No, no, no, I didnt mean the movie would freak me out. Im not homophobic or anything. What I meant is that would freak me out if I was James Franco. Think about it: You are presented with a script in which you play a gay character. No real love scenes, but your character is gay. So you sign on, the lead actor hears you have signed on, then touches up the script to include more love scenes. Thats what would freak me out lol.

Oh, of course...didn't mean to imply anything of the kind, guess I didn't word that very well!

I heard the same interview with Franco.  But the scenes between Penn and Franco that ultimately ended up in the film weren't particularly racy at all.

Hirsch is good in Milk as a squirrelly kid.  He plays squirrelly very well.
if it falls apart or makes us millionaires

Gosford Park - A little let down by it, it was a little hard to follow. I think a second viewing will help me pick up on some things.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

the last picture show - loved it.

ugh.  i just want to see slumdog millionaire and the wrestler and milk and synedoche, new york already.

at least that patti smith documentary and confessions of a porn addict are both at the independent theatre here in a week or two, that should tide me over for a little while.

I'll second that on The Wrestler and Synedoche, New York. Weren't these films released already? None of the theaters near me ever got them.  >:(
I'm really sick of how smaller budget/independent/artistic films are being treated as of late. I guess if the studio doesn't think people will go see it, then why bother advertising for it at all? The same goes for directors who have had success with previous films. When No Country For Old Men came out (in this case there was decent advertising) I had to go a bit out of my way to see it. Not until it started to get some Oscar buzz did the closer theaters finally get it.

Im with you on The Wrestler True, but I just found this out a couple days ago. It is being released in Pittsburgh, but not until January 23rd...Yes, over a month after its initial release in NYC/LA, crazy?!?!!? I know, but itll be in da Burgh

Cant wait to see that..Ive always thought Rourke was great but it looks like he outdid himself this time.

I like Benjamin Button a good bit, but Pitt didnt do enough in that for me to think Rourke didnt outdo him in The Wrestler form what Ive seen, and I think Pitt's acting is overlooked in most of his movies, as hard to believe as that may seem

QuoteI heard Milk was good, but Penn's performance out-does the movie. I read somewhere else that Gus Van Sant kind of puts the 'Van Sant' touch on it, and sometimes thats not a good thing.

To me, his movies have for the most part either been very good or very not good, with a few in between. I know most have raved about it, but im not sure if that moreso for Penn or the actual film, bc GVSant can definitely out-artsy himself.

I (think) that the only other movie of his I've seen was Good Will Hunting, which I liked. I think that the direction of Milk was pretty grounded, and very easy to follow. He used both new and old footage of SF, some really beautiful shots, edited believably when required for historical accuracy. The opening sequence of newspaper clippings and old film footage from police busts set the tone and explained some history very effectively. The old footage of Anita Bryant, Diane Feinstein and Ronald Regan was also used very well.

The direction is not groundbreaking, and I think that the film succeeds because of a (mostly) chronological telling of Harvey Milk's life. But there's a real and disarming intimacy that Van Sant establishes with his direction that highlights the AMAZING acting in the film...go see it.

Good Will Hunting is easily his most accessible and typical moviegoer movie.

From what Ive seen, Id call GWHunting, To Die For, and Drugstore Cowboy Van Sant at his finest, and all excellent movies IMO

Id call Gerry, Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, and Last Days Van Sant at his over the top arthouse worst.

I liked his Psycho remake a good bit, the acting/cast was fantastic I thought, and to remake a classic like that and make it feel new and add some small things impressed me. For what it was, I thought Elephant was okay as well, but certainly not great. Finding Forrester was about his only other mainstream movie besides GWH, and was good as well, but nothing special.

Based on what Ive read from people and what you just said, Van Sant seems to have laid off his art-pedal a bit, and in this case, Im sure thats a good thing.

You should see the film then and decide for yourself. I'm looking forward for your review.

Oh, I will once its on DVD or I find it on my computer for free, just saying what Ive heard. Penn certainly has a penchant for making movies better than they actually are. Hes 1 of the best.

