Cube

A fascinating and influential 1997 cult horror/psychological thriller from Canada. The budget was just $500,000, but you wouldn't know it. The story is fucked up: 7 random people kidnapped and locked in a kafkaesque maze of boxy rooms of differing colours; they have to find a way out but if they make the wrong decision, they die terrible but interesingly-orchestrated deaths. The purpose of this test is left to your interpretation, but it appears to be some sort of lab experiment. With a superior script, the claustrophopic set is a scary co-star while the acting, although a bit over-the-top, is fairly solid given the tight budget and that it was the first-ever film by director Vincenzo Natali (he directed last year's respected horror film, Splice); particulary good is David Hewlett(Rodney McKay from Stargate Atlantis) and to a lesser extent, Nicole de Boer (Star Trek DS9's Ezri Dax). Cult and horror fans should check this out. It is a mindfuck.

Loves me some Cube! Crazy, mindbending fun. I had no idea the dude that directed Cube also did Splice. Interesting.
I've always loved Cube. The first sequal was awful. The third film was much better. Has anyone seen "EXEM"??? WOW!  What a mindbender! Which one of "those" really fantastic, WOW endings. I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys a killer thriller! Brilliance!
Why does my mind blow to bits everytime they play that song?

Lick My Love Pump!

I'd love to re-live the first time I watched Spinal Tap.  I have the vinyl released with the movie, but haven't had a turntable in ages.  Great movie.  Interesting cameos throughout.  Billy Crystal, Dana Carvey, Paul Schaeffer...
The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

Finally got round to watching this last night:

Bridesmaids and I dont think I've ever laughed so hard

Looks pretty funny! Doubt I see it in theaters but Ill have to watch it illegally or check it out 6months from now.

That Will Ferrell movie a few posts back also looks good. These days, dramatic Ferrell (this, Stranger Than Fiction) seems to have outclasses comedic Ferrell  :-\
The thing is, Bob, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care. - Peter Gibbons

Saw Thor last night - kind of silly but a lot of fun & very entertaining. Not as good as Iron Man but better than IM2. Bring on CA & The Avengers!!!

Also watched recently:

Tamara Drewe - utter rubbish
Attack The Block - utter shite

The Illusinist - not the 2006 Ed Norton movie but a beautifully animated film by the director of Les triplettes de Belleville, made me fall in love with Edinburgh: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0775489/
The Secret Of Kells - another stunning (to look at) 2D animated movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0485601/

Both stories are rather slow but they're definitely watching if you're a fan of animated films.

Trailer: The Illusionist

Trailer: The Secret of Kells
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil - Official Trailer

One of the best rock documentaties. I saw it when at its World Premiere a few years ago at Toronto's Hot Docs festival. All the Anvil members, past and present, were in attendence and stuck around after the screening for a Q&A and then album, merch signings. It was weird watching some of the footage since some of the best old 1980s interview segments came from where I work now, MuchMusic; news anchor John Roberts, formally of CBS, CNN and now FOX, was the interviewer VJ. Back then he was known as JD Roberts. Anyway, my work library has tons of Anvil footage and some was used for this doc. I wish Anvil made it big back in their heyday, but their brand of music ain't for everyone. Anvil still gig in downtown Toronto, and yes, always in small clubs.

Let Me In 4.25 / 5

Pretty damn good! I feared for all vampire related material since the inception of the Twilight series, but this movie nailed it. It's a remake of a Swedish film a few years ago. I decided to give it a go after reading it was one of Stephen King's favorite films of 2010. Good character development & interesting storyline. Very good special effects & it is quite bloody at times. I never would have thought I would appreciate a vampire flick for it's dramatic elements, but i sure as hell did with this one. i highly recommend it

You should have watched the original film, Let The Right One In, first. It's superior (more bleak and brooding, with winter in late '70s Sweden acting as a co-star), but both are excellent.

