Of course your points are all mostly speculative since you won't see it. I'm looking forward to seeing Benjamin Button, even though I didn't overly like Forrest Gump. And there's always films that play better for Oscar; see Slumdog Millionaire.

Slumdog doesn't play very well for Oscar at all.
1. City of God style cinematography/editing, which the Academy doesn't like because they're all really, really old and out of it.
2. Mostly unknown actors, at least in this country.
3. A UK, not a US production. Films that aren't made here don't win very often. (15 out of 81 times by my count.)
4. Large portions in a foreign language. A film that has large portions of it that are not in English hasn't won since The Last Emperor in '87.
5. It's not an epic.

I could go on. . .

Benjamin Button is worth seeing. The special effects are among the best I've seen. I don't see how it was made specifically to win oscars. Forrest Gump is the better movie, if you didn't like Gump then I can't see you liking this.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

4. If Brad Pitt truly aged backwards so that he'd be born a tiny old man and die as a huge baby, I'd see it in a second. Big missed opportunity.

A huge baby would've been too comical, they clearly wanted to go for a sad ending. Besides, they kinda did that already. Maybe you should watch this movie instead:

It would be comical. That's why I'd see it. It'd be a different movie, but I'd see it.

I agree with your points, but Slumdog feels different this time out. Danny Boyle has pedigree and of course, winning most major intenational awards coming into the Oscars helps put this film into the favourite to win category. I'd be shocked if it got shut-out. If anything, look for a split with Benjamin Button.

I dont think necessarily that if someone didnt like Gump they wouldnt like Button. Gump had a lot more to do with historical significances and how he as an individual affected others. I find Button to be a more personal story and focus more on the human condition and living one's life.

QuoteI have always wanted to see True Romance since it was written by Tarrantino, but I thought that it might be ruined by Tony Scott's direction. Good to know that's not the case. Sleepers and Kalifornia were totally off my radar, but I'll check those out too.

Highly recommend both Sleepers and Kalifornia

Watch Sleepers some night you want to watch a serious drama. Its got an outstanding cast too - Kevin Bacon, Robert DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman, Jason Patric, Brad Pitt, Minnie Driver, Billy Crudup, Brad Renfro.

Watch Kalifornia whenever youre in the mood for a fun thriller and are kicking back drinking some Reebs  [smiley=beer.gif]

True Romance is good fun. I loved it when I first saw it but it doesn't stand up so well after repeated viewings.

Long time since I saw them but I remember being disappointed by Sleepers & Kalifornia.
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Well for Kalifornia, I think Pitt's performance carries it - eventhough Duchovny and Lewis are good too. As pretty much a pure suspense/thriller movie, I think it succeeds in doing that with flying colors.

Sleepers I thought was just great all around. Unlike a lot of movies, the story really feels true and I think all of the actors further it and make it more powerful. It feels like youre watching the actual people and not actors. I loved the direction and scenery as well. If you look at how 5 minutes and 1 event shaped these 4 people's lives, and each of them differently, I found that made the story even more compelling and brilliant. Maybe check it out again??

I dont think Ive seen True Romance enough to comment on the rewatchability, but it seems to me like it would have that. Moves along fast enough, has a great cast, and you have 2 of the best scenes ever - the Walken/Hopper Sicily dialogue, and the Tony Soprano/Arquette fisticuffs.

Thought I'd chime in here. Sleepers is great, can't ask for a better cast, story, etc.... True Romance was good, borrowed it from a friend awhile back and haven't had a strong desire to want to watch it again. Not familiar with Kalifornia, but I'm a fan of Duchovny since The X-Files. Might have to check that out.

Just yesterday I was listening to Cat Powers cover of "Stuck inside the mobile with the memphis blues again", and it made me realize that I had to watch I'm not there again. Such a superb movie, great actors and the music is really awesome too (not really a surprise). Cate Blanchett does a really great job again, and even though one can't really see how beautiful she is in that movie, I just love her :). Makes me listen to Bob Dylan all day long again.

And Sleepers is great, haven't heard of Kalifornia either though, might check it out.