Ill be sure to PM you when I post my review  ;)

I recommend Patti Smith: Dream of Life, but with reservations. I wrote a review of the film for SoundProof Magazine. Here it is (I hope it doesn't dissuade you from seeing it?):  http://www.soundproofmagazine.com/Canada/SoundBytes/Patti_Smith_Dream_of_Life.html

Oh yeah, I saw Drugstore Cowboy...been a long time, but I remember liking that one too! I read Even Cowgirls Get The Blues (also a long time ago), didn't even know there was a movie made. I've never even heard of the rest of those. I don't see many movies...

QuoteI am a new member, about to tarnish her reputation before even having had a chance to establish one by admitting to having just seen Twilight. Twice. In the space of two days.

But I'm not like that. Really.

I don't know librarian...twice? In TWO DAYS?!?!  It kind of sounds like you REALLY ARE LIKE THAT!!! ;D

Just kidding  :) Had you read the book? I hear they're pretty addicting...

We're glad you're here!

uhhh yeah I've seen Twlight, willingly, and read the books, willingly. Yes they are addictive or so I'm told my my female friends.  :-[

Well, they're not exactly what you'd call works if literary genius, but I'd like to meet a female who could resist the charms of Edward Cullen. I would have liked to think I'm not overly-susceptible to mass hysteria, but unfortunately I can no longer make that claim. I am but a sheep. For shame...

Nice to be here ^^ I've been looking for a forum to "settle down" in for a while, and considering MMJ are something which I would consider to be quite a prevalent feature in my life, where better?

Welcome to you new internet home. It's a nice place here.

Yeah, I have 2 really close friends that are obsessed with Edward. My wife is obsessed with Edward also. I do not think it's possible for the ladies to resist, and that is ok. Yeah, it certainly isn't high lit, but it doesn't need to be either.

Ha, I figure it must be a pretty awkward situation for spouses/significant others who get dragged along to the cinema by their female counterparts, then having to endure over 2hrs of swooning and fawning and salivating over some teenage pretty-boy. My friend intimated to me that she was considering making an "Edward mask" for her boyfriend. I promptly confiscated all card, crayons and twine in the vicinity.

No, I suppose she's writing for 9-13 year old girls (in theory, anyway) and is hardly professing to being a modern-day Dostoyevsky. I've heard all sorts of crazy rumours about the booming tourism industry over in Forks, WA. Apparently the local eateries are now serving "Bella Ravioli" and there are companies whose sole purpose is to organise and host Twilight-themed sleepovers. Do you reckon it's worthy of classification as an epidemic yet? :p

I feel at home already. ^^

Yeah I read that about Forks. I just picture a bunch of Emo/Goth kids CoughposersCough tripping through the rainy NW screaming "Stay out of the daylight" ala Azrael Abyss (http://www.hulu.com/watch/4816/saturday-night-live-goth-talk).

It was funny sitting at the theatre looking at the looks on all the guys faces. You could could almost read their thought (yeah i better get something for coming to THIS). I was the only guy there who wanted to see it.

Capt- Yep. You can plow through it quickly. Don't even get me started on reading Harry Potter. I read that 7 one the night it came out. And re-read it again a few days later in a day. Talk about obsessed.

Haha, I'm sure you're not far off the mark. White face powder/leather jacket/Paramore record sales reaching an all-time high.

I kept glancing over my shoulder at all the disgruntled looking males with their arms draped begrudingly around their squirmy dates' shoulders. None of them looked as though they'd be in the mood to "get any" in the near future (although you never can be sure with guys - it's all relative! :p)

And yes, Capt, very big books (full of very short, unimaginative, yet somehow adequate words) - perhaps she was trying to outdo ol' J.K. As if! I'm a fellow Potter-nut. That series is one of the most important features of my life to date! Did anyone get Tales of Beedle the Bard yet? Nice little reminder of the magic.

Yep. If you cannot play it, were abouts are you?