Another recent vampire film worth seeing out is Thirst. It was directed by Chan-wook Park, the mega-talented creator of the Korean Vengeance trilogy: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.

Another serious vampire film worth searching for is Cronos, written and directed by the great Guillermo del Toro (The Devil's Backbone, Hellboy, Mimic, Pan's Labyrinth). Cronos co-stars Ron Fucking Perlman!!

So far I've viewed Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy & Thirst. I greatly enjoyed all 3. If I had to pick a favorite I'd go with Oldboy. That flick was just pure craziness! Just Lady Vengeance left for the trilogy but streaming it via Netflix cuts off the subtitles.  >:( I'll need to get the physical copy. Thanks so much for the suggestions! I really dug the ones I've watched

Here's a rundown of movies I've seen in the past 2 months

American Grindhouse - 4/5 - great doc on grindhouse movies, free on hulu....extra NSFW
The Fighter - 5/5 - I thought it was incredible; additionally bc I have many ties to the Lowell area.
Despicible Me - 4/5 - obv more geared to young'ens but really great lil flick.
Get Low - 3/5 - Bill Murray and Robert Duvall in general understated greatness, unforturnately the story was a bit boring to me.
Black Swan - 4.5/5 - Thought it was great. Really fun/disturbing, movie
Serenity - 5/5 - Finally finished Firefly (awesome series)...movie blew away my expectations, probably behind Star Wars and maybe even edging out Bladerunner for 2nd favorite Sci-Fi movie.
Oh, I will dine on honey dew And drink the Milk of Paradiseeeee

After reading all these great posts about rockumentaries, I was wondering if anyone on here had seen (please don't throw tomatoes at me!) the Hanson documentary "Strong enough to Break"? If you want to check out something that would probably surprise you and actually hold your attention, this film is amazing. It chronicles the 5 years that Hanson "dissapeared" from the music scene and what actually happened to them and what their record label did. It's pretty heartbreaking and incredible to see how hard these brothers fought the corporate machine just to make music and how they were essentially buried because they refused to work with "hit" songwriters or wouldn't dance like a boy band. It's all filmed by them over the 4 year period they were recording the 85(!?) songs for the album "Underneath". If you want to see a true testament to the music business and how it destroys true talent, but how that talent wins in the end, this is a GREAT experience. Don't be turned off because it's "Hanson". Mmmmbop was over 15 years ago. These guys have all grown up and are damn good musicians and songwriters now. Check it out. It's worth the time.
Why does my mind blow to bits everytime they play that song?

127 hours - 4/5 - very good movie.....I thought Franco was awesome in this, nearly as good as Bale in the fighter but the character was definitely not as dynamic....for those interested, the book the movie was based on "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" by Aron Ralston is a captivating read and certainly goes into great detail into Aron's life and other crazy adventures he had, this was not his first brush with danger....well worth a read.

what's next? I really wanna see Thor and Bridesmaids.

Maybe I'll just watch Serenity again...any other browncoats out there? Jaimoe did you mention you were a fan?

thus far only Firefly/Serenity and Dr. Horrible but have been thinking to delve a lil deeper into his works....I enjoyed Buffy but it was a little past my time as I was in high school when it was on and decided it was not cool for me to be watching that show.....his movie output has been solid as well.

Buffy was a masterpiece of Television and a victim of people judging the show due to it's name and bad movie predecessor. In 7 years I never missed an episode and cried like a little girl the night it went off the air with a fantastic final 4 episode arc. Season 1 is a bit shaky but lays important ground info down. Season 2 is when it really just took off and the writing and acting just went supernova. By the time season 6 hits, you're still not prepared for the things they hit you with. Ever evolving and never predictable. Buffy was and still is a gem. The Whedonverse was never the same after Joss jumped ship and went to Angel tho. Just spread himself too thin. But Buffy holds up. I'm really looking forward to Johnny Depp as vampire Barnabus Collins in the new Dark Shadows flick. With Tim Burton directing it??? Oh yesssssssssssssssssss..
