, Dub Taylor, Brock Peters and Jim Hutton (Tim's father ).

Lost in Translation.
I guess my Japanese has improved since I saw it last because I understood a lot more this time round, which made it even more fun to watch.
I love the opening scene with Death In Vegas playing as Bill Murray drives through Toyko in a taxi.

So what does he say at the end?
There's Still Time.........

That is one of my favorite movies.

Good question! Here's an interesting article:

He might have whispered something like "Was that your bum at the start of the movie or did they use a double?"
What do you think?  ;)
