I just saw this movie yesterday.  It was good.  Wasn't as funny as I thought it was going to be.

I just saw Twilight.  I am addicted.  I had to go out and buy it and I bought the first to books.  Ha!

Role Models - Paul Rudd is really funny and that Stifler dude was well cast. Good film. It runs out of gas though, but that foul-mouth kid is freaking funny throughout.

I thought there was a 15 minute lull with around a half hour left (the part where the kids arent hanging out with them anymore) but I thought it ended strong.

Youth without Youth. very strange, but not as strange/puzzling as Syndoche, new york.  :o

Youth Without Youth seemed unbearable after thirty minutes. Not something I was expecting from Francis Ford Coppola. Maybe I was a little too cruel but I just couldn't sit through the whole movie.

American Gangster is a great film.  Saw it for the first time two nights ago.

QuoteAmerican Gangster is a great film.  Saw it for the first time two nights ago.

Loved that flick. I think the 2hr 45min time it clocks in it flys by and makes it feel not even 2 hours. I thought Denzel killed it as Frank Lucas, and great acting all around by Crowe, Ejiofer, Brolin, Gooding Jr., etc. Even RZA, Common, and T.I. werent bad.

I really liked how Ridley Scott went into detail with stuff other directors might have cut out - like Frank going to Nam and meeting his source, Crowe and being friends with a mob guy and their conversations, the scene with Joe Louis in the club.

How badass was the scene where shoots Stringer Bell in the dome in the middle of the street?!?! Thought the ending was perfect with him coming out of jail to a Public Enemy song also.

I recommend checking out the extended version on DVD. They add in some good stuff (as a matter of fact, that Louis scene might be one of them. Cant remember)

I even liked the main song that was written for it

Man, Headdy...you've really got me pumped to watch it again!  You're right though, I didn't realize it was so long.  It was a very balanced film. I thought everybody was good in it.  I'll delve a little more.  Thanks.

To me, its a lot like The Departed (which is my favorite film of this decade, and American Gangster probably ranks in the Top 10) in that it's got so much good going on for it, especially the acting, that repeated viewings only make it better because you can miss some stuff the first or second time. And neither are films where you'd expect that to be the case going in.

It was balanced. I know a couple people who didnt think much of it on first viewing, and I think it was because based on previews they expected a more violent film. If you think about it, a lot of the best gangster movies dont have as much violence as you would expect, but when they do, its pretty graphic - which really isnt the case with this movie as far as the graphic part. American Gangster has very little violence, and the majority of it is in the last 20 minutes.

Despite the lack of violence, I think Denzel makes you feel like he'll do whatever he wants at any moment, whether it means killing whoever he's talking to or walking out of a party, which is why I thought his part as Frank Lucas was that much more fantastic. Unlike most mob movies, I thought he made his character as a gangster have morals as well, which Im not sure Ive ever seen before (I cant see Frank Lucas making 1 of his brothers a Fredo, and IMO that is dap for Denzel because he makes his character appear that way to the viewer from the start).

Im guessing you watched it on HBO because its been on there lately, but yeah, check out the extended DVD. Usually I dont find much out of watching those versions, but I thought it was worth it in this case.

Yeah, HBO.  I don't like action flicks and I'm sorry to say I don't like "typical" mob flicks, however I do like Donnie Brasco and things like that.  I like gangster flicks like True Romance.  American Gangster seems to be a good balance of all.  I'll definitely watch it over and over again over time.

:) ;) :D ;D >:( :( :o 8-) :-? ::) :P :-[ :-X :-/ :-* :'(

Do you watch The Wire?

American Gangster reminded me of a 70's version of The Wire with how they showed both the cop's perspective and the dealer's perspective evenly, had a specific unit trying to figure out who the dealer is and get enough evidence against him to arrest him, and go in depth with the characters' lives outside of their "work".

Like a few other people around here will tell you, if you've never watched The Wire, DO IT NOW!!!

I just saw this movie yesterday.  It was good.  Wasn't as funny as I thought it was going to be.

I watched it last night on the ol 'puter. It was about what I expected, solid, but not spectacular.

Not near as good as they best of last year IMO (role models, step brothers, forgetting sarah marshall, pineapple express) but it was still pretty good. Ive def become a Jason Segel fan as Ill even watch How I Met Your Mother these days if im watching TV when its on.

I expect Observe and Report to be better and end up as 1 of the best on 09. Not sure what to expect with Adventureland.

I haven't seen The Wire much.  Frankly, I'm not much of a TV person, so I don't spend much time in front of the tube.  Sunday nights usually.

BTW-Kenny Powers brother, Dustin is one of the cops in American Gangster.  Just thought that was interesting.

RockNRolla - I enjoyed it. I like the fact that this is going to end up a trilogy.

FACE

my kid could paint that - (4 year old abstract artist? looks like her father's pretty guilty of doing those paintings... regardless, they're selling for 20,000 dollars)

devil's playground - what happens to amish teenagers when they're given the choice to join the amish church, or head into the real world. (crack? CRACK!?!?!!)

both were horrible films.  the first one, the dude gave up 'cos he didn't want to fuck up this poor four year old girl's life.  the second one seemed like an A&E special or a trulife shit from MTV... interesting subject matter, for both, but what the fuck. how disappointing.
