Observe And Report

Well, I dont know what to think yet. I was expecting a typical Rogen comedy, but it was more of a dark comedy that went in some weird directions. Sometimes it was like it was trying to be serious, but I just couldnt believe it. Im not sure if that's funny or just bad.

Im disappointed, but it might get better with repeated viewings since it wasnt what I expected. I think it will definitely end up with the least amount of laughs still, however.

On another note, Knocked Up has really grown on me. I was disappointed with it as well after loving 40Yr Old Virg (which I still think is the best of all these Apatow-troupe comedies), but if Im bored and its on late at night - and HBO frequently has it on, I almost always turn it on. I still laugh my ass off during repeated viewings. Paul Rudd, Jay Baruchel, and Jason Segel really hold it together.

"Seven Samurai"--very, very entertaining inspiration for "The Magnificent Seven"

"Matewan"--YOUNG Chris Cooper as a coal miner union organizer (poor DVD transfer unfortunately since the cinematography was very nice West VA).
Sittin' here with me and mine.  All wrapped up in a bottle of wine.

QuoteI cannot do this film justice. It's not a summer blockbuster kind of film.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_Of_Lost_Children

It's very good and visual outstanding, which is kind of a trademark of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's films.

I loved that movie--a real visual stunner.

Looking forward to this. Overall I enjoy Jarmusch, but his movies border on being boring at times.

Excellent. Glad you enjoyed it.

"Stardust"--great, great fairy tale and Claire Danes is hot!

I also watched most of "There Will Be Blood" but I found it somewhat slow paced to hold my attention as much as I had hoped it would.

I just watched The Science of Sleep.  It was pretty good, visually crazy in some parts.

Not exactly a movie, but last night I watched the first two episodes of HBO's John Adams. Love it, thus far.

It's a great series.

Lots of movies...Let The Right One In blew me away, so did Persepolis and Man On Wire. King Of Kong was great too...
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

I still haven't seen Persepolis, but I loved the other three films.

I highly recommend Persepolis. Let The Right One In was something special, wasn't it? I loved the soundtrack too.

Trying to think what else I've seen recently...The Sea Inside was excellent, forget No Country For...this is Javier Bardem's best role IMO.
Valley Of Elah was OK. I like Tommy Lee Jones but the fact that Paul Haggis directed it should have kept me away -  the ending terrible!
Pineapple Express was the funniest film I've seen in a long time, James Franco was superb!
Role Models was funny too.

Watched Pan's Labyrinth again last night. I love this movie but Ofelia eating the grapes bothers me every time - I just don't buy it. It just seems like a poor excuse to unleash the Pale Man...surely Guillermo Del Toro could have come up with something a little more convincing/believable?

I preferred Role Models to Pineapple Express, but Ive only seen each once. They both were at the top of the 08 comedies with Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Step Brothers for me, hard to really pick 1 out of all 4 of those.

All 4 of which being much better than any comedy Ive seen this year so far, namely Observe&Report and I Love You, Man.

I dont remember that exact part of Pan's that you're talking about, but I definitely want to see that again -and still need to see The Orphanage. Ive been trying to get my 12yr old sister to see Pan's, but mi madre wont let her. I didnt think it was that bad.

QuoteTrying to think what else I've seen recently...The Sea Inside was excellent, forget No Country For...this is Javier Bardem's best role IMO.

Completely agree. Sea Inside is the best performance I've seen him give. I thought Tom Wilkinson should have beaten him at the Oscars last year for Michael Clayton. He was pretty great in No Country but I didn't find him very scary/menacing. He showed a little too much emotion I think. I don't know. The Coens are dead to me. Seventeen years of great films, eight years of disappointment. Watch any of the films they made between 1984-2001 and then watch No Country. It isn't half as unique, creative or interesting as even their worst film from that era, The Hudsucker Proxy. The Coens made three of my favorite movies: Fargo, The Big Lebowski and Miller's Crossing, plus Blood Simple, Barton Fink, O Brother Where Art Thou and The Man Who Wasn't There, all of which I really enjoy (not as much with Raising Arizona). I doubt they'll ever be that good again, but I'm still waiting for them to prove me wrong.

capt. scotty

Havent seen Hudsucker Proxy and didnt like Man Who Wasnt There, but I thought No Country was pretty well done - and the movie as a whole impressed me more than Bardem's performance. I thought Brolin was better than Bardem in it probably, but both were good.

The 90's will likely end up being their prime, and they probably wont make movies that good on that consistent of a basis, but I still think they have a few great ones in them.

I think No Country is great but I agree that this hasn't been a great decade for the Coens overall. The Hudsucker Proxy is really good, very underrated. I wouldn't call that their worst film from that era. Here's how I'd rate the Coen Brothers movies, best to worst.
The Big Lebowski
Blood Simple
Fargo
No Country For Old Men
Barton Fink
The Hudsucker Proxy
O Brother, Where Art Though?
Raising Arizona
Miller's Crossing
Burn After Reading
The Man Who Wasn't There
The Ladykillers
Intolerable Cruelty
